Scholastic Apologizes for Suggesting Maggie Tokuda-Hall Cut Racism from Her Book: Today in Books

ComiXology Veterans David Steinberger and Chip Mosher Launch Comic Book Publishing Company

ComiXology co-founder and former CEO David Steinberger and former ComiXology head of content Chip Mosher are starting a new comic book publishing company, DSTLRY. “Comic creators have historically received the short end of the stick when they create great characters and storylines for traditional publishers,” Steinberger and Mosher said in a joint statement. “DSTLRY is truly a creator-owned endeavor, with creators co-owning the company their creations fuel. It just makes sense that as creators help build the brand, they receive equity.” DSTLRY is aiming to provide comic creators with fairer deals and a stake in the company. DSTLRY has set aside an additional 3% of company equity to distribute among comic creators releasing projects with the company in its first three years.

Scholastic Apologizes for Suggesting Maggie Tokuda-Hall Cut “Racism” from Her Book

Recently, Scholastic reached out to author Maggie Tokuda-Hall to license her 2022 children’s book Love in the Library. But the request came with one major caveat—Scholastic asked Tokuda-Hall to revise her author’s note calling out “the deeply American tradition of racism.” According to the author, Scholastic went further to suggest she remove the word “racism” from the author’s note entirely. Tokuda-Hall said no, calling Scholastic’s request a “horrific demand for censorship.”

Two days later, Scholastic issued an apology. “In our initial outreach we suggested edits to Ms. Tokuda-Hall’s author’s note,” the company’s CEO Peter Warwick said in a statement. “This approach was wrong and not in keeping with Scholastic’s values. We don’t want to diminish or in any way minimize the racism that tragically persists against Asian-Americans… We must never do this again.” Scholastic says it hopes to share Tokuda-Hall’s book with the author’s note unchanged. It’s unclear whether Tokuda-Hall will consider Scholastic’s revised offer.

Hi Book Fam!

How are ya? I have to tell you my big news. My husband and I just celebrated our five year anniversary this past Friday, and yep, we’re still going strong. And that feels amazing. So anyway. Thanks for giving me the platform to say that. And moving on, let’s talk books.

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei (Flatiron Books, July 28)

You like sci-fi? Thrillers? Mystery? Space adventure? Why not all of that together all in one book? That’s what you’re going to get with Yume Kitasei’s debut novel The Deep Sky. It’s out in July, but I already can’t wait!

There is only one surviving witness: Asuka, the one who was picked last to join the program and the one who struggled most with training leading up to the mission. Immediately, Asuka becomes a prime suspect. Now, as the crew begins to turn on each other, Asuka must figure out who is really responsible for the bombing. Their entire mission may depend on it.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“‘What I don’t understand,’ said Gaspar, realizing this was a moment when he could talk to his dad, something that had been impossible for months, ‘is why the sky is dark at night, when with all those stars there should be more light.’

‘There’s even a term for that: someone’s paradox, I can’t remember the guy’s name. You’re asking a question that still doesn’t have an answer, I think. Or maybe they’ve discovered it and I don’t know about it. There’s something called dark matter and it pushes on the stars, that’s why they get farther and farther away. Three-quarters of the universe is darkness. There’s much more darkness than light above us.'”

Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

Here’s an interesting conversation that happened on social media recently: if you get an advanced reader’s copy (ARC) of a book and you don’t read and review it, are you committing theft?!?! Our fave Jess Owens breaks it down on Book CommuniTEA.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

tuxedo cap on lap of a person who is yes still in her pajamas

I don’t normally share pictures with me in them, but I had to share this special moment I had with Remy today. He’s still only a year old, so stillness isn’t really his forte. But as he’s starting to get older, we are getting some lap cat moments. And I just want to celebrate them when they happen. I can’t wait to see how this baby kitten grows into a cuddly, snuggly cat. He’s the best.

And with that, let me wish you a great weekend before we go our separate ways until next week. Remember to cuddle cats (or dogs if that’s your thing). And read some good books!

Gone Girl Author Gillian Flynn Discusses New Imprint and New Book

Gillian Flynn, author of three best-selling novels including Gone Girl, recently sat down with TODAY.com to discuss her new imprint and her long-awaited next book. Flynn said she started her new imprint, Gillian Flynn Books, as a way to “really champion books that don’t necessarily fit into one specific shape, that are as quirky and big-voiced and unique as I want.” Flynn’s first book under her imprint is Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy. As for her own writing, Flynn says that she’s still interested in writing psychological novels, although they do not necessarily have to be thrillers. “That’s how I started writing thrillers — it was not to necessarily write a thriller, but to be able to say something and attach it to a freight train of a thriller,” she says. “I found that a very useful way, personally for me as a storyteller, to write about larger things like gender within marriage and power struggle within marriage.” So will her next novel be a different genre? No details have been announced, but Flynn says it would be a fun test for her.
