MS. MARVEL Coming Soon to Disney+ and More Book Radar!

Dear Book Friends,

I know this is just a newsletter about books, but I’ve done my best to be honest and open with you all. And especially since I’ve shared my cats with you every week, I would feel odd if I didn’t start the newsletter today by sharing some difficult news. Earlier this week, my sweet baby kitty Phantom died unexpectedly. He was only a year and seven months old. It happened quickly. We don’t know why. The vets don’t know why. But we are all (including kitties Murray and Cersei) completely shattered by this loss.

I am so happy that I had the chance to know Phantom for the short time he was here with us. And I am so happy I had an opportunity to share him with you. He was a sweet kitty, and he will be missed more than I can express.

Anyway, you’re here for book news, so I will get to that right away. But stay til the end for one last Phantom picture. Thank you all for letting me share this bit of personal news. I hope your week has been going better than mine!

the final strife book cover

The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi (Del Ray, June 23rd)

What can I say? I can’t help but root for a story where three strong women team up with one another to change the world. After all, that’s the dream. Women supporting women. Crushing everyone that gets in their way. Put that story in a African and Arabian-inspired fantasy world? Include a sapphic storyline? And yes, you can sign me right up.

The Final Strife is the first book in a new fantasy trilogy set in a world where a cruel empire divides its people by blood. Red is the blood of the elite. Blue is the blood of the poor. And clear is the blood of the enslaved. The Empire has begun a set of trials of combat and skill designed to find its new leaders, which means the stage is set for rebellion. Sylah, Anoor, and Hassa—women from completely different backgrounds—will band together and combine their strengths in an attempt to change the world.

This book promises romance, action, adventure, intrigue, suspense, and fabulous, imaginative world-building. I already have a feeling The Final Strife is a book everyone is going to be talking about when it comes out, so mark your calendars!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

black cat in a cat bed

To end today, I just wanted to tell you a little bit more about Phantom. We already had two cats when I saw Phantom’s picture posted on our local shelter’s Instagram back in October 2020, but I fell in love with him and had to have him. By November, I convinced my husband and we went to the shelter to get him.

Phantom was little and shy at first, and he needed surgery on one eye because of a condition called entropion. But his eye didn’t inhibit his ability to play and run around. We called it his magic eye. When he came out of his shell, he ended up being the sweetest, most wonderful cat we could have ever asked for. He had the biggest heart. Our cat Murray took to him right away and they became best friends.

Phantom loved to play. He loved trying to steal our food when we weren’t looking. He loved climbing up to the highest places. He loved cuddling up with his sibling kitties. And we loved him so, so much.

Again, thank you so much for letting me share him with you.

Netflix Drops Full-Length BRIDGERTON Trailer and More Book Radar!

Dear Book Friends,

Happy Monday. I think it’s time for me to open up to you about a hard truth. Something I’m almost embarrassed to share. Okay. Are you ready? Here it is. Sometimes I don’t get much reading done. There are plenty of reasons why this might happen. Work stress. An ill-advised Love Island marathon. Travel. General distraction. I won’t get into the whys, but it happens. And this past week was one of those weeks where I just didn’t get much reading done. I’m coming clean because I feel like it’s my job to read and be up on all the books for you, and look, I dropped the ball this week. But ultimately, reading should be joyous, and it was just not something I had space for this week that often. And I didn’t want to stress about it.

With that in mind, if the “What I’m Reading This Week” section of this newsletter seems really similar to the one from last week, well. You’ll know why. I hope we can move on from this and still be book friends.

For now, here’s a newsletter full of some of the things I do know about books this week.

Prepare Your Shelves!

burn down rise up book cover

Burn Down, Rise Up by Vincent Tirado (Sourcebooks Fire, May 3rd)

Vincent Tirado’s Burn Down, Rise Up was originally slated to release some time in early April, but with all the publishing and supplies shake ups, this book has been pushed back to a May 3rd release. But May will be here before you know it. So you know what I say? I say it’s already time for you to start preparing your shelves for this one.

