Cozy Small Town Romances

Hey y’all! We’re almost at the end of the work week, which means the weekend is nigh. I’m hoping to get a lot of reading done this weekend along with some writing and relaxing, as per the norm.

I am still working on West Side Love Story and started an eARC copy of Love on the Brain. Speaking of eARCS, I recently went through my email to clear it out and found I had a lot of those waiting for me. So, I did as any other book dragon would do and downloaded them all because I mean…why not?

That said, when you take that stack and add the two BOTM books that just came in, my TBR has pretty much exploded in less than a week. Not that I’m not panicking at the possibility of being overwhelmed with choices of what to pick up next. Not even a little bitty bit…

On that somewhat ominous note, let’s get to the rest of the newsletter.

Reading Lamp by BooksMakeMeBrainy

I’ll be honest in that I’m not sure how effective this would be as a reading lamp, but I still love it. It’s adorable and would make a perfect addition to any bookshelf out there. Plus, as we’ve gone over, I love a good snarky pun. $22 without lightbulb or $34 with lightbulb.

Riot Recommendations

Between the announcement of the Clover Hill novellas (see more below) and Somebody Somewhere being released this week, small town romances were on my mind this week. While I am all for the city life, there is something to be said about the draw of a small town and the simplicity of it. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not without its drawbacks but then again, that’s life in general, no matter where you live. It’s all about what you need in that season of your life.

And in this season I need some small town romances!!

cover of Part of Your World

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez

When Alexis winds up stranded in a ditch, Daniel is the handsome young man who helps her out of her predicament which results in her first one-night stand. However, both of them feel the draw back to each other which results in a sweet affair starting up, which all may end up crashing when their two worlds collide. Typically, I try to focus on backlists for the recommendations but I couldn’t pass on a chance to recommend this delightful read since it was one of my favorites this year.

cover of Not the Marrying Kind

Not the Marrying Kind by Jae

When the small town of Fair Oaks is set to host its first lesbian wedding, florist Ashely and baker Sasha are hired to help make sure it runs smoothly. As the women work closely together, the attraction between them brews until they’re forced to admit that they have more than just a business relationship. Even though I wasn’t the little girl who had her whole wedding planned out from a young age, and actually find them to be stressful and overpriced as all get out, I am a sucker for romance novels that center around the planning of a wedding. I have no clue why, I just roll with it at this point.

Speaking of weddings, I was moved by this story of a couple who managed a wedding without blowing their bank account. No shame if you want a super expensive wedding but also don’t hate on those that want to be more frugal.

It was pretty much over once it began, but you may have heard of some controversy surrounding a call for submissions for a Gothic Romance anthology which seemed to boil down people being mad that some of the requirements were naturally an HEA and no incest, which is an interesting hill to die on for sure.

And in case you’re curious about the difference between a Gothic novel and a Gothic Romance novel, there’s a good introduction to the subgenre here as well more on why this blow up was confusing.

Also, there’s much excitement to be had for this new series of inclusive romance novellas.

I love this interview that NPR did with Beverly Jenkins and Courtney Milan.

This TikTok from The Ripped Bodice speaks to my soul, especially considering what I shared in my intro.

Check out this list of celebrity romances.

And that’s it for this week my friends. I hope y’all have an awesome weekend. If you need a little more of me in the meantime, then you can give me a follow over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until Monday, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Grumpy/Sunshine is Always a Perfect Balance

Hello and Happy Monday to you. I hope that whatever time of day you’re reading this finds you well. Over here, we’re enjoying the last week of freedom before back to school, which is a bit nerve wracking for me this year. Even though I’m confident he will take it by storm, I’m not ready for that world just yet. It is so weird to think that we’re already there. Still, I’ll try to keep a positive outlook for him so I can be the support system he needs to navigate those waters.

On another note, today is Happiness Happens Day, which, if I’m being honest, sounds a bit aggressively cheerful. Totally agree with the intention behind it, since it’s essentially you don’t always need a reason to be happy but still…

In other news, tomorrow is Book Lover’s Day which I know we can all get down with.

