Can’t Wait for This One

the invocations book cover

The Invocations by Krystal Sutherland (Nancy Paulsen Books, June 27)

Give me a witchy thriller any time of the year. Why wait for the fall? Summer can be just as witchy, am I right? That’s why I’m so excited for Krystal Sutherland’s YA novel The Invocations, which will be hitting shelves in late June, for all us summer witchy people.

Zara Jones hates feeling powerless. When her sister is murdered by a serial killer, Zara refuses to believe there’s nothing she can do to change it. And so she decides she will do whatever it takes to bring her sister back, even if it means dabbling in the occult. Meanwhile, Jude Wolf is the daughter of a billionaire, but she still has problems of her own. After a deal with a demon goes terribly wrong (as they oft do), Jude is left with a soul that is slowly going necrotic. It’s clear to Jude that if she doesn’t do something to reverse the curse soon, she will surely die.

That’s where daughter of a witch Emer Byrne comes in. Emer has been making a living selling spells to women in desperate situations. But as her clients start getting killed off one-by-one, she knows what it means. Her dark past has finally tracked her down. Now Emer, Jude, and Zara will have to team up to catch this killer, before they become the next targets.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“The way to turn an ex-lover into a friend is to never stop loving them, to know that when one phase of a relationship ends it can transform into something else. It is to acknowledge that love is both a constant and a variable at the same time.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

I’m so obsessed with Tirzah Price’s Reading Log. I use it every year, and I’m so excited she shares it with Book Riot. If you want to use it, all you have to do is click “file” and “make a copy” so that you can have your own that you can edit and fill out. Are you curious about mine? Okay, I’m going to share it with you. Enjoy.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

orange cat and tuxedo cat cuddling

As Remy gets older (he’s a whole year old now!), he is getting much cuddlier, and Murray, being the sweet boy that he is, is so welcoming of the cuddles. We truly love to see it. What’s better than two cats cuddling? Yes, three cats cuddling. But let’s take what we can get.

And that’s the end of the first Book Radar newsletter of 2023! I hope it was as fun for you as it was for me. Talk soon!

Happy almost New Year, friends!

I’m so excited for January and a new year. One of my big reading goals for 2023 is to buy fewer books and spend more time hitting my backlist so that I can stop telling people, “I have that, but I haven’t read it yet.” What are your big reading goals for this year? I’d love to hear about them. Feel free to reach out! In the meantime, let’s look back at the year in books and what’s coming soon!

Best Books of 2022

It’s time to look back at the books that really left an impression on me in this last year. These are my picks for the best books released in 2022. Which ones were your personal favorites? Let me know, and give me more books to add to my TBR in 2023.

cover of The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings

The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings — I loved Gidding’s Lakewood, so I was expecting to enjoy this one. But this was still so surprising. I think what surprised me the most was how funny this one was. I loved it.

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson — Tiffany D. Jackson was on my list last year for White Smoke, and now she’s done it again! This retelling of Stephen King’s Carrie was, dare I say it, even better than the original.

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy — No offense to anyone, but when I pick up a celebrity memoir, it’s more to learn about the author than it is about reading a well-written book. But Jennette McCurdy’s I’m Glad My Mom Died is not just a well-written memoir; it felt like an incredibly important book. I would recommend this one to everyone, even if you’ve never even heard of McCurdy before.

The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes — This YA novel really had all the things: a heart-warming story of a family, a coming-of-age tale of a teen girl becoming more confident in herself and her sexuality, and a really adorable romance.

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey — It’s probably no secret that horror is one of my favorite genres, and this was for sure the scariest horror novel I read this year. Also, if you said you saw that ending coming, you’re lying.

Most Anticipated Books of 2023

And now that we’ve looked back, let’s look ahead. It was hard to narrow this down to just five, but here are five books I cannot wait to read in 2023.

cover of chain gang all stars

Chain Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah — If you’ve read Friday Black, then you’re probably just as excited for Adjei-Brenyah’s debut novel as I am. I think we can expect this to be highly imaginative, maybe a little shocking, and incredibly thought-provoking.

Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez — This is Enriquez’s first novel to be translated into English, and it’s about dang time! I’m already enamored with the world Enriquez has created in her short story collections. I can’t wait to get lost in a full novel.

How to Sell A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix — I can’t believe I’ve gone a full year without a new Grady Hendrix book! The world is hungry for this one, and I’m right there with them.

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert — Somehow I’ve gone this long without reading a Talia Hibbert novel, even though she comes highly recommended. But now that she’s releasing her debut YA novel with Nicola and David Yoon’s imprint Joy Revolution? I’m ready to become a Talia Hibbert reader.

Don’t Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones — This is the sequel to My Heart is a Chainsaw, which I also loved. I’m so excited to return to this story and, most importantly, the protagonist Jade Daniels, who is so beautifully vulnerable and flawed.

What I Loved Watching in 2022

And just for funzies, I thought it would be cool to look back on the TV and movies that really stuck with me in 2022, especially those that are adaptations of books! Of course, I will never forget the final seasons of Atlanta or White Lotus season 2. But in terms of 2022 book adaptations, these were some of my faves:

What I’m Excited to Watch in 2023

Lots of adaptations are coming out in 2023, and probably my most anticipated one of the whole year is M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, based on Paul Tremblay’s novel The Cabin at the End of the World. I am so, so, so pumped for this one! Seems unfair to even put anything else, so I’ll just leave it at that and see how the rest of the year unfolds.

And Here’s a Cat Picture!

a photo of a white and brown cat sleeping in front of bookshelves and a Christmas tree

Is this not the vibe this week, the week between Christmas and the New Year? There’s a sleepy Cersei, there are all the books I’m trying to read in 2023, and there’s our Christmas tree looking on, holding strong.

Well, that was really fun, friends! I’m so excited for the new year, and I hope you are too. Talk soon!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“No matter how bleak or dire, end-of-the-world scenarios appeal to us because we take meaning from the end. Aside from the obvious and well-discussed idea that our narcissism is served when imagining we, out of all the billions who perish, might survive… there’s also undeniable allure to witnessing the beginning of the end and perishing along with everyone and everything else.”

If you’ve been reading Book Radar newsletters fairly regularly, I know you know that I am a huge White Lotus fan. So you know what I really enjoyed? Jack Edwards’ YouTube video exploring the hidden meaning behind all of the books featured in White Lotus season 1 and 2. What a masterpiece! If you love books and you love White Lotus, I think you’ll love Jack’s take on the series through the lens of the books the characters read.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Ah yes, it is in fact snowing, and I have the photographic proof. Murray is so fascinated by the snow. As a Mississippi cat, he is totally baffled by all of this snowy weather. Same, kitty, same. But I love it. And I think he does too.

Alright, friends, and with that, I’m off to get my holiday weekend started. I hope you have a wonderful day, and I will see you a whole week from today, since Monday is a holiday! Until then!

flux book cover

Flux by Jinwoo Chong (Melville House, March 21)

What debut novel can you get excited about in 2023? Flux by Jinwoo Chong. This book explores grief and Asian American identity through a story that mixes elements of neo-noir and science fiction. Think Ling Ma’s Severance meets William Gibson’s Neuromancer. And you’ll be able to grab a copy of it on March 21.

Four days before Christmas, 8-year-old Bo loses his mother in a tragic accident. Elsewhere, 28-year-old Brandon loses his job after a hostile takeover of his big-media employer, and 48-year-old Blue, a key witness in a criminal trial against a tech startup, attempts to reconnect with his family. Bo, Brandon, and Blue’s lives connect in surprising ways, exposing a vast network of secrets and a technology that threatens to change everything: a form of time travel being used to cover up a string of violent crimes.

