Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Malibu Rising Being Developed As A Hulu TV Series

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s recently released novel Malibu Rising is being developed as a Hulu TV series. The novel focuses on the story of the four Riva siblings (the children of an acclaimed rock star) who throw a big party at the end of the summer of 1983. But over the course of the next 24 hours, as the party gets out of hand, each Riva sibling will have to make big decisions about who they are and what they will leave behind in this summer forever. Liz Tigelaar and Amy Talkington (Little Fires Everywhere) will executive produce with Brad Mendelsohn, Stacey Silverman, Jennifer Gwartz, and Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author. Amy Talkington will also write the adaptation.

Young adult author Sabaa Tahir, known for her internationally bestselling An Ember in the Ashes series, has announced that she will be publishing a new standalone novel in 2022. Fifteen years in the making, Tahir’s new novel All My Rage will draw from the author’s own experiences growing up in her family’s 18-room motel in California’s Mojave Desert. All My Rage will also be adapted for television by PICTURESTART. Sabaa Tahir will write the script with Amer Saleem.

Sarah Penner’s The Lost Apothecary to be Adapted As a Drama Series at Fox

Sarah Penner’s bestselling novel The Lost Apothecary is in the works to be adapted as a drama series at Fox. Penner’s novel, which was published in March 2021, centers around an 18th-century secret apothecary shop in London that caters to a specific kind of clientele: women who want to murder their husbands. Penner will work as a consultant on the upcoming adaptation. Fox is now looking to bring in a writer and an executive producer.

New Nonfiction Book By Margaret Atwood Coming in 2022

Bestselling and award-winning Canadian author Margaret Atwood is coming out with a new nonfiction book next year. Doubleday will publish Atwood’s Burning Questions: Essays 2004-2021, a collection of over 50 essays written by the author. Atwood’s essays will cover a wide range of topics, such as the economic crisis, climate change, when to dispense advice to the young, and much more. According to the publisher, questions addressed in the book include “How much of yourself can you give away without evaporating?” and “What do zombies have to do with authoritarianism?” Burning Questions is set to be published on March 1, 2022.

Salt & Straw Introduces 2021 Rad Readers Ice Cream Series

Ice cream company Salt & Straw has announced a new 2021 Rad Readers Series. The new menu features ice cream flavors inspired by their five favorite children’s authors. Flavors include Goosebumps: Monster Blood (mango ice cream, fruit punch “monster goo,” and strawberry bark “fangs”); Amulet: Fruit of the Gadoba Tree (Salt & Straw’s take on Gadoba fruit and bittersweet cacao nibs); Geronimo Stilton & The Frosted Frozen Feast (parmesan cream, mascarpone cheesecake, buttery cracker crust, and salted caramel); Smile: Words & Pictures (vanilla, stracciatella, and yellow and pink almond-infused sponge cake); and Twins: A Matching Pear (pear ice cream with a cinnamon swirl).

The Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency has launched a new scholarship in honor of the late thriller author John Le Carré. The annual scholarship will cover the cost of the Curtis Brown three-month online course Writing Your Novel, which runs from September 6th to December 13th. This scholarship is part of The Breakthrough Writers’ Programme, a new outreach program that aims to offer opportunities for under-represented writers.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, star of Never Have I Ever, has been cast as Lizzie Bennet in the upcoming Netflix contemporary Pride and Prejudice adaptation. The U.S. Selfies, now in their second year, have announced the 2021 finalists. Publishers Weekly and BookLife launched the Selfies Awards in 2020 to honor the best in self-published works. In adult fiction, the finalists are Paty Jager’s Fox Goes Hunting; N.D. Jones’s A Queen’s Pride; Lilianne Milgrom’s L’Origine: The Secret Life of the World’s Most Erotic Masterpiece; Charlie Newton’s Privateers; Adam Pelzman’s The Boy and the Lake; Penny Reid’s Engagement and Espionage, Solving for Pie; and Nicolas Lietzau’s Dreams of the Dying. Artists and Authors Contribute to Literary Tarot Project

Brink Literacy Project’s new Kickstarter, The Literary Tarot, is creating a full 78-card deck covering all the major and minor arcana, but with a literary twist. To help reimagine the cards, they’re working with some of the literary world’s most beloved authors and artists. Contributors and their tarot/literature pairings include: Celeste Ng pairs “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and The Hanged Man; Carmen Maria Machado pairs Carmilla and the Ace of Light; Leigh Bardugo pairs The Secret Garden and the Ace of Parchment; Margaret Atwood pairs Jane Eyre and the Queen of Light; Victor LaValle pairs Lovecraft’s “The Outsider” and the Tower. Portage NAACP Creates Social Justice Coloring Book

The NAACP in Portage County, Ohio has created a coloring book to teach local children the ABCs of social justice. “The Social Justice Coloring Book” will be distributed in schools, community centers, and housing developments throughout Portage County. Each of the illustrated coloring book pages covers the alphabet of social justice, from “A is for Anti-Racism” to “Z is for Zero tolerance for hate.”

