Book Riot Recommends

Hi, welcome to everyone’s favorite segment of Book Radar called Book Riot Recommends. This is where I’ll talk to you about all the books I’m reading, the books I’m loving, and the books I can’t wait to read and love in the near future. I think you’re going to love them too!

Can’t Wait for This One!

the future book cover

The Future by Naomi Alderman (Simon & Schuster, November 7)

With the series adaptation of The Power out now on Amazon Prime Video, I feel like a lot of people have been wondering what author Naomi Alderman would come out with next. And well…here it is! And yes, it’s a dystopian novel entitled The Future, which seems like such an obvious title for a dystopian story that I’m wondering why no one has ever used it before. Either way, fans of The Power are going to want to get this one when it comes out in November. Never read The Power? Well, you’re still going to want this one.

In The Future, the world is run by a handful of billionaires who have a huge percentage of the world’s wealth. And when I say they control everything, I mean they control everything, from weapons to weather. But for a small group of friends, these rich people are not going to hold dominion over everything in the world without a fight. The five friends are “the daughter of a cult leader, a non-binary hacker, an ousted Silicon Valley visionary, the concerned wife of a dangerous CEO, and an internet-famous survivalist.” This might end up being the biggest heist of their lives — if they can get away with it.

The Future is a tense and exciting new dystopian novel that eerily reflects our near future. It’s a book that’s somehow frightening and uplifting at the same time, and it’s a must-read when it comes out later this year.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“It was a belated realization to have, but it occurred to me that perhaps this was how grown-up conversations worked—not that your communication didn’t falter, but that you both made good-faith attempts to rectify things after it had.”

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

If you’re anything like me, you love a book that will make you cry. If you think that’s weird, just move along.

Okay, now that it’s just us weepy people here, hi. How’s it going? A Clockwork Reader, one of my fave BookTubers, just released a new video featuring 7 sad books that will (probably) make you cry. And if this type of vid is your cup of tea, go back and watch “I read 5 of the saddest books to see if they would make me cry.” This is the type of quality YouTube content that really speaks to us sad folks.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

sleeping orange cat in the window

Okay, it’s Seattle, but every now and then the sun comes out. And when it does, you’d better believe these cats are basking in those sunbeams. Here’s Murray getting his nap on in the sun.

Oooh…caffeine crash happening now. What I wouldn’t give for a nap.

So on that note, let me let y’all go. I’ll be back with more book stuff for you on Monday. See you then!

Jesse Q. Sutanto Writing YA Romcom About Gaming and More Book Radar!

Hi Book Fam!

How are ya? I have to tell you my big news. My husband and I just celebrated our five year anniversary this past Friday, and yep, we’re still going strong. Allow me a moment to get sappy before I move on to the book things. Sometimes life is stressful. Sometimes I’m unsure of myself. Sometimes I wonder if I’ve made the right life choices. But one thing that grounds me and makes me feel secure? My relationship with my husband. I feel so supported, and I know that whatever adventures we have ahead of us, we’re in it together. And that feels amazing. So anyway. Thanks for giving me the platform to say that. And moving on, let’s talk books.

everything is fine book cover

Everything is Fine by Mike Birchall (WEBTOON Unscrolled, May 16)

So you know this year is the year I’m getting into more graphic novels, and this is a new one I think people are going to be really excited about. Especially because it’s a dystopian horror novel with a cute/disturbing cover. And because it’s a brand new graphic novel from a brand new imprint from Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group (distributed by Macmillan). So yeah, lots of new and exciting stuff happening here. And you’ll want to prepare your shelves, because the first volume is out in May, and round two of this one is going to be coming out later this year.

Sam and Maggie are a totally normal couple who live with their dog Winston in just your average suburban neighborhood. Everyone here is pretty much the same. The houses are the same. The people act and talk the same. Nothing to see here. Right?

Wrong. Sam and Maggie’s dog Winston has been dead for some time, and the two feel that they are under constant surveillance, under constant pressure to make the right decisions and do the right things. One wrong move and who knows what horrible thing could happen. When everything is no longer fine, what happens next?

the deep sky book cover

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei (Flatiron Books, July 28)

You like sci-fi? Thrillers? Mystery? Space adventure? Why not all of that together all in one book? That’s what you’re going to get with Yume Kitasei’s debut novel The Deep Sky. It’s out in July, but I already can’t wait!

The Earth is on the verge of an environmental collapse. In a desperate attempt to save humanity, 80 people — elite graduates of a competitive program — have been sent to space to keep the human race going. In deep space, they are expected to give birth to a new generation. They are humanity’s only hope.

