New City, New Romance

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Today is the last day of school for us here and it’s a half day. It’s hard to believe that my son’s freshmen year is already over and next year he’ll be a sophomore. I know he’s looking forward to having the summer off and doing what he wants to do all day: staying glued to a screen. However, I’m planning on enforcing a screen detox of sorts and trying to get him to explore more than the digital world. We’ll see how it goes.

Speaking of summer starting, as a heads up there will not be a newsletter due to Memorial Day being observed in the U.S.

If you haven’t already checked out Book Riot’s latest podcast First Edition, you’re really missing out. Here, co-founder Jeff O’Neal explores the entirety of the bookish world, using interviews, recommendations, and more from well-known people in the bookish community. The most recent episode has a discussion between Jeff and Khaled Hosseini and their thoughts on the 20th anniversary of The Kite Runner and its lasting impact.

With summer around the corner, I’m sure there will be a lot of trips to waterparks, regular parks, and other outdoor places, not to mention trips to the library for those who also want to enforce screen restrictions. What better way to carry all the incidentals you’ll need, or borrowed books, than this trope that is also an homage to one of the more popular romance tropes? $20

Riot Recommendations

One of my best friends recently moved. And I don’t mean down the street or to another adjacent suburb — she moved an entire seven states away. That is a huge change and I know she’s nervous and excited. I’m super proud of her for taking this step because, while it is a huge one, it is also one she has been wanting to make for the last three years. But life and of course a worldwide pandemic prevented it until now.

Now, she didn’t do this for her significant other nor is she looking at this as a chance to start a new relationship. I feel like I need to make sure that’s clear in case she or any of our mutual friends read this. But it did get me to thinking how a big move like this is also the catalyst for finding a new relationship in a lot of romance novels. Sometimes it is the reason for the move and sometimes it is just a happy effect. Listed below are just a few that fit this mold.

cover of Her Big City Neighbor

Her Big City Neighbor by Jackie Lau

After bubbly Amy inherits a house in Toronto, she decides it is the perfect opportunity to move away from well-meaning family members and a selfish ex to start over and be her own independent person. Once there she meets Victor, her grumpy tattooed neighbor and starts up a neighbors-with-benefits relationship with him. But she also has to make sure she doesn’t put herself in a position to be taken advantage of again, no matter what secrets Victor may be hiding under his gruff façade.

cover of Leather and Lace

Leather and Lace by Rebel Carter

Mary came to Gold Sky Montana at her overbearing mother’s insistence, specifically to look for a husband. And it isn’t a ‘want’ situation but rather a ‘need’. When her first attempt at a match fails, she finds herself drawn to Alex, who also happens to be a woman. Not expecting to feel this way but also not wanting to pass up a chance at happiness, the two women take advantage of the openness of the small town to enter into matrimony.

If you like your romance with a thread of erotica, then this list is for you.

Here are just some of the 2023 romance releases that have already been published or will be soon.

And that’s it for today. Remember, you won’t get another newsletter until next Thursday because of Memorial Day here in the U.S. If you have a long weekend, I hope it’s enjoyable. In the meantime, can still be found posting over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Dual Timeline Romances

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

School ends this Thursday, which means that summer break is just around the corner for us. Well for the kiddo, anyways. Summer is different when you’re an adult ’cause, as we all know, you don’t really get the two and a half to three months off. Still, it can be fun as an adult; you just have to find ways to make it so. One thing I am doing to help with this is a throwback summer-long buddy read with one of my friends. We are primarily focusing on YA and MG horror that we read growing up, but other genres may get thrown in. Either way, it will be a reading adventure.

If you haven’t already checked out Book Riot’s latest podcast First Edition, you’re really missing out. Here, co-founder Jeff O’Neal explores the entirety of the bookish world, using interviews, recommendations, and more from well-known people in the bookish community. The most recent episode has a discussions between Jeff and Khaled Hosseini and their thoughts on the 20th anniversary of The Kite Runner and its lasting impact.