Spicy Books Mug by MidnightDoorStudio

I love the subtle yet firm message that this mug delivers. And the art work is just delightful to me. Do I need another coffee mug? No. But to be fair, I also don’t need more books…but that’s not going to stop me from buying or wanting to buy more. And this is one that combines two of my loves into one glorious, caffeinated beverage holder. $16

Riot Recommendations

Since it’s Happiness Happens Day, I decided today’s recommendations should feature the grumpy/sunshine trope. This is one of the more popular ones out there and I think a good portion of that is due to it being applicable in almost every type of relationship. Think about your friends and family members; chances are that dynamic may be present, with the close ones, especially.

As someone who is not ashamed to admit that, more times than not, they’re the “grumpy” factor, I feel this to be very true. And that’s okay because my “sunshine” friends still love me and, for them especially, I can easily swap sides if the situation calls for it.

With that said, here are the recommendations for today.

cover of A Kiss for Midwinter

A Kiss for Midwinter by Courtney Milan

I’ll admit I’m even more of a sucker for the grumpy/sunshine dynamic during the winter holidays and this one is no exception. Lydia and Jonas are perfectly balanced out here with his pragmatic and somewhat sarcastic nature acting as a foil to her optimistic one. It’s just delightful.

cover of Always Only You

Always On You by Chloe Liese

Ren is a hockey player who finds himself attracted to Frankie, one of the staff members on his team. And, despite her tough exterior, Frankie isn’t exactly unaffected by Ren but works hard to keep him at arm’s length. I really love books where the grumpy person is the FMC as opposed to the MMC since that is the default for some reason. This could be because, as stated above, I am Grumpy in mine but who knows? Either way, sign me up!

The latest Trope Tuesday from Love’s Sweet Arrow is all about finding love a conventions.

Also, I’m really happy to see that The Ripped Bodice’s June’s Pride display is now a permanent fixture.

Take this fun back to school quiz to get your soul mate’s first initial.

This list proves that when it comes to love, age isn’t anything but a number; provided, of course, that both parties are consenting adults.

Slow Burns, Summer Romances, and Cover Reveals

I know I sound like a broken record, but I seriously can’t believe summer is almost over. Part of me is dealing with regrets of trips not taken. Then the other part remembers that this summer has included record breaking temperatures and don’t feel too bad, especially since the teenager still got to go to camp.

In fact, most of this upcoming Saturday will be spent picking him up from it which means another day of being in a car for over 6 hours. So, I am predicting a lot of my Sunday will be spent in jammies doing absolutely nothing, except maybe my laundry since his will be done the minute we get home because I’m under no illusions about the state those clothes will be in after a week at an outdoor camp.

I finished No Rings Attached and started reading West Side Love Story. The English Major in me really appreciated that Oliveras opened with a spin on the prologue from the play. Tiny bit of me trivia: I had to memorize that for my English class in high school and still remember it word for word. I also remember Puck’s closing monologue from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, due to having played that role in high school theater.

Enough dilly-dallying, on to the newsletter!

Slow Burn trope Sticker by BookishVibesDesignCo

I have recently discovered I’m a fan of a good slow burn in my romances. And it doesn’t matter if we get to read what happens when it stops being slow or if the sex ends up being off the pages after the build up. Of course, I’m honest enough to admit that prefer to read all about it but I also have love for books, and readers, who prefer it off the pages. $3

Riot Recommendations

Today’s recommendations are all about summer or rather the end of it, since that is the position that I am currently in at the moment.

cover of like lovers do

Like Lovers Do by Tracey Livesay

Even though I’ve never been there for multiple reasons, Martha’s Vineyard to me always screams end of summer. I’m chalking it up to how often it is used in pop culture for those types of books and movies. In Like Lovers Do, you get all that plus a roommate/fake dating situation with enough repressed feelings, akin to a slow burn actually, to practically sizzle off the pages. Yes please.

cover of beach read

Beach Read by Emily Henry

So, I know that this book is well known and not under the radar by any stretch of the imagination. But when I say I loved this book, I mean it wholeheartedly. It came to me when I was at the end of three familial losses in a row and so I related so hard to January and her grief. Plus the romance was that slow burn that I like and mentioned above. Also, for whatever reason, I just really appreciated how August always called her by her full name. Not sure why that’s swoon-worthy but I’m rolling with it.

