First Look at the New Lauren Groff and More Book News

Welcome back, book fans! I had a glorious week in NYC, learning all about exciting upcoming books. I can’t wait to share them with you in the coming months! Hope you also had a wonderful week, and that you’re reading something marvelous! Enjoy your upcoming week, and be excellent to each other. – xoxo, Liberty

The seventh Duke of Ripley will never win prizes for virtue, but even he draws the line at running off with his best friend’s bride. All he’s trying to do is recapture the slightly inebriated Lady Olympia and return her to her bridegroom. The bookish and bespectacled Olympia is bent on getting away from her puzzling marriage to a rakish duke – but is even more puzzled when the world-famous hellion the Duke of Ripley is trying to do the honorable thing in returning her to her intended. Whatever his motivations, she has no intention of making this an easy chase…

nice try jane sinnerNice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke

17-year-old Jane Sinner has hit some speed bumps in the road of life. Now expelled from school, she agrees to participate in a reality show at a college campus where she can finish also get her high school diploma. As the show gathers more ratings and fans, Jane learns what she needs from life as she prepares to enter it on her own. Jane is a fantastic character, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent together.

red clocksRed Clocks by Leni Zumas

Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale, hold on to your dystopian hats! This is a scathing, inventive novel about a future where women’s reproductive rights are once again not their own, and where many women are subjected to witch hunts. (Should be shelved under ‘horror.’) Centered around five women living very different lives in the book’s prohibitive world, it is a scary but also hopeful look at motherhood and pregnancy.

And this is funny.

Well, she tried. (The second option sounds so exciting, tbh.)

everything is horrible and wonderfulEverything Is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius, Heroin, Love, and Loss by Stephanie Wittels Wachs (Sourcebooks, March 8, 2018)

To be completely honest, I started reading this book because the galley was going to expire. I cannot claim to be a fan of Harris Wittels’ comedy, although I do love Parks & Rec. But this is something besides a story about a lost celebrity, it’s an achingly real look at what death does to those left behind. I cried through a lot of this book, but in a “we are so lucky to be alive” kind of way.

And this is funny.

If nothing else about the coming year excites you, at least be happy we have a new Alexander Chee book! And it’s nonfiction! He is a beacon in troubled waters, and I feel like I’m learning to become a better human when I read him.

But when she is invited to join a poetry slam club at her school, she must decide whether she will go against her mother’s strict rules or pass on the opportunity. This book shines.

jade cityJade City by Fonda Lee (Orbit, November 7)

I don’t know if I can do much better than the blurb for this book, which described it as “an epic saga reminiscent of The Godfather with magic and kungfu.” But I can add “OMG this book is such fun!” The Green Bone warriors use jade to enhance their magic, but a powerful new drug appears in the city that allows anyone to use jade, and throws the balance of power into chaos.

three daughters of eveThree Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak (Bloomsbury USA, December 5)

When Peri’s handbag is snatched as she makes her way to a party, a photograph of three women falls out – a reminder of the painful past she has tried to forget. As Peri continues on to the party, her head is filled with memories of a time when she traveled from Istanbul to the Oxford University, and the profound effect that time had on her. This is a stunning book by Turkey’s most acclaimed novelist, a timely novel about faith and love both in the past and the present.

And this is funny.

Sarah MacLean has Moonstruck feels.

bunkBunk: The Rise of Hoaxes, Humbug, Plagiarists, Phonies, Post-Facts, and Fake News by Kevin Young

Poet and critic Young examines how hoaxes have moved from sideshow acts to being in the center stage of American culture. From P.T. Barnum to Donald Trump, he discusses famous examples of forgers and fakers, and how we are living now in a post-factual world. This was just listed on the National Book Award longlist for nonfiction! (Graywolf Press, November 14)
