Enemies to Lovers, But On a Boat!

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

April is almost over and it’s really hard to reconcile with that. I feel that this year is speeding by, which may or may not be a feeling you share. It also doesn’t really help that I feel like I’m so busy with everything that I can’t keep up with it all, or make sure I have some ‘me’ time. I’m not trying to have a pity party of one or anything like that but between personal and real world stuff, everything is just so draining. Here’s hoping that it turns around soon though!

Before we move on to more romance-related fun, are you on the hunt for fascinating insider stories from long standing experts in the book and publishing world? Then you should check out The Deep Dive, Book Riot’s latest newsletter. For just $5 a month, you’ll receive exclusive content via email twice a month. You can also try The Splash Pad for free, which is a monthly round up of bookish goods and reading recommendations. Read more about this and your membership level today at bookriot.substack.com.

Riot Recommendations

Lately I have been really wanting a pet; I don’t know what prompted this but I’ve felt it for a while. Now do I plan on getting one soon? No, and it’s purely because I’m still in an apartment and the pet deposit and rent is too damn high even for something small like a hedgehog or a hamster. Plus my apartment is not as big as I would like it for having any kind of pet, so it will stay a dream deferred until I get a house.

In the meantime I can read about all the pets I want in romance books, like the ones recommended today. As an added bonus, these books feature a rescue program with pets, which is something that is always needed and appreciated.

cover of The Bookshop Rescue

The Bookshop Rescue by Rochelle Alers

Bookstore owner Lucy decides that one way she can start work on her broken heart is by fostering pregnant golden retriever Buttercup. When it is time for the puppies to make their entrance into the world, neighbor Calum helps to deliver the litter. cover of Rescue You

There she comes across grumpy Rhett, who is completely unprepared for how quickly she breaks down his emotional walls. Riot Recommendations

A few weeks ago, I actually went to an actual movie theater to watch Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And I loved every minute of it. It was entertaining, funny, emotional, etc…all the good things. Now admittedly, I did go in with the mindset of basically seeing an actual campaign being played out rather than a story (if that makes sense), but even if I hadn’t, I would have liked it. Every performer involved played their role perfectly and there were enough D&D references to keep all levels of fans satisifed.

Fantasy romance has never been something I have gravitated towards, but I have recently been dipping my toe more into it with books like The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and Legends & Lattes. After seeing the movie, though, I will admit I’m even more interested in checking out this sub-genre and seeing that it has to offer. Which leads us to today’s recommendations: fantasy romances.

cover of Prince of Flowers

Prince of Flowers by Nazri Noor

All of his life, Locke has tried to get from behind his father’s shadow and stand on his own two magical feet. When one of these efforts results in him summoning Sylvain, a fae prince, he has his work cut out for him to try to show he can tame him and prove his worth as a summoner, especially considering how determined Sylvain is to challenge him at every turn. The attraction between the two men only serves to further complicate the situation.

cover of The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner

When down on her luck — and behind on her rent — Dellaria sees a “for help” sign seeking women willing to become bodyguards, and she fast talks her way into the group. She soon finds herself drawn to Winn, one of her fellow bodyguards, and thinks this is the perfect chance for romance as well as an easy job. However, things take a turn and soon Delly and Winn, along with a necromancer, a shapeshifter, and an undead mouse, must work together to stop an evil from being completely unleashed in their lands.

Speaking of fantasy romances, Kimberly Lemming recently announced a title change to the third book in the Mead Mishaps series via this TikTok. She also made this one regarding her approach to title pitches, and I snorted.

Also, this was just too cute to not share.

This one is for all my fellow Nick Miller fans. I took it twice and still got the same answer, so I’m making my peace with being Kai ’cause she was pretty cool, even if she wasn’t around that long.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with another romance round up. In the meantime I can be found floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Happy Scrabble Day!

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Today is Scrabble Day! Scrabble is connected to a memory I have about my Dad. I got my love of the game from him and loved playing with him. Now, even though I never won a game going one-on-one with him, I do remember the one time I scored higher than him in a game with other family members. When he reminded me that I still lost, I replied, “Yes but I beat you and that’s victory enough for me!” If you’re also a fan of the game, be sure to celebrate today or, if you can’t do that, exercise your brain with a crossword puzzle.

