Prepare Your Shelves!

The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart (Ballantine Books, February 22)

The Paradox Hotel is going to be a book that’s going to ring a lot of bells for a lot of people. Time travel. Locked room mystery. Ghosts. Truly this book has a little something for everyone, If you’re not normally a sci-fi reader, this novel is compelling enough on a mystery/thriller level. If you don’t normally pick up whodunits, the sci-fi/fantasy elements in this will grab you and keep you reading. Anyway, you get the idea!

The Paradox Hotel is not your average, run-of-the-mill hotel. This is the place where super wealthy people come to stay on their way towards the most exciting new kind of tourism: time travel. The Paradox Hotel is close to the time port where people can pay to take “flights” to different times in the past. Of course, being so close to a time port means sometimes strange things happen in the hotel. Clocks run backwards. Ghosts roam the halls.

But as a blizzard rolls in towards the hotel, everything is about to get stranger. The time port is having an odd reaction to the weather changes, and flights have been delayed until further notice. Now everyone is stuck at the hotel. And now… there is a murderer on the loose.

Or is there? For some reason, only January Cole, who runs security at the hotel, can see the dead body. And as guests at the hotel become targets, the killer seems to be invisible. It may all seem impossible, but anything is possible at the Paradox Hotel, where time is turned inside out and the past is waiting around every corner.

True story. I bought Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi three times because I was so excited about reading it, and also I forgot that I’d already bought it. Three times. So this meme is for me and anyone else who can relate.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

You might be wondering why I’m reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf again. Or, I don’t know, maybe you don’t notice these things and that would be totally normal too. But I thought I should explain. Way back when that book first came out, I made my husband Ben buy it because I was 100% certain he would love it even though I hadn’t read it yet, just because I like Marlon James’ other work and I know how Ben feels about fantasy. He read it and loved it (hey, I’m good at recommending books). But that was a while ago!

Now with Moon Witch, Spider King coming out in a few months, it’s time for Ben to get a little refresher on the first book in the series. And I like it when people read to me. So we’re going to read the book together. He’s going to read it aloud and I’m going to relax and listen.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, my parents used to read to me every night before bed, and it was really nice! I don’t know why we as adults don’t do this for each other. I guess we have audiobooks, but there’s something really fun and communal about reading to each other every now and then. Sure, it’s probably going to take us a long time to get through the book this way, but we’ll get to savor it and spend some time together. Is this weird? I think it’s going to be fun. Anyway, maybe give it a try if it sounds appealing to you!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

So you know how I said I’ve been doing yoga at home this month? Well, I haven’t been doing it alone. I usually have at least one cat friend join me. For this day of yoga, we’ve got Murray. What would we call this yoga pose he’s doing? Stripey orange kitty pose? Let me know if you have any ideas.

And that’s all I’ve got for you today! I hope your day is wonderful. Stay hydrated. Wear SPF. Remember to get up and move around a little bit, if you can!