Tirado’s debut novel is a young adult mystery that’s called a cross between Jordan Peele’s work and Stranger Things. We know how these buzzy comps go. This comparison is sort of accurate, but also rest assured that this book is unique enough that it doesn’t really compare to anything else. And I mean that in the best way possible.

This is the story of a group of friends determined to save their city. In the Bronx, people have started going missing, and no one can explain these strange disappearances. At first, 16-year-old Raquel tries to ignore it. After all, police only look for missing white kids. But then her crush Charlize’s cousin goes missing, and Raquel’s mother comes down with a mysterious illness that seems to be linked to the disappearances. When Raquel and Charlize team up to investigate what’s happening to the people and city they care about, they discover that all of these disappearances might be connected to an urban legend called the Echo Game.

IDK but this could be part of the reason I didn’t get much reading done this week.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

Over the weekend, I went home to see my family, which means getting to visit one of my favorite restaurants in the whole world! I know I mentioned The Grit cookbook around Christmas time, because it’s my go-to recipe book for whenever I’m planning a big comfort meal. But dang, there’s nothing quite like visiting The Grit in person. If you’re ever in Athens, GA, you should pop on in! My other favorite thing about my hometown (besides my family, I guess)? Jittery Joe’s Coffee.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

book cover for the weight of blood

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackon (Harper Collins, September 6th)

Speaking of Tiffany D. Jackson, she has more than one book coming out this year to get excited about! Enjoy a winter romance in White Out when it comes out in November. But before that, pick up Jackson’s wild Carrie retelling that confronts racism in small town America. This book will hit shelves in early September.

Madison Washington is a student at Springville High, a small high school in small-town Georgia. She’s always been the target of bullying at her school, but things get much worse after her big secret is revealed: she’s biracial and has been passing as white, at the behest of her white father Thomas Washington.

After a video that reveals the high school’s racism goes viral, Springville students know they have to rehabilitate their image. Their solution? Hosting the school’s first integrated prom. But of course the students’ intentions aren’t all good. They still have a few surprises for Maddy. And when Maddy reveals another one of her well-kept secrets, she’ll have a big surprise for them as well.

This book came out of nowhere and surprised the heck out of me. Tiffany D. Jackson is quickly becoming one of my must-read authors. At this point, I’m pretty much 100% in on any of her work. Pick up this book when it comes out in the fall, and maybe you’ll be all in too.

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

All this talk of Tiffany D. Jackson got me thinking about authors on Instagram. Tiffany D. Jackson has been posting some pretty great content over on Instagram lately. For instance, I had to applaud this video.

Another one of my favorite authors on Instagram is Akwaeke Emezi. Best of all, they have an Instagram account for their cat GĂĽs PonPon. So if your favorite thing about Book Radar is the cat picture at the end, maybe follow this account for all the cute cat pics.

Do you follow any authors on Instagram? Who are your personal favorites? Let me know!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

black cat on cat tree

I am obsessed with this cat. Everyone, if you’re new here, this is Phantom, and he’s the sweetest cat you’ll ever meet. He’s also wild as heck and he chirps and he’s very tiny. I call him Nugget because he is the littlest of our three cats. By far.

Anyway, if you knew all of that already, I hope you enjoyed hearing it again!

And that’s all I have for you today, friends. Have a wonderful weekend!

Booth Book Cover

Booth by Karen Joy Fowler (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, March 8)

Make some shelf room right away, because this one’s out tomorrow. Booth is bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler’s examination of the family behind one of the most intimate figures in American history: John Wilkes Booth. And while this isn’t the first book to ever explore the history of the Booth family, this is probably the best one. Disclaimer: I’m not, like, an expert on books about John Wilkes Booth or anything, but this is probably the best book about the Booths.