Keeping with the theme of throwbacks, isn’t this just an amazing shirt? I love the homage to the classic clinch cover and that it also showcases people of color with it. This is definitely a book I would pick up off the cover alone. $22

New Releases

cover of Sun of a Beach

Sun of a Beach by Mia Sosa

Despite the tropical setting, Naomi is not happy to be saddled with the task of accompanying Donovan along on the photo shop for the first swimsuit edition for M-Class Magazine. Donovan himself is none too pleased at this since he perceives it as a way to control his creative genius and goes out of his way to purposefully annoy Naomi. However, the island setting is the perfect background for a new romance to develop between the two and make them look at each other with new eyes.

cover of Love At First Set

Love At First Set by Jennifer Dugan

When gym enthusiast Lizzie agrees to accompany her best friend James to his sister’s wedding, she inadvertently ends up talking the bride out of walking down the aisle. Cara, said runaway bride, is now single and not sure what comes next. James convinces Lizzie to help Cara rebound with a quick fling, but as the two women spend more time together, real feelings quickly develop. Even though Lizzie is worried that she will never be good enough for Cara.

One of my favorite romcoms that I also feel is vastly underrated is Forget Paris. My spouse was the one who introduced me to this movie years ago. He loved it and figured I would too because I liked romance. And he was right.

I think one of the reasons this movie is underrated is because it’s told in an interesting format. You hear about Mickey and Ellen’s relationship in flashbacks as their friends tell the story of their ups and downs with the most recent development being that they separated. Now, it’s still a romcom, so of course you know they end up together, but I will be honest in that it is something I would classify as an HFN since there is no way to know if they tried to work through their issues.

Still, I love that type of back and forth storytelling because it gives both aspects: the before and the after. And it shows how sometimes, even if people don’t readily admit it, love is hard and some days you have to work at it. With that in mind, here are today’s recommendations, which are stories told in a dual timeline.

cover of Back in the Day

Back in the Day by Katrina Jackson

While Amir is helping his father Alonzo pack up his home, he comes across a box of records that his father refuses to get rid of. Confused by this stubbornness, Amir pushes the issue until his dad relents and explains to him the history behind the box, which is the unfolding of his love story with Amir’s mother, Ada, that began in 1967. While I would agree that this is an unconventional romance novel, I stand by that it is still a romance because, even though it begins after her death, we still get to experience Alonzo and Ada’s love story and the they family built before her passing.

cover of Love and Other Words

Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren

This book is about estranged childhood friends Macy and Elliot and what happens after they run into each other as adults. It’s told in alternating timelines from when they were young friends to a period when they were more before they separated and then meet up again. When they do, they both realize it’s a chance to make amends for the hurt in the past and perhaps work towards a second chance at love.

Take this quiz to find how you receive and show love.

Plan a date and get which romcom heroine you are.

And that’s all I have for today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with another romance-filled newsletter. In the meantime I can be found floating around over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then happy reading and stay hydrated.

Multiple Tropes for the Price of One

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

How are y’all doing out there? It’s been a minute since I’ve done a random check in so I hope that you’re doing well and if things are more challenging that they ease up soon. I’m in a “meh” mood myself so I’m just trying to take things day by day and appreciate the little things in life that bring me joy. Currently, one of those is the song Jericho by Iniko. It is pretty much on a constant loop.

Be sure to to check out Book Riot’s latest podcast, First Edition. BR co-founder Jeff O’Neal explores the entirety of the bookish world with interviews, recommendations, and more from well-known people in the bookish community. Be sure to listen to the most recent one to see if Jeff and Rebecca can help pick the “It” book for May and hear editor Erica Ezeifedi debut the new “Reading Stories” section where we learn about the time she tried to buy a new mom for a dollar, as one does!

