Dear Book Friends,
How are you doing? By the time you read this, I’ll be preparing for a little weekend trip to Vancouver on the train. And you know what trains mean? Lots of time for reading. I can’t wait to catch up with you and tell you about all the books I finish on the train ride(s). In the meantime, let’s talk books!

Can’t Wait for This One!
The Thick and the Lean by Chana Porter (Gallery/Saga Press, April 18 2023)
Lambda Award finalist Chana Porter is back with a new novel, and it’s coming out in early 2023! Inspired by the author’s own issues with body image and eating disorders, The Thick and the Lean explores the true value of food for pleasure rather than just for sustainance.
Seagate is a quaint religious town where abstaining from food makes you closer to God. The town carefully regulates every calorie its citizens consume. But Beatrice has a secret passion for cooking. And she’s hungry. She craves the forbidden flavors of butter and sugar. But if she gives into her desires, she’ll be forced out of the only community she’s ever known.
Meanwhile, Reiko Rimando is facing a mountain of college debt and finds herself turning to cyber criminal activities to avoid a humiliating return back home from the city. Together, and with the guidance of a mysterious cookbook written by a kitchen maid centuries ago, Reiko and Beatrice will fight for a life free from restriction and corporate greed.

Words of Literary Wisdom
“We all experience attraction differently, Some of us fall in and out of love easily. Some of us don’t experience romantic love at all. Some of us have to fight to let ourselves be vulnerable enough to fall in love. Some of us have to fight to let other people love us. Some of us need emotional intimacy in order to experience sexual attraction. All love and ways of loving are love.”
— Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun
What’s Up in the Book Community?
My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.
Ever wondered what your favorite celebrities love to read? Well, I have the Instagram account for you! Celebrity Book Recs posts neat graphics that include different celebrities’ fave books, what the celeb has said about the book, and where the book is mentioned as one of their favorites. It’s been really fun reading through their posts so far. Which celebrity do you think has the best taste in books, according to these graphics? I’m really loving Brie Larson’s picks (part 1 and part 2) and Elliot Page’s picks.
And Here’s A Cat Picture!
Oh hey look! We did get some snow last weekend. Do you see that tiny little patch of white on the grass? Yeah, that’s snow. Look, the cats are very impressed too. They can’t look away. Yes, I am from the south and snow still gets me excited. At least the cats agree with me. And that’s all I have for you today, friends! See you Monday, same time same place.
