Hello and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

We’re halfway through March and rounding out the first quarter of 2023. If quarters are a thing for you at your job, I hope that this first one went well for you and set you up for success for the rest of the year. And if it was challenging don’t fret too much; you still have three more left!

I enjoyed my week off and did exactly what I wanted to do: a lot of visiting with friends for both my son and I, some writing, and some reading. I finished To Catch a Raven which, as per the normal for a Beverly Jenkins, was delightful. I also finished The Writing Retreat which was good but wow was it a wild ride. I’m going to need some light reading after that for sure so I’m focusing on Can’t Resist Her. I also have Lone Woman on my TBR table, and that is a siren’s call I won’t be able to ignore for long.

She knows small town living and love isn’t in her cards but Simon is also causing her to question the plans she had established for herself, leaving her to wonder if there is room for change.

Lucky in Lace by Melissa Brayden

Juliette is a stationary store owner who likes to live her life in a structured way. All of this is thrown into a tailspin when her best friend and ex find love with one another and a lingerie store becomes her next door neighbor. When she approaches Peyton, the owner of the store, to try to get her to make less scandalous displays, she is surprised to feel an instant attraction. Peyton also feels the same and is tempted to find all the ways she can loosen Juliette up.

Riot Recommendations

March is National Reading Month, an observation I’m sure we call can appreciate. Another thing I think we all enjoy is reading books about book lovers. Personally for me, it doesn’t even matter what genre it is since all I feel is a kinship with the characters in the book that share the same love for the written word. That leads up to today’s recommendations which are books where one or more of the characters are in bookish or book-related roles.

Prose Before Bros by Cathy Yardley

When Thuy’s best friend reaches out for help to save her business, she can’t refuse her. After all, Maddy has been there with her through a lot of her ups and downs. However, nothing has prepared the librarian for small town living (all the casseroles) or the feelings she finds herself catching when she looks at Drill, Maddy’s handsome biker brother.

Bending the Rules by Christina C Jones

Justin and Toni were lifelong friends until they weren’t. Years later, she is a literary agent returning home with the sole intentions of helping her parents with a book signing event and selling their house. He is the author behind said event though and he has other plans in mind, mainly reconciliation. What neither expected was that the years apart would add romantic feelings into the mix.

He discovers that his bloodline, among other things, is cursed and then has to work with his team to ensure that he doesn’t become its latest victim.

Today is Jewel Day. Yeah, I didn’t know that this was a thing, either! But, as someone who usually has a magpie’s love for all things sparkly and shiny, I’m here for it. I always love how much just adding a tiny bit of jewelry to an outfit can help it to pop even more.

Topaz by Beverly Jenkins

Kate is an investigative reporter and her latest story involves a dastardly villain who makes a living by scamming elderly Black folks. While in pursuit of this person, she finds herself rescued from unexpected danger by Black Seminole Marshall, Dix Wildhorse. Their strong personalities clash almost immediately but neither can deny the attraction that also lingers beneath the surface.

Diamond by Ruth Ryan Langan

Diamond is enraged when the prime suspect in her father’s murder is set free and sets out to seek her own vengeance. However, being struck by the tugging of desire for the man, she finds herself unable to pull the trigger. Those new feelings are coupled with suddenly being in charge of the family ranch and surprise multiple sisters coming out of the woodwork to mourn their father. She is left wondering if she will be able to not only find out who really killed her father but also adjust to all the new developments in her life and accept all the unplanned and unexpected love she now has in her life.

Lucky to Be Yours by Shannon O’Connor

Twenty-four year old Ellie is not looking for a relationship at all. Her game plan for St. Patty’s day is to have a one-time hook-up. Reese, known for being a player, steps into that role, expecting Ellie to cling once they’re done. However, when Ellie leaves without even asking for her phone number, Reese is intrigued. When their paths continue to cross, both women wonder if fate is playing a heavy hand in leading them towards something more.

Riot Recommendations

In the last couple of years, my spouse has started listening to more audiobooks. He prefers this format since he can listen to it at work. Trust me, there’s a reason for this background information.

Last week he mentioned that he was going to start running romance books by me for ‘sexy time stats’. Mind you, this came out of nowhere so of course I asked for more context. He responded with, “Do you remember Truth or Beard?” At which point I died laughing because well, if you’ve read it, you know how it starts.

Now, he isn’t a prude by any means; he just likes to be prepared. Otherwise, if he’s not expecting sexy times, he gets flustered. I’m not teasing him for this since I have the same mentality on some levels. That interaction is what led to today’s recommendations which are a few books that you may want to listen to with caution because of the sexy times.