Convenient I Do’s and Second Chances

Happy first of August. This summer seems to have flown by which was something I really thought only happened to kids who didn’t want to go back to school. Turns out the same sometimes applies to adults. Who knew?

Did you also know today is National Girlfriend’s Day? I’m not sure if this means platonic or romantic girlfriends but part of me goes why not both? Whichever one applies to you, get out and celebrate. There doesn’t appear to be a National Boyfriend Day though, which I’ll admit doesn’t seem a bit fair. So I say celebrate them today too!

And tomorrow is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day. With the temps being what they are, I’m sure everyone will want to take part in that one. I’m a big fan of the classic sandwiches but made with a cookies and cream filling.

But Drew is equally as determined to show her that he is a good man all around who cares about more than she thinks.

At least not until they’re thrown together to plan the annual fair and begin to remember what it was that made them fall in love to being with.

Riot Recommendations

I don’t know about y’all, but I had a lot of fun last month with recommendations. Beverly Jenkins and her books are so important to me. She is the first author I personally came in contact with that showed me that romances were truly for everyone, and Black people were more than just background or filler characters.

We’re going back to tropes for a bit with recommendations and today’s theme is Marriage of Convenience. I know that these happened a lot in historical romances since that is when a lot of them happened in real life. But it is still a theme that is pretty popular in contemporary romances, and they tend to be a little more diverse. I mean, don’t get me wrong, more work can still be done but they are miles ahead of their historical counterparts.

With that said, let’s get to the recs!

cover of Xeni: A Marriage of Inconvenience by Rebekah Weatherspoon

Xeni by Rebekah Weatherspoon

I love a good elderly matchmaker, both in this and the other side of the veil. Xeni and Mason have to get married in order to get the assets that were left to them from Xeni’s Aunt Sable. Plus it’s a Weatherspoon, so you know you’re in for a lotta laughs and steamy scenes.

picture of Married for Christmas cover

Married for Christmas by Noelle Adams

In this holiday novel, friends Daniel and Jessica get married to help make the widowed Daniel look more like a “suitable minister” and give Jessica the opportunity for a husband and children. I know the premise may seem iffy but it’s fairly entertaining and Daniel is definitely in the “Hot Minister” category.

August 20th is Bookstore Romance Day and a lot of events are being announced. One of the ones I’m most excited for is this History in Color Panel. Be sure to also check your local indie to see what things they may have planned. I know that there are a lot of independent stores out there that shun romance, but there are just as many that look forward to this day just as much as us.

Considering, you know, everything going on right now, I really appreciated these week’s recommendations for Magical Realism romance from Love’s Sweet Arrow.

More romance novel covers on rocks!

Take this fun quiz to see if you would be perfect match for Chris Evans.

You’ll Always Remember Your First

If you’re reading this, guess what? You’re thisclose to the end of the work week and July and have the weekend to look forward to. I’m not sure what y’all may have planned but I hope that it is relaxing. Last weekend for me was a nice mix of fun and responsibility what with having to get two new tires since one was in very bad shape. But I also got to try a new restaurant, go shopping, and spend time with loved ones.

This coming weekend, I will be dropping the teenager off at week-long camp. While I will miss him, I will enjoy the quiet because he’s got a lot of energy and the only time he’s silent is when he’s asleep. I’m hoping to get a lot of work done as well as taking some much needed ‘me’ time.

I also finished my advanced copy of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and can’t wait for it to come out so you too can share in the warm joy that this book is.

This last weekend, my spouse was looking for a bookmark and when I asked if he wanted to borrow one, he replied to me in a loving yet sarcastic way if I had one to spare. Because, in addition to books, I also hoard bookmarks. There shan’t be any dog-earring in this house.