But Luke is more than a little intrigued by this woman and offers her a trade: he’ll help her learn how to ‘people’ and she will help him with opening up his own firm. You know what’s better than one trope in a romance novel? Multi-tropes! Also, does anyone else think of that one scene from The Fifth Element whenever they hear the word multi paired up with something, or is it just me?

Anyways, I love it when a romance novel has more than one trope in it. Don’t get me wrong though: I do think that there is a limit on how many tropes can be in a book before it just seems like a mess. But two or three? That I can get down with.

So that is what I’m recommending today; books with more than one trope. Enjoy!

cover of Bidding for the Bachelor

Bidding for the Bachelor by Jackie Lau

Tropes: sibling’s (ex) best friend, roommates, close proximity

As the only singleton left, Cedric is the only candidate for the bachelor auction to benefit his family’s charity. This results in a frenzied bidding war where Brian, Cedric’s brother’s ex best friend, rescues him by placing the highest bid. At their date, Brian finds out Cedric needs a place to stay and offers the spare room. With such close quarters, the scene is set for attraction to build and between the two men, resulting in a relationship that neither expected.

cover of All Downhill With You

All Downhill With You by Julie Olivia

Tropes: grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers, co-worker romance

Lorelai loves amusement parks, especially rollercoasters, so she enjoys her job at the Honeywood Fun Park. When the star rollercoaster breaks down with her at the top, engineer Emory is called in to fix it. He is the grump to Lorelai’s sunshine and, despite his job, not a fan of rides and only cares about his company. So naturally they are at odds. However as they work to repair the coaster, strong and unexpected feelings begin to develop.

If you’ve been craving some biker romances, this list has you covered.

Pick a romcom movie and get the perfect job.

Can’t argue with a list like this.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday with another newsletter. In the meantime, you can find me over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then happy reading and stay hydrated.

Monster Lover Recommendations

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Man I don’t know what it is about this year, but I am developing pickier habits when it comes to what I’m reading. So far I have DNFed a total of six books this year. And May just started. In 2021, my total was seven books for the entire year. And I’m one of those people who almost never goes back to a book I quit, and it’s always a permanent parting of ways.

Now it’s not a slump or anything since I’m still actively reading; I am just more selective with what I see all the way to the end. Currently, I’m still making my way through Lone Women, Happy Place, and have added Her Big City Neighbor to the mix.

If you haven’t already checked out Book Riot’s latest podcast First Edition, you’re really missing out. Here co-founder Jeff O’Neal explores the entirety of the bookish world, using interviews, recommendations, and more from well-known people in the bookish community. While the first couple of interactions are tense, they soon soften as a tentative friendship begins to develop. And when attraction gets thrown into the mix, it makes them wonder if they can have a successful business and romantic partnership.

Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay

These plans are drastically changed when she is told she will be chaperoning her half-brother for the summer and accompanying him to the library as he prepares for a robotics competition. As Sam is not a reader, this sounds like a nightmare to her, especially when she discovers that the library’s temporary director is the same man whose book she knocked into the ocean on the ferry ride over. What she doesn’t know is that Bennett is not holding this against her and has been thinking of her ever since.

The other day my spouse was excitedly telling me about Caged Wolf, the new book they started listening to. And boy was he excited. Now, I knew based on the synopsis all the things that the book entailed and was just waiting for the revelation to hit him.

When he got home later that night, he looked at me and said, “With the new book I am listening to…does that make me a monster lover?”*
*you know the word that really goes here*

At that point, I smiled and said, “Yes. To be fair, I always suspected you were.”

