Hey YA Fans!
Summer is back in full swing in the midwest this week, as well as in New Orleans, where I’m at for a few days. A nice reminder that actual summer goes until the end of September, eh?
It might be summer outside, but it’s fall in publishing. That means we’ll be seeing huge book releases each week, as well as exciting news. Let’s dig into the latest in YA news.
- This piece by Sonia Patel about how not all teens celebrate their diverse cultures is a must-read and really thought-provoking.
- Brazil is censoring queer books. This thread is a primer for the ongoing situation.
- Speaking of decisions with huge consequences, author Julia Watts was disinvited from a teen book festival because she also writes erotica. Do….we not think teens are smart enough to know that people can write in more than one category or genre?
- I really loved Unpregnant which came out this week and cannot wait to see it hit the big screen.
- This isn’t new news but it was new news to me: The Distance From Me To You will be adapted and done so with the help of Topanga from Boy Meets World.
- Lauren Myracle’s next book looks really interesting.
- So Nic Stone’s Shuri based on the character from Black Panther isn’t YA, but because she’s a rad YA author, I’m including this big piece of news here. Nic Stone + Black Panther = awesome.
- This new series on School Library Journal about reading and writing in the Trump era starts off with a bang. Read this fabulous Laurie Halse Anderson piece and keep an eye as this column continues.
- Did you read Sweet Valley High? Not to make you feel old, but the series is 35 this year, and the original creator dishes all.
- Rainbow Rowell recommends some YA graphic novels. I haven’t read Pumpkinheads yet, but think I’ll be trying to get my hands on it soon.
- Did you know you can listen to YA audiobooks on Spotify?
- Take a peek at this (very) early preview of spring 2020 books for young readers. It includes children’s and middle grade titles as well as a host of YA books.
- The New York Times highlights Korean teens in YA, including books by David Yoon and Maurene Goo.
This Song-Covey sisters t-shirt is adorable. Grab it for $29 and up.
Thanks for hanging out, and we’ll see you on Monday!