100 Years After the Tulsa Race Massacre, Mary Parrish’s Firsthand Account is Published

100 years ago, on May 31 and June 1, 1921, The Tulsa Race Massacres devastated a community, and the effects are felt to this day. Now, as the entire country marks the 100th anniversary of this terrible event in US history, journalist Mary Parrish’s firsthand account is being published to a wide audience for the first time. The book, The Nation Must Awake: My Witness to the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, was first published in 1922 and included photos and firsthand accounts that Parrish collected. At the time, only a few dozen copies were published. Decades later, one of those copies was handed down to Parrish’s great-granddaughter Anneliese Bruner, who has joined with Trinity Press to publish the book. This new edition of Parrish’s book includes a foreword by renown African American historian John Hope Franklin and an afterword by Bruner with New York Times bestselling author Scott Ellsworth.

Authors to Earn Royalties on Secondhand Books for the First Time

AuthorSHARE, a new royalty fund program, is calling for more retailers to participate. While authors normally do not receive any royalties from secondhand book sales, William Pryor, founder of Somerset-based used bookseller Bookbarn International, came up with AuthorSHARE in partnership with World of Books Group. The program pays authors each time one of their used books is bought directly from the World of Books and Bookbarn International websites. Pryor hopes that soon others in the industry will sign up for AuthorSHARE so that it can expand.

If You’ll Have Me, A Sapphic Rom-Com Graphic Novel, Sells for 6 Figures

After bids from five different publishers, If You’ll Have Me, a YA Sapphic rom-com graphic novel by Eunnie, has just sold at auction for six figures. The graphic novel, which was purchased by Dana Leydig at Viking Press, follows introverted college student Momo Gardner who falls for PG, a girl with a reputation for breaking hearts. The book will be published in the spring of 2023.

One Poem Channels India’s Anger About the Pandemic

Parul Khakhar’s 14-line Gujarati verse has highlighted India’s shocking response to COVID. The poem Shab-vahini Ganga (“A Hearse Called Ganga”) was posted on May 11 on social media, and it expresses the poet’s despair and outrage at her country’s response to the pandemic and the high number of pandemic deaths. While Khakhar does not mention Narendra Modi by name, it’s clear from the poem’s heartfelt words that it reflects India’s anger over Narendra Modi and his administration’s handling of the pandemic.

Netflix’s Contemporary Anna Karenina Series Adaptation Will Be First Russian Original

Netflix is currently working on its first Russian original drama series, a contemporary retelling of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina, with the working title Anna K. The series will take place in contemporary Russia. Anna Karenina (Svetlana Khodchenkova) is the wife of the soon-to-be governor of St. Petersburg. She has a love affair with Vronsky, the heir of an aluminium empire. Michael Azzolino, the director of the series, said: “We are incredibly proud to announce our first Russian series with 1-2-3 Production. The talented team of writers, directors and producers have crafted an imaginative and immersive series. We are excited to help bring their vision for this much admired story to our members in Russia and the world.”

Telemundo Global Studios Buys Complete Library of Spanish-Language Writer Corín Tellado

In the biggest Spanish-language literary adaptation deal of the year, Telemundo Global Studios has purchased the exclusive rights to the complete library of all time best-selling Spanish-language writer Corín Tellado. The deal covers nearly 4,000 titles and also marks the first time a Spanish-language studio has acquired the rights to a major author’s complete works.

Netflix Has Announced More of the Cast for the Upcoming Sandman Adaptation

For its upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, Neflix had already announced that Tom Sturridge and Gwendoline Christie would star as Dream and Lucifer. In a press release earlier this week, many more roles for the upcoming adaptation were announced: Kirby Howell-Baptiste will play the role of Death, Mason Alexander Park will play Desire, Donna Preston will play Desire’s twin, Despair, Jenna Coleman will play Johanna Constantine, Joely Richardson and Niamh Walsh will play the older and younger versions of Ethel Cripps, Kyo Ra will play Rose Walker, Stephen Fry will play Gilbert, Razane Jammal will play Lyta Hall, Sandra James Young has been cast as Unity Kincaid, Patton Oswalt will lend his voice to Dream’s raven emissary, Matthew the Raven, and David Thewlis has been cast as John Dee. Author Neil Gaiman said in a statement released alongside the casting that he couldn’t wait for people to see the series, and, “Of course, there are more delights and nightmares cast than I’ve listed here, and we have a few more secrets up our sleeves.”