In honor of this self-revelation, here are some monster lover romances! As always, be sure to check for various TW/CWs on each title.

cover of I Married a Lizardman

I Married a Lizardman by Regine Abel

Susan is about to be 25 and her prospects for a spouse seem to be dwindling. So she signs up for an arranged marriage from the Prime Mating Agency and ends up with grumpy lizardman Olix as her match. He isn’t necessarily overjoyed at this match himself, although they resolve to try to make the best of it. To both Susan and Olix’s surprise, though, they end up being exactly what the other needed.

cover of She Came From the Swamp

She Came From the Swamp by Darva Green

To escape her family’s dangerous cult, Nadezhda flees to the house her grandmother left her. Since it is located on a swamp life preserve, it is the perfect place to disappear for a bit. Unbeknownst to her, the house also comes with the kikimora that has been following her family for years. When Nadezhda comes face to face with this creature, she is forced to rethink all the stories she’s been given about this beautiful monster and considers becoming a willing “sacrifice” to her.

The way this made me laugh. And it is oh so appropriate for today’s theme.

This list of mermaid romances is also in alignment.

Pick one of two characters from teenage dramas and get your love language.

And that is all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back on Thursday though with more romance related goodness for y’all. In the meantime, you can find me floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then happy reading and stay hydrated!

Today is Twilight Zone Day! Not sure why May 11th was chosen for this day since it doesn’t appear to be tied to creator Rod Sterling in any way, but hey, I’m going to roll with it.

From my personal observance, there has been a resurgence in people watching The Twilight Zone. Don’t get me wrong; it has never not been a pivotal point of pop culture since it came out. But I do feel that the newer fans have realized the undertones to every story and are talking about it on various social media platforms which in turn is drawing older fans to re-watch with that new mindset.

That’s a topic that could take an entire article or two, so I won’t get too much further into that. However, it is a topic that also leads us to today’s themes for recommendations which are sci-fi romances.

TBR Trope Cards, “Ghosting” Romances and More

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

It’s been somewhat quiet in my house lately. Now you may be asking why since y’all know I have a teenager who is very busy and energetic; so, that’s fair. Hence the “somewhat.” Our TV decided to give up last week and shut off in the middle of the episode of Not Dead Yet I was watching. I think it’s something internal since the red light is still there. It just won’t turn on at all. C’est la vie.

I am taking the opportunity to focus more on reading, though, so there’s the perk there, especially with the haul I got for IBD. I finally started Delilah Green Doesn’t Care and am enjoying it immensely. I’m also reading Happy Place as well as Lone Women (and am desperately wondering what the hell is in that trunk).

When I was looking for recommendations for second chance romances, these two books popped up in my search and the lightbulb went off for another recommendation theme: ghosting romances!

Now, an argument could certainly be made that these are still considered second chance romances, due to the nature of the separation. And I won’t argue that they would be under that umbrella. So you could certainly think about this as a second set of second chances.

However, one could also argue that it’s a sub-genre of a sub-genre because of the ghosting nature. In other second chances, both parties typically come to an agreement that it’s over for whatever reason. In these, one was left high and dry with no update, which makes the reconciliation a little more tricky. But it still happens ’cause it’s a romance and we’re all about the HEAs over here!

Bookish Earrings, New Releases, and Second Chances

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

As promised, here is the update from my Independent Bookstore Day. My friend and I ended up going to a total of five stores and I walked away with a total of seven new-to-me books. It was a mix of genres, but romance-wise I picked up a finished copy of Just As Your Are, The Fiancée Farce, and Mangos and Mistletoes. I also snagged two horror novels Mary, Will I Die and The Loop from a local author, as well as Ghost Squad and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

We also picked up a passport for IBD, so we will be making some day trips soon to visit the remaining four to get our stamps and more books!

Speaking of finding joy in all things bookish, be sure to check out Book Riot’s latest podcast First Edition. Here co-founder Jeff O’Neal explores the entirety of the bookish world, using interviews, recommendations, and more from well-known people in the bookish community. One recent episode had Editors Vanessa Diaz and Kelly Jensen reminiscing on their initial introduction to Judy Blume’s classic, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret as well as their take re-reading it as an adult, which was the catalyst for me snagging a new copy for my own reread.