The Roommate Risk by Talia Hibbert

When Jasmine suddenly needs a place to stay for an extended amount of time, she turns to her best friend Rahul for help. He of course doesn’t turn her down but the close quarters make it even more difficult for the two to ignore the attraction that has always been present between them. The first part of this story has a lot of flashbacks to when they first met. I was listening to one of said flashbacks walking into work one day but knowing they were friends told myself, “They’ll stop.” Readers… they didn’t stop.

Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefluer

This is similar to the last book in that it involves two lifelong friends who are suddenly roomies. The difference here is that Margot and Olivia didn’t remain as close over the years. So when they suddenly start living together, they have to deal with the sexual tension on top of unpacking what happened to their friendship. The resolution of both issues is pleasant for all involved. My love of this series is not a surprise to anyone, I’m sure. But this, to me at least, is by far the sexiest one on the trilogy. I blushed reading it so I can only imagine the effect it would have on an aural level.

You know one thing bringing me a lot of joy recently? In the last few years, I have really leaned into my tea drinking era. It’s perfect for mornings when I need the caffeine jolt, but for whatever reason, can’t handle or don’t want coffee. And it’s always great for winding down while reading. In fact, I finished Aphrodite and the Duke the other day while sipping a nice cup of chamomile tea.

Currently, some of my favorites are Lady Grey, Double Bergamot and Earl Grey, and Gunpower, which came onto my tea radar after reading Two Wrongs Make a Right. I’m sure I’ll branch out more soon, but in the meantime, a regular rotation of those will work just fine.

Rather, after seeing how overwhelmed he is with his temporary position, she volunteers to help out at the library. Chris happily takes her up on the offer. The more time they spend together, the more that the library, Sweetgum, and Brandi begin to feel like home to Chris, leaving him to wonder if it is time to set some roots down.

Ensnared In Her Symphony by Julie Dvorak

After the conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra has an accident, Maestro Virve steps in to help out. There, her path crosses with concert mistress Sabina. While Sabina is talented, she shies away from the limelight. She is more invested in taking care of her sick niece and avoiding the cutthroat classical world. Drawn together, the two women agree to a temporary arrangement while touring. As they grow closer, Virve finds herself tempted to give up the very control she has consistently craved for Sabina who is also wondering if a more permanent arrangement with the conductor is a risk worth taking.

Riot Recommendations

Another thing that has been bringing me joy, even though it is a once a month thing, is the symphony. A friend won me a season’s pass to the one of the local ones last year and I’m honestly thinking of treating myself to one for the 2023-2024 season because I have enjoyed all the performances I’ve made it to.

I’ve also been reading a lot of books that are related to classical instruments, specifically Light From Uncommon Stars and The Violin Conspiracy. That, plus the lifelong and recently reignited love of classical music is what lead to today’s themes, which include a heroine or hero who plays a classical instrument.

A Passion for Pleasure by Nina Lane

When renowned rake and pianist Sebastian’s father’s decrees he needs to follow his brother’s footsteps and settle down, he is unsure of where to find a good candidate. As luck would have it, that is exactly when Clara, a former student who has always carried a torch for him, comes back into his life. The two enter into a marriage of convenience for their own personal gain but soon find themselves unable to deny that there is an attraction building between them that they will soon be unable to resist any longer.

A Song of Secrets by Jayci Lee

Angie is desperate to save the music society that she and her sister’s play for and will do anything to make sure it doesn’t die. When she realizes that her ex, Joshua, is the anonymous composer behind the latest piece setting the classical music world aflame, she approaches him and says she’ll keep his secret, provided he composes a piece for her sisterly trio. Despite how their relationship ended, Joshua agrees to this, and as the two begin to spend time together, they remember how good they once were and wonder if it will be worth it to try again.

The second book, One Night Only, is already out and Just a Few Fake Kisses is slated to come out in August. I am very much looking forward to that one since that is all about Chloe, the violist!

He is a bit of a reluctant reader, so when he expressed an interest in going, I tried not to make a big deal about it. The Wolf and the Wildflower by Stacy Reid

All of London is abuzz when James, believed to have been lost at sea, returns. Once home, he has less than a month to take on the mantle of a distinguished gentlemen or risk his family losing their status. Jules is a psychologist that has been living as a male since birth, enjoying the freedom it allows her and how she can pass under the scrutinizing eye of society. Riot Recommendations

The main reason we made a trip to the library was because I needed to return a book. I had intended to just get a book or two for my son but the cover of Can’t Resist Her caught my eye. Since this has been on my want-to-read list for a while, I quickly snatched it up.