But everything goes awry when a bomb kills three of the crew and knocks the ship off course. There is only one surviving witness: Asuka, the one who was picked last to join the program and the one who struggled most with training leading up to the mission. Immediately, Asuka becomes a prime suspect. Now, as the crew begins to turn on each other, Asuka must figure out who is really responsible for the bombing. Their entire mission may depend on it.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“‘What I don’t understand,’ said Gaspar, realizing this was a moment when he could talk to his dad, something that had been impossible for months, ‘is why the sky is dark at night, when with all those stars there should be more light.’

‘There’s even a term for that: someone’s paradox, I can’t remember the guy’s name. You’re asking a question that still doesn’t have an answer, I think. Or maybe they’ve discovered it and I don’t know about it. There’s something called dark matter and it pushes on the stars, that’s why they get farther and farther away. Three-quarters of the universe is darkness. There’s much more darkness than light above us.'”

Here’s an interesting conversation that happened on social media recently: if you get an advanced reader’s copy (ARC) of a book and you don’t read and review it, are you committing theft?!?! Our fave Jess Owens breaks it down on Book CommuniTEA.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

tuxedo cap on lap of a person who is yes still in her pajamas

I don’t normally share pictures with me in them, but I had to share this special moment I had with Remy today. He’s still only a year old, so stillness isn’t really his forte. But as he’s starting to get older, we are getting some lap cat moments. And I just want to celebrate them when they happen. I can’t wait to see how this baby kitten grows into a cuddly, snuggly cat. He’s the best.

And with that, let me wish you a great weekend before we go our separate ways until next week. Remember to cuddle cats (or dogs if that’s your thing). And read some good books!

this delicious death book cover

This Delicious Death by Kayla Cottingham (Sourcebooks, April 25)

I don’t know about you, but April has got me in the mood for some sapphic horror. Okay, who am I kidding? Every month of the year, I’m in the mood for sapphic horror. But Kayla Cottingham, author of My Dearest Darkest, has got a new one out this month that is particularly exciting.

This book is set two years after a portion of the population underwent a transformation known as “the Hollowing.” Those who were affected, now called “the hollow people” (I know, rude) can now only survive by consuming human flesh. To combat this disease, scientists created Synflesh, synthetic human meat which is meant to satisfy the hollow people’s hunger.

Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine are four hollow girls just looking to have a little fun before graduation. When they head to a music festival with a cooler filled with seltzer, vodka, and Synflesh, all they want is a good time. But on the first night of the festival, Val goes feral and kills one of the band members. And as festival guests start dying all around them, the girls realize someone is targeting their kind.

We love to see authors supporting authors on social media. Afer author Suzanne Young shared a picture of a room full of empty chairs at a Barnes & Noble book signing event last week, authors came out of the woodwork to show their support. Young’s post has since gone viral. The author, who was promoting her new novel In Nightfall, called her empty book signing a “career low point” and said that she was “crying the entire way home.” But authors, including Neil Gaiman, have taken to social media to share their similar experiences. Young says she has been overwhelmed by the responses. The author tweeted, “Genuinely, I didn’t know how common this was until now. But this outpouring of support has been incredible.”

I was living for all of the ’90s references. Now we’ve got Throwback by Maurene Goo coming out in just a little over a week, and it’s going to be magical for us ’90s lovers. And it’s got Back to the Future vibes? Let’s do this.

Samantha Kang and her mother Priscilla have never seen eye-to-eye. After one particularly intense fight between mother and daughter, something unexpected happens. Samantha is transported back in time to the ’90s, where a 17-year-old version of her mother goes to the same high school as her. How will Gen Z Samantha fit in with the Gen X high school crowd? And will Samantha be able to figure out how to help her mother so that she can go back to her own time?

I, like the rest of the world, have been following the wild Gwyneth Paltrow skiing trial. Am I proud of it? No. But the memes are epic. And there are even bookish memes!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

I missed Murray so much while I was away. I’m seriously never going to leave home again. I really mean it. How could I leave behind this face and these cuddles?

Those of you who travel and have pets, how do you deal with it? I get so sad every time, and all I can think about is cats.

And with that, Monday’s Book Radar is over! Time flies! See you on Thursday.

Holly Horror by Michelle Jabès Corpora (Penguin Teen, August 14)

If you love YA horror featuring atmospheric, dark gothic houses, creepy dolls, and oh yeah, cats, then this book is for you. And yeah, if you’re seeing the title of this book and thinking “this reminds me of Holly Hobbie,” you’re not wrong! This book is a dark reimagining of the classic character Holly Hobbie. So if you ever enjoyed the Holly Hobbie greeting cards, dolls, or even the TV series, but thought to yourself, “I wish this was horror,” then yes, this book is also for you.

Holly Horror is the story of Evie Archer, who moves to Ravenglass, Massachusetts following her parents’ divorce. All her family needs is a fresh start, but in their new home—known by locals as the Horror House—Evie gets way more than she bargained for. Before Evie’s family moved into the house, it was the home of Holly Hobbie, who disappeared mysteriously out of her bedroom one night. Words of Literary Wisdom

“The mind is a different matter than the body. It’s meant to be sacred, private.”