Flux is a wild ride. It’s an incredibly unique story with characters that you won’t soon forget. I think a lot of people will be talking about this one when it hits shelves in March. And while that seems far away now, it’s coming sooner than you think, so get excited!

exes and os book cover

Exes and O’s by Amy Lea (Jove Books, January 10)

I’ve been really vibing with cute romcoms this month. Maybe it’s because they go so well with all the corny Christmas movies I love watching this time of year. I’m looking at you, Freddie Prinze Jr Netflix Christmas movie (I know it has a name, but this is its name for me). Anyway, I had a point, and that was…if you’re into that kind of stuff too, then you’re going to want to put this book on your TBR for January 2023. Because it comes out January 10th! So soon!

Tara Chen is a romance novel connoisseur. She still loves love, despite having her heart broken by not one, not two, but 10 different men. All of them dumped her for the same reason: apparently, she can be a little clingy. Still, Tara is determined to find the right guy for her. There’s only one problem. The dating apps just don’t work when you’re looking to have that perfect, romcom style, meet-cute kind of romance.

So what does Tara decide to do? Revisit all of her old flames to see if she can create that trope-worthy, romcom style, second-chance romance. Will it work out the way Tara has carefully planned? Or, is she in for some surprises? (of course she’s in for some surprises…)

the thick and the lean book cover

The Thick and the Lean by Chana Porter (Gallery/Saga Press, April 18 2023)

Lambda Award finalist Chana Porter is back with a new novel, and it’s coming out in early 2023! Inspired by the author’s own issues with body image and eating disorders, The Thick and the Lean explores the true value of food for pleasure rather than just for sustainance.

Seagate is a quaint religious town where abstaining from food makes you closer to God. The town carefully regulates every calorie its citizens consume. But Beatrice has a secret passion for cooking. And she’s hungry. She craves the forbidden flavors of butter and sugar. But if she gives into her desires, she’ll be forced out of the only community she’s ever known.

Meanwhile, Reiko Rimando is facing a mountain of college debt and finds herself turning to cyber criminal activities to avoid a humiliating return back home from the city. Together, and with the guidance of a mysterious cookbook written by a kitchen maid centuries ago, Reiko and Beatrice will fight for a life free from restriction and corporate greed.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“We all experience attraction differently, Some of us fall in and out of love easily. Some of us don’t experience romantic love at all. Some of us have to fight to let ourselves be vulnerable enough to fall in love. Some of us have to fight to let other people love us. Some of us need emotional intimacy in order to experience sexual attraction. All love and ways of loving are love.”

Ever wondered what your favorite celebrities love to read? Well, I have the Instagram account for you! Celebrity Book Recs posts neat graphics that include different celebrities’ fave books, what the celeb has said about the book, and where the book is mentioned as one of their favorites. It’s been really fun reading through their posts so far. Which celebrity do you think has the best taste in books, according to these graphics? I’m really loving Brie Larson’s picks (part 1 and part 2) and Elliot Page’s picks.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

ginger and black cat looking out of the window

Oh hey look! We did get some snow last weekend. Do you see that tiny little patch of white on the grass? Yeah, that’s snow. Look, the cats are very impressed too. They can’t look away. Yes, I am from the south and snow still gets me excited. At least the cats agree with me. And that’s all I have for you today, friends! See you Monday, same time same place.

The Things We Do To Our Friends by Heather Darwent (January 10)

If you’ve been patiently waiting for your next great dark academia read, the wait is (almost) over! This one hits shelves in January, which is already right around the corner and…it’s set in Edinburgh, Scotland, which is such a huge bonus to me.

Clare comes to Edinburgh alone, yearning for a new life and for a chance to reinvent herself. Then she meets Tabitha, a charismatic, beautiful, and intimidatingly rich girl in Clare’s art history class. Immediately, Clare knows she wants to be friends with Tabitha and become a part of Tabitha’s inner circle. After all, when she thought of starting over, Tabitha’s fabulous life was the life she had always envisioned for herself.