That is why these bookmarks caught my eye when I was looking for today’s bookish goods. Not only is the art amazing and diverse but I love every single one of the tropes. Which is my way of saying these may be finding a home with me very soon. $12

Riot Recommendations

As we near the end of July, I figured the last recommendation for this month would combine both #JenkinsJuly and Christmas in July, with an added bonus one thrown in for funsies. I’ve been a huge romance reader for more than half my life which means I have read a lot. And while I don’t really remember ever single romance I’ve ever read, there are some that will forever stick out in my mind. In this case, these are my first romance reads in some way shape or form and for that they will always have a special place in my heart.

picture of Emma and the Outlaw cover

Emma and the Outlaw by Linda Lael Miller

I’m starting with the very first adult romance novel I ever remember reading. Whether or not this was appropriate since, to me at least, Miller was especially spicy for that time, is both debatable and irrelevant. After all, you can’t go back in time. The original cover drew me in and I remember being both shocked by what I read and intrigued. And, as they say the rest was history.

cover of Indigo

Indigo by Beverly Jenkins

I’ve talked endlessly about how this was my first Jenkins book so it will forever be my favorite. And, yes, I had *this* edition of the book and I have no idea what happened to it. Considering how many times my dad and sister read it as well, it’s quite possible that it literally fell apart since that happened a few times in our bibliophile household. But I love this story of Hester and Galen and swoon every time.

Cover of Merry Inkmas

Merry Inkmas by Talia Hibbert

Talia is also an author I fangirl over and this was the introduction to her world. I loved the sweet romance between Bailey and Cash and how it developed. I also fell in love with Talia’s way of writing which is why she is one of the authors on my auto-buy list.

The cover reveal for Alexandria Bellefleur’s next release was announced and to say I am excited would be an understatement.

Speaking of cover reveals, the one for Talia Hibbert’s YA romance, Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute, now shows up on Goodreads!

Check out this video from Harlequin featuring the amazing Brenda Jackson, talking about her two latest releases.

Embrace Your Happiness

Welcome (back) to Kissing Books and happy Monday. Last week was a little rough for me for many reasons so, as a treat to myself, I decided to take Friday off for a three-day weekend and spent some time with the teenager. With everything going the way it has been and us still being expected to “adult” while desperately trying to keep it together, it is important to remember to take that time off if you can afford to and recharge. I know we’re all looking to lift each other up during these trying times, and that’s great. But if you’re running on “E” yourself, you won’t be efficient at it.

In things making me happy right now: this mentality. I work from home so, most days, only the people who are here see it when I put on make-up. But it makes me feel good, regardless of whether I’m being a glitter goddess or channeling my Goth-ness. If there is something that does this for you, be sure to do it since you’d be surprised at the ego boost something small like that can give.

This is a simple yet true statement. There have been many a day where getting a brand new book from a favorite author, physical or digital, has turned my day around, especially if it is something I had forgotten about. Riot Recommendations

Following the theme of happiness, I’m going to recommend a few books that highlight one of my favorite tropes: enemies-to-lovers. I know there has been a lot of discourse on whether or not this is an accurate description of the trope but it’s what I’ve always called it, so I’m sticking to it.

Now I’ve been a big fan of this trope and I never knew why until Living Single started streaming and I saw the dynamic between Maxine and Kyle. And, like many things that I go back to as an adult, it’s like a big lightbulb flickered on in my brain. So, I fully embrace this trope in all its various forms.

cover of Vivid

Vivid by Beverly Jenkins

I love it when my romance novels feature strong and smart women and this book sure has that in Dr. Viveca. The “enemy” is in the form of Mayor Nate, who was expecting a male doctor and isn’t as welcoming as he should have been. He quickly realizes his mistakes though and works endlessly on trying to convince Viveca to give him a second chance.

Speaking of Beverly Jenkins, put this on your calendar now so you don’t miss out!

This is great read as we near the end of #JenkinsJuly and anniversary of 1994’s Black Summer of Love.

Love’s Sweet Arrow latest Trope Tuesday recommendations is Found Family, which is always heart-warming.

Here are some Sapphic historical romances for your consideration.