It all starts in 1822, when Mary Ann and Junius Booth move into a secret cabin thirty miles northeast of Baltimore. There, they start a farm, have ten children, and raise their family. Junius is an acclaimed Shakespearean actor and is away from home for a good portion of the year, leaving Mary Ann to care for their ten children. As the world around the Booths begin to change and the country is on the brink of secession and civil war, the family starts to emerge from their hidden lives to become one of the country’s leading theatrical families. But along with the Booth family’s triumphs come many scandals.

Interspersed with the story of the Booths, Fowler also gives readers a look inside the life of Abraham Lincoln, who at the start of the story is a state congressman in Illinois. Of course, eventually the story of the Booths will tragically collide with Lincoln’s. Even though readers will know where Lincoln’s story will eventually end, this isn’t a story about John Wilkes Booth and Lincoln’s assassination. This is the story of a family and a country in conflict and on the precipice of change.

Monday Memes

I have to say the Phenomenal Books Instagram account has really been killing it with the bookish memes. Here’s one I shared on my own personal ‘gram because it definitely hit home. And so now I’m sharing it with you!

Other Things That Make Me Happy

This has been out for a while, but I always return to it when I want to play a game and I need a good laugh. Yes, it’s Monster Prom. If you don’t know what this game is yet, omg yay I get to tell you about it. It’s a dating sim where you play a monster attending a special monster high school. By the end of the school term, you have to get one of the other monsters to go to the prom with you. And what’s even cooler is that this can be played as a multi-player game, which is really unusual for a dating sim. Heads up: the jokes in this game are 100% NSFW, so proceed with caution.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

I know there’s nothing I can say to make things better, but I also just want to acknowledge that things are scary. I’m sending you hugs and best wishes and hopes for happier days.

the daughter of doctor moreau

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Ray, July 19th)

At this point, Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an insta-read author for me. If she has a new book coming out, it’s going straight to the top of my TBR pile. And not simply because her books are a good. The best thing about Silvia Moreno-Garcia is that you’re never sure where her stories will take you. With Mexican Gothic, readers got a chilling gothic tale. Gods of Jade and Shadow, inventive historical fantasy based in Mayan mythology. Velvet Was the Night, a political noir thriller. With The Daughter of Doctor Moreau, Silvia Moreno-Garcia is serving a “dreamy reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Mexico.”

Carlota Moreau is the only daughter of evil genius Doctor Moreau. She has spent her life growing up in a distant estate, safe from the hardships of the Yucatán peninsula. With the assistance of Montgomery Laughton, the doctor spends his days creating hybrids, creatures that are part animal and part human. These science experiments, financed by the wealthy and powerful Lizaldes, are going perfectly according to Doctor Moreau’s plans. But then the abrupt arrival of Eduardo Lizalde, the son of Doctor Moreau’s patron, threatens to unravel everything.

With this atmospheric new novel, Moreno-Garcia is once again entering new storytelling territory, mixing horror, science fiction, and fantasy. If somehow you’ve made it this far in your reading life without reading one of this author’s novels, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau is the perfect excuse to to finally pick up one of her books.

run towards the danger

Run Towards the Danger by Sarah Polley (Penguin, March 1st)

You’ve probably heard of this author. Sarah Polley is an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director, and actor. Now this triple-threat is gearing up to become a quadruple-threat as she taps into her exquisite storytelling abilities for this collection of essays. Run Towards the Danger is already getting tons of positive reviews (so it’s not just me!) so this is one you’ll definitely want to pick up when it comes out tomorrow!

I know I say this all the time but… where has the time gone. March 1st is tomorrow? Dang, 2022, slow down.