But then Tabitha lets Clare in on a little secret, a project she’s been working on. Now she needs Clare’s help. And even though it goes against everything Clare believes to be right, she can’t help but say yes to anything her new friend wants from her. By the time Clare realizes just how far Tabitha will go, it will be far too late.

a witch's guide to fake dating a demon book cover

A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley (Berkley, March 7th)

Before I even saw the cover, this title had me interested. Witches? Demons? Fake dating? Say less. Unfortunately, we have to wait til March 2023 for this quirky romcom, but trust me when I say I will definitely be picking up a copy of this one when the time comes.

Mariel Spark is a witch and a member of the famed, magical Spark family. According to a prophecy, Mariel is destined to be one of the most powerful witches of the past few centuries. But much to her family’s dismay, Mariel would much prefer spending her time baking and gardening versus brewing potions and casting hexes.

But Mariel’s life gets turned upside down when she attempts a spell to summon flour and instead finds herself face to face with a demon. And not just any demon. Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons who will stop at nothing to collect mortal souls. Ozroth refuses to leave Mariel’s side until she completes a bargain, which she refuses to do.

Terrified of what her mother will think when she sees a demon hanging around her at all times, Mariel decided to tell a little lie. She tells her mother she’s dating Ozroth. I’m sure this will go well.

Words of Literary Wisdom

This one’s a little longer but worth the read:

“I’m too weak for it. I mean, everyone is, but I am especially susceptible to its false rewards, you know? It’s designed to addict you, to prey on your insecurities and use them to make you stay. It exploits everybody’s loneliness and promises us community, approval, friendship. Honestly, in that sense, social media is a lot like the Church of Scientology. Or QAnon. Or Charles Manson. And then on top of that — weaponizing a person’s isolation — it convinces every user that she is a minor celebrity, forcing her to curate some sparkly and artificial sampling of her best experiences, demanding a nonstop social performance that has little in common with her inner life, intensifying her narcissism, multiplying her anxieties, narrowing her worldview. All while commodifying her, harvesting her data, and selling it to nefarious corporations so that they can peddle more shit that promises to make her prettier, smarter, more productive, more successful, more beloved.

And throughout all this, you have to act stupefied by your own good luck. Everybody’s like, Words cannot express how fortunate I feel to have met this amazing group of people, blah blah blah. It makes me sick. Everybody influencing, everybody under the influence, everybody staring at their own godforsaken profile, searching for proof that they’re lovable.

And then, once you’re nice and distracted by the hard work of tallying up your failures and comparing them to other people’s triumphs, that’s when the algorithmic predators of late capitalism can pounce, enticing you to partake in consumeristic, financially irresponsible forms of so-called self-care, which is really just advanced selfishness. Facials! Pedicures! Smoothie packs delivered to your door! And like, this is just the surface stuff. The stuff that oxidizes you, personally. But a thousand little obliterations add up, you know? The macro damage that results is even scarier. The hacking, the politically nefarious robots, opinion echo chambers, fearmongering, erosion of truth, etcetera, etcetera. And don’t get me started on the destruction of public discourse. I mean, that’s just my view. Obviously to each her own. But personally, I don’t need it. Any of it…I’m corrupt enough.”

weightless book cover

Weightless by Evette Dionne (Ecco Press, December 6)

Weightless is the final book I’m featuring for Nonfiction November, and what a book to finish with! I’m so excited to share this one with you, and even more excited to let you know that this book will be available NEXT WEEK! How lucky are we?

In Weightless, National Book Award nominee Evette Dionne explores the impossible cultural standards of size, race, and gender. Dionne reflects on her own experiences as a fat Black woman, from the way she was harassed as a child, to her moments of self-discovery as an adolescent hanging out in Internet chatrooms, to her diagnosis with heart failure at age 29. Throughout her personal journey, Dionne confronts the ways in which her body and identity has been policed and controlled.

Dionne’s personal stories tell us so much about the author herself, but they also reveal a great deal about the world we live in and how we as a society view sex, motherhood, health, self-image, and much more.
