I don’t know if I can do much better than the blurb for this book, which described it as “an epic saga reminiscent of The Godfather with magic and kungfu.” But I can add “OMG this book is such fun!” The Green Bone warriors use jade to enhance their magic, but a powerful new drug appears in the city that allows anyone to use jade, and throws the balance of power into chaos.

Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak (Bloomsbury USA, December 5)

When Peri’s handbag is snatched as she makes her way to a party, a photograph of three women falls out – a reminder of the painful past she has tried to forget. As Peri continues on to the party, her head is filled with memories of a time when she traveled from Istanbul to the Oxford University, and the profound effect that time had on her. The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill (Oni Press, October 31): *Chandler Bing voice* Could this book BE any cuter? I’m thinking, nope, it could not. It has tiny DRAGONS that grow leave on their horns which people then use to make TEA. The whole concept is so adorable I could die. The world of Greta and the dragon tea makers is about as delightful and inclusive as you can get. I loved this book with the heat of a thousand suns.

Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo (Knopf, August 22): Powerful debut set in Nigeria told from the perspectives of both a husband and wife about their marriage. Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke (Mulholland Books, Sept. 12): This novel is fantastic! Instead of Jay Porter, her lawyer character, this one stars Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger. Mathews must solve two murders – a visiting black lawyer and a local white woman – that have occurred in the sleepy little town of Lark before tensions between the citizens explode into violence. A timely look at race, law enforcement, and justice.

Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor (Catapult, Oct. 3): This was just longlisted for the Man Booker prize, and for good reason: It’s an extraordinarily well-written look at community and tragedy. In a small English village, a girl goes missing, and doesn’t reappear. As the seasons pass by and the case is not resolved, McGregor details how the village both comes together and fractures. It’s a chronicle of 13 years of births, deaths, secrets and violence. It’s quite a stunner.

Just as Jess is coming to terms with being permanently friend zoned, Margot’s best friend disappears, and Jess and Angie are pulled into a tangled web of secrets and lies. This one is super twisty and super fun. And HOLY CATS, THAT COVER!

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman (Oct. 10, 2017): In case you hadn’t heard: there is a sequel to Practical Magic! Well, it’s more of a prequel, following the witchy Owens aunts as they grow up in the early 1960s. But still. It exists, two decades after the first book. And it’s GOOD! You don’t have to have read Practical Magic to follow the plot of this one, but you should! And if you’ve already read it, isn’t it time for a reread? Treat yourself to a little magic.