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

This is old news now, but as of 2022, Tumblr is making a comeback. Like every good millennial, I was on Tumblr back when I was in college. Now I’m thinking it might be time to return and foster a book community there? There are already a bunch of great bookish blogs on Tumblr: bookphile, bookaddict24-7, books-cupcakes, booksarefriends… just to name a few. Are you on Tumblr? What book accounts do you follow? Let me know!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

fluffy cat sleeping with paw out

I’m back home today, but I thought we should look back at the cats we left behind in New Orleans. Here’s Indigo, the other fluffy angel I had the honor of hanging with while i was visiting my friends. Look how cute she is. She is all floof.

And that’s all for Thursday’s Book Radar, friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

tell me what really happened book cover

Tell Me What Really Happened by Chelsea Sedoti (Sourcebooks Fire, April 4)

Let’s talk about what makes this YA mystery/thriller so exciting. It’s the way this story explores truth and perspective. And it’s the way the story is told at a pulse-racing pace, through the first person accounts of four teens all being interviewed by the police.

It all started with a weekend camping trip. Down by Salvation Creek, five teens take a few days to get away from their parents, make s’mores, share secrets…but something goes wrong. Around midnight, one of them vanishes. Now all four of the remaining friends are suspects. And each of them has a different story about what really happened out there in the woods.

Who is lying? Who is hiding secrets? And what really happened to their friend? The clock is ticking, and through these first-person interviews as told to the police, the mystery will begin to unravel. The answers to what really happened that night will surprise you.

the reformatory book cover

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due (Saga, June 27)

American Book Award, NAACP Image Award, and British Fantasy Award-winning author Tananarive Due is back with a new novel this year for the first time in eight years. For that reason alone, before even reading the synopsis of this one, you should add it to your TBR list and your library holds. But if you need even more to get excited for this June release, here’s the deal.

This chilling horror novel is set in Gracetown, Florida, in the summer of 1950. Robert Stephen Jones Jr. is sent to Gracetown School for Boys after kicking a white boy’s leg. Robert thinks he’s just being sent to a reform school, but Gracetown is something much more than that. The school is a segregated school that is haunted from the boys who have died there.

The Reformatory is more than just a scary story. It’s a deeply personal story rooted in real history. Tananarive Due says this novel is inspired by her great-uncle’s incarceration in the Dozier School for Boys in the Florida panhandle. There, Due went missing and was likely killed.

The kitties are at home, but they’re still in my heart. And I know exactly where Cersei is at this very moment. She’s in this little cat bed that Ben got for her. She loves it, and she pretty much never leaves it now. Doesn’t she look cozy?

Well, I’ve been up since 2 a.m., so I’m calling it a night. I will see you next week! Happy reading this weekend <3

Hello and Happy Monday!

Tomorrow is the day I’m leaving town, and I’m bringing quite a few books with me. The flight is long, friends. Lots of reading time. Now the question is, when you’re on a plane, do you go audiobook, physical book, or eBook? For me, I think it might end up being audio. We’ll see. For now, let’s talk books.

Prepare Your Shelves

camp zero book cover

Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling (Atria Books, March 30)

I feel like dystopian novels have been especially difficult over the past, I don’t know, seven years, because it has felt increasingly as if we are living in our own dystopian hell right now. And yet somehow I still love reading them, maybe because it helps my anxious brain to confront the most difficult parts of being alive at this point in history. However you feel about dystopian fiction, or however bleak your outlook is on our current state of affairs, I urge you to give Michelle Min Sterling’s climate change-based dystopian novel a read. And it will be out at the end of the month, so prepare your shelves.

Set in the near future, Camp Zero is the story of an American building project that lies in the far north of Canada. And, yes, it is called Camp Zero. In a desperate effort to help her climate-displaced Korean immigrant mother, Rose travels to Camp Zero to spy on its architect, in the hopes of uncovering the project’s many secrets. In exchange, Rose has been offered free housing. Arriving at the same time as Rose is Grant, who has an agenda of his own. Grant is a college professor with a dark family past that he’s desperate to get as far away from as possible.

As Grant and Rose begin to discover just how disturbing the mysteries of Camp Zero are, rumors begin to fly about a nearby Cold War-era climate research station and a group of women soldiers living and working there. Who are they, who is leading them, and what are they doing there?

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

I’m really going to miss this cutie while I’m out of town, but don’t worry. I’m staying with other cats, so you’ll get pictures of them. Don’t tell Murray though. He thinks he’s the only cat in the world (even though there are two other cats in this house).

And…that’s today’s Book Radar! I hope you had fun. I’ll see you next time.