Riot Recommendations

One of the more divisive sub-genres in the romance world is the second chance romance. There are certainly others and I’m sure if you got down to the brass tacks, every sub-genre could be considered divisive. However, there are a certain few that stand out in the two fields of “for or against” and second chance is one of them.

Now, personally, I’m a fan because I think there is a variety of options with these. Most people think of a second chance with a former lover which is the one that most people either love or hate. There is also the second chance with someone where the opportunity couldn’t be or wasn’t taken before. The specifics for those can vary depending on the plot but it is still considered a second chance romance nonetheless. The latter category is what today’s recommendations fall into. Enjoy!

Can’t Resist Her by Kianna Alexander

Even though they went to the same high school, Summer and Aiko only interacted one time. However that one time resulted in a very passionate kiss that neither woman has been able to forget. When Summer returns home to Austin, it seems like the perfect second chance for them — except when they find themselves on opposites side of their alma mater’s upcoming demolition. Will they be able to still make it work or is their second chance doomed before it can really even start?

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes Thursday with another fresh newsletter and in the meantime I can be found on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Happy May! Get Ready for Some New Releases and Witchy Romances

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

It’s the first of May! That means a lot of different things for some people. Teachers and students alike are likely looking forward to the end of school. People may kick off summer by going to the beach as a family before settling into summer. As for me, my mind is boggled that I’m this close to having a high school sophomore. The time…it flies.

Be sure to check out Book Riot’s latest podcast First Edition. It’s Me, Margaret as well as their take rereading it as an adult. No matter what your reading preference, you’ll find something for you here!

Riot Recommendations

There has been a lot of righteous woman rage lately. And I say righteous because, while we’ve always had some reason to be angry, it is especially true as of late. This mentality is being expressed in songs like “Labour” and “Little Girl Gone” and in the wave of witchy books that have been hitting our shelves recently, both in and outside the romance genre.

In honor of this, and to follow the bookish good I shared earlier, I’m going to boost more witchy romances today. It’s always a good time for a romance book and it’s always a good time for a witchy book. And when you combine the two of them? *chef’s kiss*

And they have to do it while staying at a B&B with just one bed.

And that’s all I have for y’all this fine Monday. I’ll be back in your inboxes Thursday though and in the meantime I can be found floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated!

Gothic Romance Vibes

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

I know that we just got to Monday but I’m already excited for this weekend. Why? Because Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day! This is different from Bookstore Romance Day, which is in August. Both days are cause for book dragons to celebrate though! One of my friends and I are planning on a bookstore crawl for four of the indies nearby and will end the day with Tex-Mex food and margaritas. So, it’s going to be great and we’re also being accountable for one another so we don’t go too wild because, after all…we’re planning on visiting four different stores.

Before we move on to more romance related fun, are you on the hunt for fascinating insider stories from long-standing experts in the book and publishing world? Then you should check out The Deep Dive, Book Riot’s latest newsletter. For just $5 a month, you’ll receive exclusive content via email twice a month. Riot Recommendations

As mentioned earlier, the long running musical The Phantom of the Opera recently ended its run on Broadway back on April 16th. Now, I never got to see it on Broadway personally, but I have seen it a handful of times whenever the touring company came through my city. Once I even got to see it at the Paramount in San Antonio when my Aunt Judy got us tickets as a graduation gift.

And y’all, when I say my Auntie hooked us up on the seats, I’m not exaggerating. We felt the breeze when the chandelier came crashing to the stage.

Now, the book itself is not straight-up romance. In fact, it’s kinda all over the place, genre wise. Andrew Lloyd Webber mentioned this in one of the behinds the scenes featurettes for the 2004 screen adaptation and he’s not wrong. But no one can deny the Gothic vibes, which is what the focus of today’s recommendations are. As an aside, please note that while there is a love story in both of the books, it may not be as present as others I’ve recommended in the past.

cover of Fables & Other Lies

There her paths cross River’s, one of her family’s rivals, and she accepts his invitation to a gala at his familial home.