In reading news and updates, I still have a lot of books on my plate, as per the norm, including a hubby buddy read. But in the romance world, I’m still making my way through Reggie & Delilah’s Year of Falling and The Nanny, which released this past Tuesday. This is an amazing sex positive book with a DILF to swoon over so be sure to pick up a copy to enjoy.

Riot Recommendations

My original idea for the recommendations section today was books that had something to do with Scrabble or even crosswords. But try as I might, my search engine powers weren’t awesome enough to find them. Le sigh. Such is life.

Instead I decided to focus on novels that featured the word ‘game’ in it. After all Scrabble is a game isn’t it? So, I’m still counting it as a part of the theme. Enjoy!

cover of The Marriage Game

The Marriage Game by Sara Desai

Due to unforeseen life circumstances, Layla returns home to begin the process of rebuilding her life. Her father cheerfully gives her the necessary office space above his restaurant to do so and also sets up a dating profile for her to set her up on blind dates. One of her first ones ends up being with Sam, who also ends up being an office mate after a series of zany events. The close quarters make for short tempers but are also the perfect setting for a romance to blossom.

cover of A Game of Hearts and Heists

A Game of Hearts and Heists by Ruby Roe

In this fantasy romance we meet Scarlett, a former assassin, and Quinn, former medic and now a poisoner for hire. The two women are rivals and also sometimes bedfellows, which makes their relationship interesting to say the least. When the Magician Queen offers them a job that will force them to team up together, neither can refuse it, nor can they ignore that their relationship is rapidly moving towards becoming actual lovers faster than they could have guessed.

If you’re needing a pick me up, check out some of these romcoms.

Speaking of romcoms, take this quiz to find out which decade of those you’re more aligned with.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I hope you have a great weekend, whatever your plans are. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday with a fresh edition and in the meantime I can be found floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Riot Recommendations

The first weekend of April, the touring company for Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations came through my city. Now, I am a huge theater person but because of a multitude of reasons, I haven’t been to one in a long time. In fact, the last time I went to the theater was in early 2019 when my friend let me be her date for Hamilton, which was amazing y’all.

When I heard this show was coming into town, I made myself a promise that, come hell or high water, I would see it. The Temptations were my dad’s favorite musical group. Even though my mother’s was The Four Tops (we’re a total Motown family y’all) their song was “My Girl” and that was the song that we danced to for our Father/Daughter dance. So yeah, it was gonna happen even if I went solo, which is what actually ended up happening.

And it was worth it. I loved the show and it is one that I will make it a point to go see every time it’s near me. It was a bit emotional, especially when “My Girl” came on. Who am I kidding…I teared up at the opening song, “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” My poor seat neighbor had to deal with a strange woman in orange with matching hair rapidly alternating between crying, singing softly, and dancing.

I’ve mentioned before I grew up in a family of readers and this resulted in us sharing books. Dad was one of those who didn’t discriminate by genre. If it seemed interesting to him, he would read it. This included romance novels and he had no shame in his enjoyment of them. That leads to today’s recommendation theme, which are romance books that Dad thoroughly enjoyed.

cover of Indigo

Indigo by Beverly Jenkins

No need to recap this one as I’ve mentioned it multiple times before, something I’m not sorry for. It had such a lasting effect on my romance reading and was our introduction to the divine Ms. Bev. That said, if I had to guess, I think Dad’s favorite was probably Through the Storm since that was one that I felt included a lot more history. It’s also one that I have also previously recommended, as you can’t go wrong with a Jenkins. So, we’ll call this one a double recommendation.

cover of Agnes and the Hitman

Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie

On paper, food critic Agnes and hitman Shane couldn’t be more different, and there was no way they would have encountered each other organically. However, after a series of madcap hijinks — including, but not not limited to, attempted dognapping, wedding plans going awry, rival hitmen, and a large amount of missing money — the two become close as they struggle to survive as well as determine this new relationship that is quickly blossoming between them.

And that’s all I have for you today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with more romance related fun. In the meantime, I can be found floating around on Twitter under @PScirbe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Riot Recommendations

Today is Sorry Charlie Day. Now, I’ll freely admit that I did not know until a few years ago that the Charlie being referenced was the one from the Starkist Tuna Fish commercials. I always thought it was alluded to Charlie Brown, which, in my defense, is a logical deduction to make cause his luck is pretty terrible.

