Isn’t Nature Grand?

Ah, April, where did you go? I won’t miss it, to be honest: my allergies are killing me. Nature may be grand, but it also hates me personally. Fortunately, these comics are hypoallergenic!

Riot Recommendations

Today’s Riot Rec theme is: the environment! Let’s cap off Earth Month (and, in the U.S., anticipate Arbor Day) with these comics about how precious and fragile our world is.

Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton

Before creating her classic, meme-worthy comic Hark! A Vagrant, Kate Beaton worked in Alberta, Canada — specifically, in Alberta’s oil sands, where a select few make a fortune at the expense of the environment and the people. The work exposed Beaton to the beauty of the world — and to the hypocrisy of those who only pay lip service to wanting to protect it.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Box Set cover

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Box Set by Hayao Miyazaki

This epic-length manga comes in an epic-sized box set that includes the entire story of Princess Nausicaä, who must save her village, which has already suffered environmental degradation, from a new threat. If you’ve only seen the film adaptation, now is your chance to read where it all began!

Climate change can seem really big and scary, and it is, but there are things you can do to help. For instance, consider giving a few bucks to organizations that are helping to combat the effects of climate change, like Carbon180 or even the World Monuments Fund.

I know that won’t solve everything, but sometimes just taking action can make you feel less helpless and alone!