Magnetic Bookmarks, Romantic Suspense and Romance Panels

We did it, y’all! We made it through another week and now have the weekend to look forward to. Hopefully you made it through unscathed. I am also putting that hope out there for me since, as of the writing of this newsletter, I am dealing with what feels like severe and vey painful neck strain. Now, I can move my head from side to side, which is nice; but, I can’t do it too fast otherwise the pain will be excruciating. Such is life though!

I’m still working my way through an eARC of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches as well as my copy of No Rings Attached and both are delightful.

I love magnetic bookmarks since I think they help to keep your place better. I still remember that brief period of time when my then toddler son would purposefully remove the bookmarks from what I was reading. And I knew it was on purpose because he would laugh and run away when he did it.

Then there was the time I was staying with a friend and left a book in the living room and her cat waited until I was walking out, looked me dead in the eye, and then used a paw to bat at the ribbon and make me lose my place. Rude.

If you’re also a fan of these types of bookmarks and love to advertise your favorite genre, then these would be a perfect addition to your collection. $6

Riot Recommendations

Today’s recommendations include two contemporary romantic suspense novels from two very big names in the Black romance world who happen to share the same initials. Of course, one is Beverly Jenkins, keeping with the celebration of #JenkinsJuly and, if you’re well-read in Black romances, you’ve probably guessed the other is Brenda Jackson.

What I love about these two women is not only are they both hella talented but they’re also both hella classy. We all know the book world is not without drama and will try to create it if it doesn’t grow on its own. So, when you have two women writing in the same field with the same initials? Most gossip hounds would froth at the mouth at the prospect of trying to stir that pot.

But these two were like “Naw…there’s room at this table for both of us” and work(ed) to uplift not just one another, but also other up and coming Black voices. I love it and, even if there weren’t a multitude of other reasons, they would be beyond inspirational for that one alone.

cover of The Edge of Midnight

The Edge of Midnight by Beverly Jenkins

This one has it all: a diamond smuggling scheme, a woman who let herself get drawn into said plot, and the government agent she accidentally shoots when trying to get away. It’s perfect for fans of this type of suspense action with a lot of banter thrown into the mix and was Jenkins’ first foray into this sub-genre of romance.

cover of Entangled Pursuits

Entangled Pursuits by Brenda Jackson

Four years after their steamy affair ended, Detectives Andrew and Antonia, aka Toni, find themselves assigned as each other’s partner for a new homicide case. They try to keep the sexual tension out of their jobs but when Toni’s life is in danger, Andrew can no longer ignore the fact that he’s in love with her. Second chance romance with a thread of a suspense? Yes, please.

I cannot describe how much I *love* that there will be a Romance Panel at this year’s SDCC.

Also happening this Friday is a discussion with Erica Ridley and Tessa Dare at The Ripped Bodice about the former’s latest release, Nobody’s Princess.

This list of must-read romances that have been or will be released this summer is gonna be bad for your checkbook. You’ve been warned and you’re welcome.

Pins, Scavenger Hunts, and Trips Abroad

Hey y’all and welcome back. I know that the world is a dumpster fire right now and that won’t change soon. And while I tend to be a ‘glass half empty’ person, I also recognize that you need to take the time to find joy, even in small things. So, in the spirit of that, I’m going to drop some random facts here that may make you smile.

For starters, July 18th is National Sour Candy Day. Now, yes, it’s “unofficial.” But still, how fun is that? So, go on and get your sour candy fix on today. After all, you’re just observing the holiday right?

Also, rainbows at night, while rare, do happen and are called moonbows.

Hopefully those helped to start your day off on the right foot or perk you up! Now on to the rest of the newsletter.

Romance Books Stack Hard Enamel Pin by ProcrastiplannerEtc

One of the gifts I recently got myself was a pin to display all of my pins. And y’all, I love it so much! It’s a great way to let someone get a brief glimpse into the chaos that is my personality and brain. So, naturally, I’m on the hunt for more pins like this beautiful gem right here. It’s simple but says so much about a romance reader’s preferences that everyone should get one. $5.50

cover of Genuine Imitation

Riot Recommendations

We’re keeping with the theme of honoring 1994’s Black Summer of Love with today’s recommendations. They both feature Black romance authors who got their start around that time. Now, this does include Ms. Bev because it’s also #JenkinsJuly, as she is so worthy of a month of celebration.

