Hi Book Friends!
I’m back home after a short journey to New York, and, oh, it’s suddenly March? Who let that happen? I hope everyone is doing okay, given how truly difficult and unsettling the world continues to be. I know there’s nothing I can say to make things better, but I also just want to acknowledge that things are scary. And sometimes at moments like this, it can feel like the small stuff like books don’t really matter. But books are one of the joys that make life worth living, so as long as there are still words to read, I’m going to keep writing about them. And I thank you for being here to read with me. I’m sending you hugs and best wishes and hopes for happier days.

Can’t Wait for This One
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Ray, July 19th)
At this point, Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an insta-read author for me. If she has a new book coming out, it’s going straight to the top of my TBR pile. And not simply because her books are a good. The best thing about Silvia Moreno-Garcia is that you’re never sure where her stories will take you. With Mexican Gothic, readers got a chilling gothic tale. Gods of Jade and Shadow, inventive historical fantasy based in Mayan mythology. Velvet Was the Night, a political noir thriller. With The Daughter of Doctor Moreau, Silvia Moreno-Garcia is serving a “dreamy reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Mexico.”
Carlota Moreau is the only daughter of evil genius Doctor Moreau. She has spent her life growing up in a distant estate, safe from the hardships of the Yucatán peninsula. With the assistance of Montgomery Laughton, the doctor spends his days creating hybrids, creatures that are part animal and part human. These science experiments, financed by the wealthy and powerful Lizaldes, are going perfectly according to Doctor Moreau’s plans. But then the abrupt arrival of Eduardo Lizalde, the son of Doctor Moreau’s patron, threatens to unravel everything.
With this atmospheric new novel, Moreno-Garcia is once again entering new storytelling territory, mixing horror, science fiction, and fantasy. If somehow you’ve made it this far in your reading life without reading one of this author’s novels, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is the perfect excuse to to finally pick up one of her books.

“I didn’t become a cult leader to be kind.”

What’s Up in the Book Community?
My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.
In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many people have taken to social media to share relevant reading lists of books that can help us understand the conflict. If you’re looking for more books to help you understand what’s going on, check out this list from Book Riot.
And Here’s A Cat Picture!
I know I just shared a picture of Murray on Monday, and generally speaking I like to spread the love. But today, Murray was sleeping on my office chair like this, and I couldn’t stand it. I had to take a pic and share it. I hope you’ll understand.
And that’s all for now! I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Take care of yourself. Be kind to others. Pet your cats and dogs. And we’ll talk soon!