Romancing the Discourse is a New Monthly Online Lecture Series for Fans of Romance

Earlier this week, romance author, editor and academic Ali Williams announced Romancing the Discourse, “A monthly online romance lecture and Q&A series for the romance reader, writer and academic, and the perfect entry point in the genre for the romance-curious.” The series will be 13 sessions that cover a wide range of subjects, from various romance genres to how the promise of a Happily Ever After allows writers to take risks. Each session will have a 40 minute lecture and conclude with a 20 minute Q&A. Sessions cost £5 each and will take place on Saturdays at 9pm GMT (Saturday afternoon for US attendees and Sunday morning for Australian).

Oscar Isaac Confirmed as the Star of Marvel’s Moon Knight

Seven months after Oscar Isaac was first announced as “in talks” to star in Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight, the studio has finally confirmed that Isaac will star in the upcoming series, which will air on Disney Plus. No other members of the cast have been officially announced as of yet, but it’s been rumored that Ethan Hawke is also connected to the project as a villain. May Calamawy is also reportedly attached to the project in an unknown role. The Disney Plus series is based on the Marvel superhero Moon Knight, originally created by Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin. The series is set to release in 2022.

Lois Ehlert, Illustrator of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Dies At 86

Lois Ehlert, illustrator of the children’s book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Milwaukee. The author’s illustrations were created primarily by cutting out shapes and pasting them into collages. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom has sold over 12 million copies, according to Simon & Schuster.

Emily Brontë’s Handwritten Poems Going Up for Auction As Part of “Lost Library” Collection

A collection of rare books and manuscripts originally assembled by Charlotte Brontë’s widower Arthur Bell Nicholls is going up for auction. The collection has been out of the public eye for nearly a century, and it includes Emily Brontë’s handwritten poems, which include pencil corrections by her sister Charlotte. This manuscript is thought to be the highlight of the “lost library” collection. Sotheby’s described Brontë’s manuscript of 29 poems as “incredibly rare,” and values it at between £800,000 and £1.2m. The auction house said the handwritten poems are “the most important manuscript by Emily to come to market in a lifetime, and by far the most significant such manuscript to remain in private hands.”

Are Black Bookstore Owners Retaining Customers a Year After Anti-Racist Reading Boom?

Around this time last year, following the murder of George Floyd, anti-racist books made up nearly 70% of the New York Times Best Seller list, and readers flocked to Black-owned bookstores to show their support. Now, a year later, Black bookstore owners told NPR that sales are down from the 100-300 orders that were coming in this time last year, but owners are still optimistic and print book sales are still surging. NPR spoke to Black bookstore owners across the country, including La’Nae Robinson, co-owner of Bliss Books & Wine in Kansas City, MO, and Derrick Young, one of the co-owners of Mahogany Books in Southeast Washington, D.C.

Roxane Gay—professor, editor, social commentator, and bestselling author of Bad Feminist and Hungeris starting a new imprint with Grove Atlantic called Roxane Gay Books. Gay’s imprint will publish three books a year, both fiction and nonfiction, and will sponsor a publishing fellowship program “for candidates who might not have access to the industry through traditional avenues.” Gay said in a statement earlier today, “It has been a lifelong dream to have a literary imprint of my own where I could publish great books and have the support of a storied publishing house behind me.”

Netflix Releases Trailer, Images, and Voice Cast for New Anime Series Trese

Netflix has released a trailer, images, and the voice cast for their upcoming new anime series. The show is based upon Budjette Tan and KaJO Baldisimo’s graphic novel Trese. Set in a version of Manila where creatures of Philippine folklore walk amongst humans, Trese follows Alexandra Trese who finds herself up against a criminal underworld filled with evil supernatural beings. The series comes to Netflix on June 11 and stars Shay Mitchell as Alexandra Trese. Other cast members include Darren Criss, Jon Jon Briones, Nicole Scherzinger, Manny Jacinto, Lou Diamond Phillips, Eric Bauza, Dante Basco, Steve Blum, carlos Alazraqui, Matthew Yang King, Griffin Puatu, and Rodney To.