They’re also all short stories as opposed to full length novels. I love a good novel, don’t get me wrong, but every now and then a short story collection is just up my alley because I can read it in small doses. Even novellas are nice since they can be read in a couple of hours. So, if you’re like me and looking for stories like that, here are some candidates for your consideration.

cover of Island for Two

Island for Two by Beverly Jenkins and Elaine Overtone

I don’t know about y’all, but reading about island getaways and finding love sounds just peachy keen right now. From a plane crash in Hawaii to a Fiji island fling that soon develops into more, these may just be what you need for a getaway from the comfort of your own home. Don’t forget a daquiri!

cover of Rosie's Curl and Weave

Rosie’s Curl and Weave by Rochelle Alers, Donna Hill, Felicia Mason, and Francis Ray

I remember reading this book when I was in high school and enjoying it. So, I was super happy when it was reissued. There are four love stories here, all centered around the neighborhood salon, featuring very different women at different places in their lives. One thing they have in common though? They’re all about to find love very soon!

Frolic’s Monthly Book Crush for July is The Sizzle Paradox by Lily Menon!

Here are some romances to bring some thrills to your summer.

And, if you want, you can turn the heat up even more with some of the books named here.

Read a short passage and possibly get hooked on a new romance novel.

Keep Cool and Stay Indoors

Hello, friends, and welcome back. I know I say this every week but, with the record high temperatures everywhere, I sincerely hope you’re doing well. We’re reaching record breaking temperatures in my state that we haven’t seen since the early 20th century and it’s unbearable. And, again, it’s not even mid-July which means it’s not going to stop anytime soon. So, please try to stay inside, unless you absolutely have to go into the out. And if you do have to venture outdoors, be sure to drink water on the regular.

In reading news, I’m still working through The Very Secret Society Irregular Witches and I’m likely going to break my self-imposed rule of reading a max of three books at once to start No Rings Attached very soon.

Wine Tarot T-Shirt by DentzDenim

I’ve mentioned before I’m a fan of Tarot cards and the various art styles. I’m also a fan of wine, especially red wine. So, this shirt is right up my alley. Plus it’s a tank top which means that you don’t have to worry about the T-shirt tan if you have to be out and about. Heads up though; it only comes in white so be mindful of the red wine stains. $27

Riot Recommendations

I’m keeping up with the Christmas in July theme for today’s recommendations. I gotta say, the cooler weather would be much appreciated right now. Don’t be mistaken; I’m well aware that cold weather can be just as dangerous as the heat, since I very much remember February of 2021 in the South and the unprecedented blizzard we experienced. So, while I want it, I also want it safely.

Getting back on track, here are the recommendations for this week to hopefully help everyone get into a cool frame of mind while maintaining the warmish glow that romance novels can inspire in us. Also, as these are all novellas, y’all will get a bonus recommendation today!

cover of Homecoming

Homecoming by Beverly Jenkins

It’s 1883, and Lydia is on her way home for the holidays. Along the way, she runs into Gray, a man she pined for when she was younger but parted ways with. Gray, a solider, is also on the way home and the two decide to make their way home together, wondering if this is their second chance at true love. I’m a sucker for second chance romances, especially ones where a considerable amount of time has passed since it gives both parties a chance to grow up a bit more. Plus, it’s a Jenkins so you know it’s going to be amazing.

cover of The Viscount's Tempting Minx

The Viscount’s Tempting Minx by Erica Ridley

I read this novella a few years ago, when it was still under its previous name, The Viscount’s Christmas Temptation, to try to meet my Goodreads goal by the end of the year. Don’t judge me, we’ve all done it before. Anyways, I remember being delighted at the grumpy Benedict’s world being thrown into chaos when sunshiney Amelia refuses to let a little thing like a venue being destroyed derail his family’s annual Christmas celebration.

cover of Booked for Christmas

Booked for Christmas by Lily Menon

It’s romance novelist’s Sophia nightmare come true when her harshest critic Wolfe comes to her holiday party as someone else’s plus one. This bad luck seems to be doubled down on when both find themselves stranded alone when a blizzard blows in. Forced proximities are popular for winter-themed stories, likely due to the weather outside being frightful. But, it’s also a perfect time for romance as evidenced in this delightful tale.