This is one of those slogans that has truly stood the test of time though because it’s still widely used even if not everyone knows the full story behind it. I use it a lot myself, especially with the Teenager because you know life is just so unfair at that age. For me, it’s essentially a slightly softer way of saying “Them’s the breaks, kid.”

Anyways, that leads to today’s recommendation theme which are romance novels where one of the main characters is named Charlie or a variation of it. I also won’t lie; this was a lot trickier than I anticipated. I’m sure it was one of those things though that if I wasn’t actively looking for it, it wouldn’t have been as tricky but since I was it took me a bit. But I did manage to find some so read on to see the results of my hunt!

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

I don’t know about y’all, but the view from my windows the last few days is indicating that the old adage about April showers will be true for us, at least for a few days. Riot Recommendations

The other day, my spouse was scrolling through TikTok (as you do) and the “Let’s Do It” musical scene from Tank Girl popped up on his FYP. Not sure what caused this to appear in his logarithm, but it reminded me of how much I love that movie.

Seriously, this was one of my go-to comfort movies in middle and high school. I can’t tell you why I enjoy it so much. I just know that I do. And I’m using the present tense because, as it turns out, he also enjoyed that movie growing up, so we decided to watch it together the other day and yeah…still a fan.

That lead me to thinking about how even the apocalypse can’t kill love. And I don’t mean just a romantical love. One of things about Rebecca, aka Tank Girl, is she has a big heart and she loves with all of it both romantically and platonically. If she decides you’re one of her people, she will do anything — including literally blowing something up — to save you.

With that in mind, here are today’s apocalyptic romance recommendations.

cover of Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole

When the lights go out worldwide, causing chaos to life as we know it, roommates Arden and John escape to his family’s cabin near the Canadian border. While they initially think they’re safe, scavengers soon shatter that illusion and it is John’s brother Gabriel who saves them. Arden is grateful for this, even though she also finds him to be a controlling jerk that she is undeniably attracted to, which is reciprocated. All of this leaves Arden and Gabriel at odds, but also knowledgeable of the fact that this found family situation works since they appear to only have each other.

cover of Praying for Rain

Praying for Rain by B.B. Easton

Unlike most of the other citizens in Franklin Springs, Rain didn’t leave when news that the apocalypse was three days away. In fact, she’s looking forward to the peace that it may bring her. On the other hand, Wes has purposefully returned to the town, looking to survive the end of the world. These two couldn’t be more different in their approach to this event, but they find themselves drawn to one another, leading them to wonder if their previously established plans can be changed.
Please note this is the first in a trilogy that follows the same characters.

If you like soccer romances, then this list is pefect for you.

If you have been searching for more romances set in America, check some or all of these out.

Pick a romantic movie, get your flower vibes.

Romantic Encounters of the Ghostly Kind

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

I did end up making it to the grand opening of The Book Burrow this last weekend. It was such a wonderful cozy space! I felt welcomed the moment I walked in and the owners were super friendly and talkative. I finally picked up my own copy of One Last Stop after the two of them told me how much they enjoyed it. I also did a Blind Date with a Book and ended up with YA novel None of the Above, which I have never heard of but am excited to read. Then I went to the symphony on Sunday with my cousin and had a great time there as always. All in all, a good weekend.

I started watching School Spirits on Paramount a couple of days ago and am enjoying it so far. In a way it’s giving off Veronica Mars vibes and I am here for that.

Watching that got me to thinking about how fascinated we humans have always been with ghost stories and not just in the horror genre. One of the first ghost romances I remember seeing and enjoying was actually in Charmed when John Cho guest-starred as a ghost whose murder the Halliwells had to help solve. Piper and him had a small romance that broke my heart cause he was dead-dead and there was no coming back from that.

Apologies, I got distracted by the sadness associated with that core memory. Today’s recommendations are ghostly romances where in one of the lead characters is a ghost. Of course since it’s romance, they don’t stay ghosts…HEAs forever y’all!

A Ghost in Shining Armor by Therese Beharrie

Gemma has a secret; she can see ghosts. And when she sees them she helps them with their unfinished business so they can move on. Levi is the latest in her ghostly companions; only snag is he feels his unfinished business is helping her reunite with her long-lost sister. There are multiple complications that come from this and along the way Gemma and Levi also have to face the fact that they are slowly falling in love.

