How Former President Barack Obama Picks Book Recommendations: Today in Books

Morena Baccarin Says Her Deadpool 3 Return “May or May Not Work Out”

Will Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa Carlysle be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? In a recent interview of the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Baccarin said she is being courted to star in the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie. But Baccarin said “we have not agreed on terms,” and “it may or may not work out.” This sequel will be the first Deadpool film set in the MCU. And now that the MCU multiverse is in play, Vanessa Carlylse could potentially return, despite her death at the beginning of Deadpool 2. “I do think this movie, since Marvel-Disney acquired this Deadpool universe, they’re trying to reinvent it a little bit,” Baccarin added. “This movie is going to be much more about Wolverine and Deadpool. So we’ll see. Hugh is going to be a huge part of it. I’m sure he’ll be great.”

MPIBA Booksellers Talk Book Bans in Texas

On April 5-7 in San Antonio, Texas, the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association Spring Con was held, attracting more than 150 professionals. One big topic of conversation at the convention: book bans. The Texas legislature is likely to vote on Senate Bill 13 soon. This bill, among other things, would criminalize exposing children to “harmful material,” and create “school library advisory councils” to ensure “local community values are reflected in each school library catalog.” Booksellers are aware of how harmful this bill would be, and so this topic was on many people’s minds. Charley Rejsek, CEO of BookPeople in Austin and Meghan Goel, children’s book buyer, led a session with Texas booksellers about how to fight the passage of this bills and others like them.

How Former President Barack Obama Picks Book Recommendations

Former president Barack Obama’s reading recommendations list has been highly anticipated every year since he first released one in 2009. “First, it’s exciting to see which books you’ve read that a former president has read too, and second, he always offers an array of diverse reads, so you know you’re also bound to find something new and impactful to read next,” said Julianne Buonocore, founder of the book and lifestyle blog The Literary Lifestyle. But does Obama actually read all of the books he recommends? And how does he come up with his recommendations? Sophie Vershbow from Esquire investigates Barack Obama’s reading list process here.

this delicious death book cover

This Delicious Death by Kayla Cottingham (Sourcebooks, April 25)

I don’t know about you, but April has got me in the mood for some sapphic horror. Okay, who am I kidding? Every month of the year, I’m in the mood for sapphic horror. But Kayla Cottingham, author of My Dearest Darkest, has got a new one out this month that is particularly exciting.

This book is set two years after a portion of the population underwent a transformation known as “the Hollowing.” Those who were affected, now called “the hollow people” (I know, rude) can now only survive by consuming human flesh. To combat this disease, scientists created Synflesh, synthetic human meat which is meant to satisfy the hollow people’s hunger.

Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine are four hollow girls just looking to have a little fun before graduation. When they head to a music festival with a cooler filled with seltzer, vodka, and Synflesh, all they want is a good time. But on the first night of the festival, Val goes feral and kills one of the band members. And as festival guests start dying all around them, the girls realize someone is targeting their kind.

School Bans Comic Book of Diary of Anne Frank Over “Sexually Explicit” Cartoon Statues

A Florida principal recently removed Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation from the Vero Beach High School library for its depictions of “sexually explicit” statues. The book was removed after a local chapter of the anti-LGBTQ+ group Moms for Liberty (MOL) complained about the book’s images and argued that it was “not a true adaptation of the Holocaust.” Jennifer Pippin, chair of MOL’s Indian River County chapter, complained about a scene in which Anne Frank walks past statues of nude women. “I must admit, every time I see a female nude, I go into ecstasy,” Frank’s words on the statue panel read. “If only I had a girlfriend!” This is a shorter version of the words that appeared in Anne Frank’s diary. Indian River County school district spokesperson Cristen Maddux told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), “[The graphic novel is] not the actual diary of Anne Frank. It’s a fictional novel that has some inappropriate content in it….[It] was removed due to minimization of the Holocaust.”

This Book is Gay Author Juno Dawson Says America’s Teens Have Bigger Problems Than Her Book

Juno Dawson, author of This Book is Gay, recently sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the banning of her book, which is currently the ninth most-banned book in America. This Book is Gay was published in 2014 and was written as a way to offer sexual education to LGBTQ+ youth. However, conservatives have argued that the book’s contents are pornographic. “It was not surprising,” Dawson said of her book being banned. “It was disappointing…But we know why. It’s because the people challenging to ban books in the U.S. became a much more organized campaign.” In response to whether or not the contents of her book could be considered pornographic, Dawson said, “I would challenge anyone to be titillated or aroused by what is essentially a textbook. What I would say, however, is that it’s thorough. We teach young people who are 11, 12, and 13 years old how babies are made. We teach them about sexual intercourse, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections. And that’s great and we should be doing that. But I also think LGBTQ+ people should be taught about sexual relationships.” You can read the full interview at Rolling Stone.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“I had always assumed love carried itself easily through various permutations and disintegrations. Now I find myself disassociating them from the people I had known my parents to be. I can’t decide which is worse, coming up against the limitations of their souls or the limitations of my love.”

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

We love to see authors supporting authors on social media. Afer author Suzanne Young shared a picture of a room full of empty chairs at a Barnes & Noble book signing event last week, authors came out of the woodwork to show their support. Young’s post has since gone viral. The author, who was promoting her new novel In Nightfall, called her empty book signing a “career low point” and said that she was “crying the entire way home.” But authors, including Neil Gaiman, have taken to social media to share their similar experiences. Young says she has been overwhelmed by the responses. The author tweeted, “Genuinely, I didn’t know how common this was until now. But this outpouring of support has been incredible.”

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Oh hey, I made a meme of Murray using the official Barbie meme maker. Are you all as excited for this movie as I am? Murray is excited obviously. He’s also hitting the dance floor.

Now time to make Barbie memes of your cat, and send them to me!

And that’s all for Thursday’s Book Radar. We’ll talk again soon, friends!