Anyway, Run Towards the Danger is a book of six essays in which Polley explores personal memories from her past while also acknowledging and unpacking the fallibility of those memories. Polley tells stories from her life, ranging from moments of stage fright to high-risk childbirth to struggling in the aftermath of a concussion. Furthermore, the author looks at how these moments from her past echo in her adult life. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

Other Things That Make Me Happy

By the time you read this, I will have gone to see Hasan Minhaj’s stand-up show at Radio City Music Hall. I already know it’s going to make me happy because I love him. But because I can’t exactly share that experience with you, here’s the next best thing. His special Homecoming King on Netflix is pretty much my favorite stand-up special ever. If you’ve never seen it, check it out, and I hope you enjoy!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

cat shouting with books

Here is an action shot of Murray in mid-meow. Also there are books in this picture, so if for some reason you’re not feeling the cat, I also give you books.

But if you don’t love this cat, don’t tell me about it. Because that would make me sad.

Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful week! Stay safe! Treat yourself to something! Remember you are doing good things.

Can’t Wait for This One

cover of Upgrade by Blake Crouch

Upgrade by Blake Crouch (Ballantine Books, July 12)

How is it that none of Blake Crouch’s novels have been made into movies yet? Crouch’s sci-fi stories are action-packed, cinematic page-turners that seem perfect for the big screen. And yet here we are, anticipating another Blake Crouch novel in 2022 and still no Crouch movies in sight. Apparently, Dark Matter is being developed into a series for Apple TV+, but we have very few details right now, so we’ll just have to wait and see. But trust me. If you haven’t read Dark Matter yet, this is going to be an exciting watch.

Well, thankfully we at least have a release date for Crouch’s new novel. Upgrade is coming out in July 12th. Here’s the deal. Logan Ramsay has been infected by a virus. But as Logan starts to feel better and healthier, he realizes something unexpected is happening to him. He’s feeling smarter with each passing day, and he soon realizes that the virus has genetically modified him. He’s becoming something more, something better than human. But what do these new powers mean? And what will happen if these powers get into the wrong hands?

Blake Crouch’s sci-fi stories are inventive and fun, and this one looks like it’s going to be more of what fans of his work already love. This one will probably soon be added to my list of books that should be movies. Mark my words!

Have I talked to y’all about “squeecore” yet? Wow, people just love adding “core” to things, don’t they? Well, in case I haven’t brought it up before, “squeecore” is a new “movement” in SFF. And it’s pretty divisive as a term and as a sub-genre. Why? Well, check out this discussion of squeecore, featuring several BookTubers, to find out more.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Here’s a picture of Phantom and Murray relaxing after a rowdy meeting of the Bad Boys Club. Bad Boys Club meetings usually involve running around, chasing each other, knocking things over, and just generally getting into trouble. Obviously after all of that, the club members get pretty tuckered out and need nap time.

Anyway, that is all for today! I hope you have a pleasant weekend, and I’ll see you next time, friends.

our wives under the sea book cover

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (Picador, March 3)

Recently, I read Cherie Dimaline’s Empire of Wild. And I’m always thinking about Annihilation, specifically the film directed by my dude Alex Garland, but also the book by Jeff VanderMeer is great as well. I know, it’s blasphemy to say I like a movie better than a book, but I’m living my truth. Anyway, what’s my point? I think Empire of Wild, the film version of Annihilation, and this book Our Wives Under the Sea fall under my new favorite book genre. And that genre is: Romantic partner returns after mysteriously disappearing, but is not the same as they were before. Chilling!

In Julia Armfield’s debut novel Our Wives Under the Sea, Leah finally returns to her wife Miri after a deep-sea mission that ended in disaster. Miri is relieved she finally has her wife back, but it soon becomes clear that (you guessed it) Leah is not the same person she was before the mission. Whatever happened to Leah on that deep sea vessel, and whatever it was that she was doing down on the ocean floor, some part of that has come back with her. Miri desperately wants to return to the life they had before, but she can feel her wife slowly slipping away from her.

So this comic really resonated with me.