Phantom Promise by Julie Leto

Paxton was cursed and turned into a phantom centuries ago and he has spent that entire time vowing to have his revenge. His chance at satisfying that thirst is Jeannette, the woman who has wandered into the chateau he haunts. However, while Jeannette may look like a naïve young lady, she is far from being easily deceived. Their mutual attraction cannot be ignored especially as it is, aided with a bit of magic. Once that happens, the lovers are left to deal with the multiple effects of this encounter.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday with another fresh edition. In the meantime, you can find me floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Riot Recommendations

I just finished an ARC of Just As You Are and I adored it. I know I’ve mentioned before that, even if I can’t get through the source material, I love Pride and Prejudice retellings. So this was right up my alley.

Even if you don’t like the source material or are like me and have never actually read it all the way through, it cannot be argued that it gave us one of the essential blueprints for romance novels that is still used today. That leads me to today’s recommendations, which are all retellings of the love between Lizzie and Darcy.

That said, for the most part, the plots are the same: there is the initial meeting, followed by Lizzie overhearing some not kind words that Darcy says about her, and the not-really-dislike takes over from there.

cover of Pride and Protest

Pride and Protest by Nicki Payne

In this retelling, Liza is a DJ who is working to stop her neighborhood from being taken over by gentrification and Dorsey is the CEO behind the property development firm. Of course, the sparks fly, even if the two are on opposite sides of that line.

cover of The Story of Lizzy and Darcy

The Story of Lizzy and Darcy by Grace Watson

Like Just As You Are, this spin on the classic tale is a F/F match up of the two lovers. What does make it stand out a bit more is that Lizzy and Darcy actually date in this one, so we get to see their relationship develop more in that regard.

Jonathan Majors looks paired with romance novel covers? Yes please!

Take this quiz to find out your Fictional Character Compatibility. Y’all, it told me I was compatible with Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, and I about lost my mind.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with a fresh edition and in the meantime, I can be found floating around Twitter under @PScribe801. Until our paths cross again, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Matchmaker and Frenemies Romances

Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Today I’m headed back to work after a week off. While I’m not overjoyed by it since we all do enjoy the time off, I thoroughly enjoyed all the way I spent my time off. In addition to hanging out with friends we haven’t seen in a bit, I also finally made it to the Libros Bookmobile in Taylor. Y’all, this was an adorable bookshop and I loved it and it will be added into my rotation of indie bookstore buys because I am all about boosting those. In case you’re wondering, I picked up Witchlings for myself and Nosotros Means Us for my bestie who is due next month.

I’ve mentioned in a previous sends that I very much have magpie tendencies and the way this bookmark caught my attention only further proves that statement. And honestly, it is very gorgeous and I love the intricate designs on it. This would make a beautiful addition to any book bookmark library because there’s a high probability that we all have a bookmark collection in addition to all our books. $20.

Riot Recommendations

One of my most anticpiated books this year was Talia Hibbert’s YA debut, Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute, which is a friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance. While that trope is more than a mouthful to say, it is a fairly popular one nowadays.

As a fan of both enemies-to-lovers and friends-to-lovers, I see the appeal in the marriage of both. After all, there is a reason that the thin line between love and hate exists. With that said, the recommendations for today feature both tropes.

Be My Spark by Nia Arthurs

Nellie and Jonas were childhood friends until they weren’t. Years later, they are paired up to work on a project to avoid a failing grade, they’re forced to face the hurts of the past as well as try to reconcile with the new feelings that are now developing between them. Please note this is listed as Book 5 in a series and is a college/NA romance.

cover of Just One Week

Just One Week by Chelsea M. Cameron

Emerald is not happy when her brother asks her to pick up Natalie, his girlfriend’s sister, who also happens to be her ex-best friend. In fact, the only reason she agrees to do it is because he offered to pay her. She’s determined to get through one week with Natalie and then she never has to think of her again. Which is all well and good until she sees Natalie and realizes how much she misses having her in her life. And then they share a kiss, which only further complicates her feelings.

I couldn’t resist sharing this picture my friend took of the Libros Bookmobile. Isn’t it adorable? And, on that note, that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with a fresh edition. As always, you can always find me over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.