Now, it wasn’t the cover alone that made me pick this up since, again, I already wanted to read it. But it did get me to thinking of other books that I picked up purely because their cover caught my eye. We all know what they say about judging a book by its cover but it sure doesn’t hurt to have an eye-catching one!

Grumpy Jake by Melissa Blue

Bailey is the kindergarten teacher for Jake’s son. While she’s looking forward to having him in her class, she is not looking forward to interactions with Jake, who has the nickname of “Jake the Rake.” When Jake discovers Bailey doesn’t think highly of him, he plans on having to avoid Bailey as much as possible. That is until a broken elevator causes the two to get stuck together for a few hours and begin to look at each other through very different eyes. This cover very much gives off art deco vibes to me and I’m here for it.

Mister Romance by Leisa Rayven

When journalist Eden hears of the mysterious ‘Mister Romance,’ she is determined to unmask him for the charlatan she feels he is. After Mister Romance, aka Max, hears about this, he challenges her to give him three dates to get her to fall in love with him. If she does she won’t publish the story but if she doesn’t, then he will have his blessings. As the dates progress, both of them find themselves having to rethink their initial impressions. That brooding look and the suit are what does it for me, y’all.

It’s Monday again which means it is back to work for me, and that is always a mixed bag. I did enjoy my time off and wish it had been longer, as per the norm. I got a lot done reading and writing-wise — I went out and interacted with the outside just enough and, all in all, recharged my batteries. But part of me is also ready to get my Dolly Parton back on and get back to the nine to five.

Montana comes back to her Memphis home and is given the keys to a financially secure future provided she agrees to an arranged marriage. Due to a heartbreak she experienced earlier in her life, she agrees to this, believing her future is set. That is until Orion, the man who broke her heart, comes back into her life, determined to right the wrongs of the past as well as earn the chance to be allowed back into her life and her heart.

A note from the author states this is book one in a three book series so there will likely be a cliffhanger, but also more to come!

In a few short days, March will be here and will hopefully bring with it the wonderful Spring weather. At least for some of y’all. Again, here in Texas, there are really only variations of summer with the occasional glimpse of all other seasons. We reached 90 degrees the other day and I had to turn my AC on.

Anyways, it feels like February came and went in the blink of an eye, at least to me. I’m not sure if you’re feeling the same way or not, but as for me, I feel like I’m still falling behind on all my goals, and not just reading ones. By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be two days into my extra long weekend. Hopefully, I’ll have managed to finish at least book or two in that time. I’ve done pretty well in the last few days, if I do say so myself, especially considering that I have a tendency to get distracted by other books. And that trend likely won’t stop any time soon since The Writing Retreat is calling my name, which means I will likely give into temptation and pick it up soon.

However I also plan on finishing the two romances I have on deck, which are an advanced copy of The Neighbor Favor and Reggie and Delilah’s Year of Falling. I have been working my way through them slowly but surely — wish me luck!

Riot Recommendations

Mardi Gras happened earlier this week and I am sure that was a lot of celebrating was had. I mean for other people — I stayed at home and relaxed since it was the start of my five-day weekend and I really didn’t want to start it off in a sea full of strangers.

As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t care much for crowds before 2020. It’s extreme enough to where I think I have a touch of agoraphobia because even when I go to places I’m excited for, like Renaissance Festivals, at some point I have to break away to be by myself.

Now, I have been to Mardi Gras before but that was when I was in my senior year of high school. True, I probably shouldn’t have been down there since I was only 17, but that was many moons ago and you can’t rewrite time. Moving on! Today’s recommendations are for books that take place in New Orleans since I’m fairly confident that most people equate that city with the celebration. Enjoy!

Zahra thinks her days of espionage are over until one last assignment brings her to New Orleans. There her paths cross with the intriguing Archer of the Le Veq family and has to work extra hard to guard her secrets and heart from the handsome man.

When Eli discovers that someone has been embezzling from his family’s shipping business, he enlists the help of Kate to find out who the culprit is. Kate makes a living after infiltrating companies for this very reason and thinks this case will be no different than her other ones, despite how much charm Eli has. However, he proves to be very tempting leading her to wonder if she can let her guard down around him and take a chance with her heart.

This, to me at least, is still by far one of the funniest adverts that Harlequin has ever done.

Holding Out For A Hero…

This particular Monday I’m especially happy because it is a very short work week for me. As in, I’m only working today and tomorrow. Part of it is due to (still) needing to use my PTO since I’m close to cap. What can I say? I don’t really go anywhere. The other part of it is just feeling like this would be an emotional week. Again, February is a conflict of feelings for me all around; so, it is definitely a month that I take day by day.