Anyway, that is all for today, everyone. Thanks for stopping by Book Radar on this fine Monday. I will see you soon. Have a wonderful week.

the getaway book cover

The Getaway by Lamar Giles (Scholastic Press, September 20)

Ohhhhhhh my gosh. I cannot contain my excitement. So the cover reveal for Lamar Giles’ newest YA novel has just dropped, and it looks so, so good. I was not even aware this book was coming out until the cover reveal jumped up at me. So I was surprised. Disarmed. Overwhelmed.

Why am I so excited? I truly feel like Lamar Giles’ Not So Pure and Simple is one of the most underrated YA novels I’ve ever read. Like, it is so, so good, and I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me and why aren’t more people talking about this book? Now Giles’ latest novel is a YA horror situation? This is so up my alley it’s like it was written for me. But this isn’t all about me. Lamar Giles is one of those authors who I feel like I can trust enough to write well across genres, and I feel confident in recommending him to all sorts of readers. So not only am I excited about this for myself, but I feel pretty sure you should be excited about it too.

Words of Literary Wisdom

I don’t have a quote from a book I’m currently reading that I want to share this week, so I thought I’d return to an old favorite.

“I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it’s just too much. The current’s too strong. They’ve got to let go, drift apart. That’s how it is with us. It’s a shame, Kath, because we’ve loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can’t stay together forever.”

— Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

My favorite thing this week has been watching people on Booktube talk about whether or not books on BookTok are worth the hype. Here are some examples:

What are your opinions on these books? Worth the hype? Why are these the books that are getting all the love? I find viral books fascinating.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

black cat sitting on a person's lap next to a copy of The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward.

Don’t you love it when you recommend a book to a friend and they actually read it? Even better: you recommend a book to a friend, they actually read it, and they send you a picture of their cat sitting with them while they read the book.

When something that miraculous happens to you, you have to share the photo evidence. So with permission, I am sharing with you this picture of Chucky, the beautiful black kitty who’s loving the black cat rep in The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. Thanks for sharing, Ellis! And of course I hope you’re loving the book.

That’s a wrap on Book Radar for this week. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Stay safe. Stay warm. Read many, many books.

sundial book cover

Sundial by Catriona Ward (Tor Nightfire, March 1)

I’ve only mentioned it 100 times, but in case you’re new here, Catriona Ward’s The Last House on Needless Street was my favorite book of 2021. As soon as I finished it, I knocked Sundial up to the very top of my to-read list for 2022. Now that the release date for this one is almost here, I’m happy to report that Sundial does not disappoint, and I’m excited for everyone to read it.

In this psychological horror novel, we follow Rob, who escaped her childhood home Sundial in search of a normal life. Now she has a husband, two kids, and a house in the suburbs, but the fears of what she’s left behind remain. And in her oldest daughter Callie, who collects bones and talks to imaginary friends, Rob sees echos of her past.

Sundial is a chilling horror novel that will play tricks with your mind, but it’s also a heart-wrenching family drama centered around one of the most dysfunctional families you’ve ever read about. Aside from that, much like The Last House on Needless Street, it’s best to go into Sundial knowing as little as possible. The story will surprise you, it will unsettle you, and it will be one you won’t soon forget.

Okay, this isn’t really a book meme, but for those of you who are here for Valentine’s Day and also love horror (my people!): these valentines are perfect for you. I especially love the Midsommar one.

And here’s one that should please everybody. Does this sound like an ideal vacation or what?

More about the books? Here are 8 new romance novels you’ll fall in love with in 2022. Personally, I’m especially excited about One Night On the Island by Josie Silver and You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

So my husband left his exercise mat out, and the cats decided it was a toy. Here we have Murray hiding under the mat and Phantom attacking his tail. When they get like this I usually call them the Bad Boys Club. What we’re witnessing is a Bad Boys Club meeting.

And if you’re wondering about all of those board games, well, my husband runs a board game shop, so if you’re ever looking for board game recommendations, I’ve got you covered there as well!

That’s all for now. Have a happy Valentine’s Day (and beyond)!