It’s Cancer season! Happy birthday to all my fellow crabs out there and be sure to check out this list of romances that may speak to your Cancerian soul.

Yay, it’s #JenkinsJuly!

Well, we’re at the start of another week and things are still ‘meh’ at best. And I’m being generous there with my description.

On a positive note though, it’s #JenkinsJuly as well as the anniversary of 1994’s Black Summer of Love that saw the launch of the sadly now defunct Arabesque publishing line. A lot of prolific Black romance authors got their start there and one of the things I plan to do this month is to highlight them in a few ways. So stay tuned for that.

In other things bringing me joy, I have been jamming out to Halestorm’s Back From the Dead. Gotta love an awesome rock band with a strong female lead. Plus Lizzy’s voice is FIRE!

This is my reading blanket picture

Read Me Romance: This is My Reading Blanket by SouthernSunDesigns

Look, I know that for most of us, it’s hotter than the devil’s undercarriage right now. So, blankets may not be on the brain. However, I maintain that winter is coming in a few months and that most people keep it polar bear chilly in their house before of the aforementioned heat. Thus, a reading blanket is always a welcome addition and you can let everyone know that it’s yours. Also comes in white and light gray. $40

New Releases

cover of The Romance Recipe

The Romance Recipe by Ruby Barrett

This follow up to the author’s debut, Hot Copy, is focused on Amy, Wes’s sister, who is a chef and owner of a struggling restaurant. Her love interest is celebrity chef, Sophie, who doesn’t like life in the spotlight and just wants to focus on cooking. When an opportunity to appear on a reality show appears to them, they take it, despite Sophie’s reservations. What neither plan on is how hard it will be to keep their attraction off the cameras, especially when they find that they keep on giving into temptation.

As an aside, I read an advanced copy of this and loved it. So excited that others will soon be able to experience this book too.

cover of Figure of Speech

Figure of Speech by Kasha Thompson

This political romance, which is *not* an across the aisle one, features White House Press Secretary Clover who is trying to keep her career on path. However, she keeps getting distracted by the very charismatic and single President Theodore. As determined as she is to not give into the attraction, he is equally determined to get her to not be so rigid in her work and love life.

Riot Recommendations

Along with #JenkinsJuly, one thing that Romancelandia observes on the regular is Christmas in July. Honestly, I don’t get why July. I would think if we did a half Christmas celebration it would be in June. And I’m not just saying that because it’s my birthday month; it’s also because June is the sixth month and December is the twelfth.

Either way, that leads to today’s recommendations, which are holiday related. Cause, despite my tendency towards being more of a Grinch, I do love a good holiday romance, any time of the year.

cover of This Christmas Rivalry

This Christmas Rivalry by Beverly Jenkins

In this novella, Tasha inherits her grandfather’s football team, much to the dismay of General Manager Drew. The two manage to work together well enough, since they are both passionate about football and are sure they can have a civil working relationship. If only that darned attraction didn’t keep popping up… I’m not a big football fan but I am a Jenkins fan so this is right up my alley.

cover of Sweet on You

Sweet On You by Carla de Guzaman

A food civil war breaks out between barista and café owner Sari and her baker neighbor Gabe when he starts making coffee in an attempt to steal her customer’s away. As the feud builds up so does the sexual tension. I mentioned last week I love foodie romances. Throw in an enemies to lovers set up and I’m there.

Honey & Spice is this month’s selection for Reese Witherspoon’s book club!

As mentioned earlier, July is huge in Black romance history. Check out this Twitter thread for a quick rundown.
