There There by Tommy Orange (Knopf, June 5)

Get ready to start hearing about this book everywhere. It’s a powerful, contemporary, multi-generational portrait of Native Americans in the United States, revolving around several people coming together at a powwow. There are people hoping to repair rifts, defeat addiction, participate in culture, and also cause grief. It’s a devastating and sad novel, but also filled to the brim with beauty and hope. This one will stay with you for a long time.

Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach by Kelly Robson (Tor.com, March 13)

I am beginning to think that Tor.com publishes books just for me, because I love every single one! This is a fantastic, weird future Earth story, about a future people (some of whom now have tentacles for legs) who travel back in time to learn about the devastation caused by climate change. In observing the floods, they hope to correct things in the future. But there is also politics, red tape, and banking issues to contend with. And even more stuff that I am doing a bad job describing. Just trust me: This book is hella fun.

The Trauma Cleaner: One Woman’s Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster by Sarah Krasnostein (St. Martin’s Press, April 10)

I am a fan of books that wreck me, and HOLY CATS, did this one fit the bill. The true story of the remarkable life of Sandra Pankhurst, a woman in Australia who was raised as a boy in a violent home, became a husband and father, had gender confirmation surgery, worked as a sex worker, and is a now a wife and businesswoman, the owner of a cleaning company that specializes in trauma cleanups. She goes in and takes care of messes that 99.99999% of the population couldn’t fathom. But it is her amazing spirit and belief in kindness, and Krasnostein’s storytelling, that make this such a fascinating, life-affirming story.

The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After by Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil (Crown, April 24)

In 1994, Wamariya and her sister fled the Rwandan massacre and spent the next several years walking through other African countries in search of safety before they were granted refugee status by the United States. This is her story about her two lives, one of fear and death, and the other seemingly the American dream but always shadowed by her past. I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet but it is at the top of my list!

The death of Le Guin last week was a tremendous loss to literature. I loved her novels, but recently discovered I love her nonfiction even more. She was brilliant, acerbic, blisteringly funny, and wildly empathetic. This is a slim collection of her discussing writing, always a treat. She will be greatly missed.

Speak No Evil by Uzodinma Iweala (Harper, March 6)

An emotional, wrenching new novel from the author of Beasts of No Nation, about a young Nigerian American in a D.C. high school who is amazing at athletics and has been accepted to Harvard. But he’s feeling emotionally tormented from trying to hide the fact that he is gay from his conservative parents, who consider it a sin. 

And this is funny.

Not My White Savior: A Memoir in Poems by Julayne Lee (Rare Bird Books, March 13)

Holy cats, I cried so much reading this book. When Lee was a baby, she was adopted from South Korea and brought to Minnesota by a white Christian family. This is her beautiful, angry memoir about her loss of identity and the damage caused by being raised in an strict environment where she was repeatedly told how lucky she was, not to mention all the ignorant remarks people made to her about her heritage, her looks, and her homeland. This is a powerful book.

Herding Cats: A Sarah’s Scribbles Collection by Sarah Andersen (Andrew McMeel Publishing, March 27)

I have never related so hard to a comic before and I continue to be delighted and charmed by Sarah’s Scribbles. This is Andersen’s third collection, filled with both comics from her website and new comics, plus a bit of great advice at the end of this one. Love, love, love her.

WHOOP! WHOOP! WHOOP! A new series from Alyssa Cole is on the way, and it’s the cat’s pajamas. Naledi is a doesn’t have time for nonsense, especially emails claiming she’s bethrothed to an African prince. But when said prince shows up, he decides to win her over without revealing his royalty. This is a delightful Cinderella/Prince and the Pauper tale from one of the most wonderful writers in the biz.

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough

(TW for sexual assault.) This is a gorgeous, heartbreaking novel in verse about the real-life painter Artemisia Gentileschi, considered to be one of the most talented painters of her time, and the true story of how her father sued for ‘property damage’ after she was raped by her instructor. Make no mistake, her story is brutal, as is her quest for justice, but it is also filled with hope and an important message that women’s voices cannot be silenced.

And this is funny.
