Jane is a fantastic character, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent together.

Red Clocks by Leni Zumas

Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale, hold on to your dystopian hats! This is a scathing, inventive novel about a future where women’s reproductive rights are once again not their own, and where many women are subjected to witch hunts. (Should be shelved under ‘horror.’) Centered around five women living very different lives in the book’s prohibitive world, it is a scary but also hopeful look at motherhood and pregnancy.

And this is funny.

Well, she tried. (The second option sounds so exciting, tbh.)

Do I even need to say anything? LOOK AT THIS COVER. I would buy this just for the cover. Luckily the insides are hella awesome, as well. Featuring an incredible line-up of authors including John Scalzi, Catherynne M. Valente, Ken Liu, Max Gladstone, Alyssa Wong, and Jonathan Maberry.

Everything Is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius, Heroin, Love, and Loss by Stephanie Wittels Wachs (Sourcebooks, March 8, 2018) 

To be completely honest, I started reading this book because the galley was going to expire. I cannot claim to be a fan of Harris Wittels’ comedy, although I do love Parks & Rec. But this is something besides a story about a lost celebrity, it’s an achingly real look at what death does to those left behind. I cried through a lot of this book, but in a “we are so lucky to be alive” kind of way.

And this is funny.

If nothing else about the coming year excites you, at least be happy we have a new Alexander Chee book! And it’s nonfiction! I love his novels, but he is also wicked smart, and has many insightful, thoughtful things to say about the world. He is a beacon in troubled waters, and I feel like I’m learning to become a better human when I read him.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (Henry Holt and Company for Young Readers, March 6, 2018)

BELIEVE THE HYPE. This trilogy landed a HUGE deal, and for good reason (er, at least for the first book): It’s a wildly fantastical (and fantastic) tale of magic, royalty, and vengeance that tackles real issues, like racism and prejudice. What an epic nerdpurr. Be ready to see this book everywhere. Oh ya, did I mention it’s 600 pages long? GIANT FANTASY GOODNESS FTW.

This one is a wild, Sleeping Beautiy-ish style western, about a woman named Carol with a condition that makes her fall into comas that give the appearance of her having died. She always recovers, until the day her greedy husband decides to have her declared dead. Now the only other person who knows Carol”s secret must come to her aid before she’s buried alive! SPOILER: This is not a good book for people with taphophobia.

Reading this book this summer kicked off a month-long faerie book binge. But this still might have been my favorite. Fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo (and Holly Black, of course!) will love this tale of magic, royalty, and treachery about two sisters kidnapped from this world and raised in the High Court of Faerie.

A State of Freedom: A Novel by Neel Mukherjee (W.W. Norton & Company, January 2, 2018)

Set in contemporary India, this is a searing portrait of displacement and migration, featuring five characters in different circumstances trying to find their way in the world. It’s a devastating, gorgeously written story of people seeking to change their lives.

Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli have co-written What If It’s Us, to be published in 2018.

Fox is developing The Dime, based on the novel by Kathleen Kent.

Jill Scott cast as Lady Eve in Black Lightning series.

Starz is moving ahead with its adaptation of Stephanie Danler’s Sweetbitter.

Saladin Ahmed will collaborate with artist Sami Kivelä on an original comic series, Abbott, which will launch in January 2018

Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins are set to star in a version of King Lear.

There he finds love with a beautiful artist, and becomes torn between the life he craves and following the tradition of his homeland. It’s gorgeous.

Mean by Myriam Gurba (Coffee House Press, November 14) 

The story of Gurba’s coming of age as a queer, mixed-race Chicana, told in blistering prose. Gurba tackles several very important, serious subjects such as racism and homophobia, and manages to make the discussions humorous while laying down hard truths and great points. I wish this had been twice as long.

I don’t know if I can do much better than the blurb for this book, which described it as “an epic saga reminiscent of The Godfather with magic and kungfu.” But I can add “OMG this book is such fun!” The Green Bone warriors use jade to enhance their magic, but a powerful new drug appears in the city that allows anyone to use jade, and throws the balance of power into chaos.

Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak (Bloomsbury USA, December 5)