One thing bringing me joy recently is that whatever stalemate I was in for reading seems to have been lifted. I think a lot of it had to do with The Spite House getting released earlier this month, as it was one of the books I was most looking forward to this first quarter and y’all…it did not disappoint. It was so good. And it’s a love story of sorts, albeit a paternal love that shows exactly how far a father will go to protect his children. So good. Highly recommend.

Riot Recommendations

Following up on the theme from last week, today’s recommendations are romance novels where the hero’s name is in the title. Since I did heroines last week, it seemed only fitting and fair to focus on heroes this week.

One thing that stuck out to me searching for these books is that these types of book seem to be primarily present in contemporary titles only, whereas heroines seem to feature primarily in historical romances. I’m not sure why that is, but it is a pattern I discovered.

Now, that said, I’m sure I could find some titles that contradict that theory and I may do that in the future in an even deeper dive. For now though, we’ll go ahead and focus on the books I have for you today based on this theme.

Rafe by Rebekah Weatherspoon

When Dr. Sloan is unexpectedly left with no childcare for her twins, she is left in a position where she needs to find someone capable, competent and most important, caring, for her girls. “Bookish” Names and New World Love

Y’all, I really felt the love last weekend. As planned, I went to the Pflugerville Community Library’s 15th Annual Romance Social. Unbeknownst to me was the fact that some of the wonderful librarians there were also newsletter subscribers. When I arrived Meg, the librarian behind the event planning, had an entire swag bag waiting for me full of bookish goodies. My heart was so full at this unexpected gesture. I was excited at the prospect of in-person crafting, new books, and listening to a panel of talented romance writers talk about their stories and craft alone. But to get extra gifts was just a most welcome surprise!

The authors this year were M.L Eaden, Kelly Cain, Vivien Jackson and Becky Wade. I had to limit myself to just two books, because I am booking on a budget. The ones I got were The Saint George Chronicles and Tastes So Sweet by Kelly Cain. Be sure to check all those authors out since they each cover a different sub-genre in romance. Chances are y’all become a fan of at least one!

Riot Recommendations

As I was trying to come up with a theme for today’s recommendations, my gaze fell on the stack of books that I’m currently reading and was drawn to one in particular. In all fairness, all the books on my reading pile are important and ones I want to finish, otherwise I would DNF them (and I do not hesitate to do that). However, one needs to move up priority wise since I have a book club meetup for it soon and I haven’t even gotten past the first page. *grimace*

Luckily for you, my reading procrastination resulted in today’s theme: historical romances that also feature the heroine’s name in the title. And who knows? Maybe I’ll do it for heroes in the near future.

In this second chance romance, Aphrodite bemoans her name since she feels that saddling someone with the name of the goddess of love sets them up for romantic disappointment. This fear proves to be true when the love of her life leaves her for another woman and she retires to the country. When she is guilted by her mother into returning to London for her sister’s debut, she does so begrudgingly only to run into Evander, the man who shattered her heart. Now a widower, Evander is determined to win back Aphrodite’s love even as the hurts of the past threaten to destroy their future.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, y’all! I know that most people think of this as a love it or hate it holiday but I’m fairly ambivalent, which, considering that I write about romance, may be surprising. I mean, I did hate it at one time when I was younger, but I’ve since come to the conclusion that while it may not be for me, that doesn’t mean I should steal other people’s sunshine. Whatever or however you choose to celebrate or not, I hope that it brings you satisfaction.

We’re not doing anything on our end because hubby works. To be fair, neither of us would have ventured out to celebrate anyways because crowds are a real thing. So, while he works, I’ll likely be reading which is probably a good plan since I currently have six in my rotation. I should probably start focusing on getting that whittled down.

In honor for tomorrow, today’s recommendations are going to be Valentine’s related. What can I say? While my own feelings on the holiday may be lukewarm, I still love reading about all holidays and February 14th is no different.

My Nerdy Valentine by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Between earning her degree and holding down two jobs, Amanda has no time for love. When she beings to receive creepy Valentine’s on her desk, she accuses stockbroker William of being the stalker behind the gift. He, of course, is not the culprit, but agrees to help find out who is by doing the only logical thing: posing as her live-in boyfriend. However, the close quarters lead to real feelings and heat developing between the two, all while Amanda’s actual stalker watches and waits.

His Only Valentine by Katrina Jackson

Spy Kenny and Black cam girl Maya are both determined for their first Valentine’s together to be perfect, even when their plans change last minute and they have to fly to Hong Kong to protect a foreign diplomat. During the travel, they begin to realize that the reason their relationship feels so good is because it is actual true love instead of lust, and it’s better than any song, poem, or book could dream up.
