I’m currently reading an ARC of Game On by Seressia Glass, and it was like the jolt of joy I needed after the last book I finished ended up being a “just okay” thriller. I also recently picked up You, Again, both to work on my purchased-in-2023-TBR-pile and to get prepared for the Romance Book Club meetup at one of my local indies, and I was already delighted with it one chapter in. I definitely see the When Harry Met Sally vibes already and am here for it. In fact, I may be due for a re-watch of this soon.

Sleepy Hollow Candle by AARKAORIGINS

I know that most people may think of Sleepy Hollow as being just for the horror lovers, but, to be fair, there is a love triangle at the center of the story. I’m also sharing this candle in honor of one of this week’s new releases that I’m super excited about (see below) since it would be perfect to use while reading it. There are three options for this, with the one pictured starting at $25

New Releases

cover of Splinter

Splinter by Jasper Hyde

Dr. Drusilla is the medical examiner for Sleepy Hollow, and when the bodies of her sister’s friends start showing up sans their heads, it’s more than a little concerning. The reappearance of her ex, Ichabod, doesn’t help the stress levels for her, either. When an encounter with the Headless Horseman ends with her sister Katrina going missing, she has to turn to Ichabod for his monster-hunting skills to try to find her before it is too late, even if their feelings are not even close to being buried.

cover of Outdrawn

Outdrawn by Deanna Grey

Noah and Sage are both extremely talented webcomic artists who have worked hard to get where they are. They are also long-time rivals, and this is heightened when the two are paired together for the relaunch of Queen Leisah, a cult classic. Now they have to work as a team, or at least give the appearance of cooperation, to make sure nothing derails this exciting event. Soon, the close working quarters lead to the two women looking at each other in a different way than they ever had before.

Riot Recommendations

It occurred to me the other day that human beings really are a social species. Even the most introverted of introverts craved some in-person interaction during the initial height of the pandemic in 2020.

And while this doesn’t mean we’re all clamoring to go into the out all the time (’cause I know I’m not), it does somewhat account for why radio, or more currently, podcasts, are so popular. Even if you’re by yourself, you’re listening to someone speak rather than music or the sound of silence around you all the time.

With that in mind, today’s recommendations feature podcast/radio show hosts. Enjoy!

cover of Crimes of Passion

Crimes of Passion by Jack Harbon

Emery and Calvin are podcast hosts who can’t stand one another. However, when the last wish of a late fan was to have them do a collaboration, neither feel that they can turn the request down. When their numbers begin to take off after the recording is done, neither can deny the chemistry that they obviously have both in and outside of the studio.

cover of Hello, Darkness

Hello, Darkness by Sandra Brown

Paris is a late-night radio talk show host in Austin, Texas, who finds herself the target of a bitter, jilted man. Valentino, as he refers to himself, blames her for his girlfriend leaving him and calls in one night to let her know he is planning on killing his ex and then coming after her. Fearing for her life, Paris has to join forces with APD and crime psychologist Dean, someone whom she has a complicated history with. Old passions arise as they work together to try to make sure that Valentino doesn’t get the chance to make good on his threat.

And that’s all I have for y’all this fine Monday morning. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday, and in the meantime, I’m still known to float around over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

In an effort to make good on one of my bookish endeavors for this year, I’ve decided that, barring my BOTM subscription, I am going to be on a book-buying ban for the next two months. I can feel the wave of warranted disbelief headed my way right now, which is fair. But I am still a bit upset with myself for being so far behind on reading the books I’ve bought this year. So no more hauls until 2024. However, I also can’t say that this won’t be me when my partner and I go holiday shopping for other people.

Riot Recommendations

November is NaNoWriMo! Every year, I say I’m going to go for it again, and then before I know it, it’s December. I know there is still time to do it, even if I have to play catch up to it. I’ve also come to realize that writing is still writing even if you don’t finish a manuscript in the month’s time. And I’ve reconciled myself with the fact that the most I may write are a handful of scenes that have been playing in my head for a bit rather than a full-length novel, and am perfectly fine with it.

Now, with that said, today’s recommendations all feature a romance writer, which seemed fitting given the month. Enjoy!

cover of The Billionaire's Boyfriend

The Billionaire’s Boyfriend by Robin Knight

Romance writer Matthew is dealing with the worst case of writer’s block ever. Inspiration unexpectedly comes when his side hustle as a flower delivery person ends up with him saving the life of billionaire banker, Calvin. However, while this type of pair-up works well in the pages of a book, reality is a different story, especially when secrets from Cal’s past come to light and threaten the budding romance between the two men.

A Summer for Scandal by Lydia San Andrés

Emilia has a secret; she writes a scintillating serial under a pen name. When she and her sister go to a boating party, she is surprised to discover that handsome literary critic Ruben will also be in attendance. She is even more shocked when he begins to disparage her work, not knowing that he is in the company of the author. Despite this rough start, the two are drawn together, but the fact that Ruben is determined to expose the writer of those stories to help his newspaper could threaten a great love match before it starts.

Hello November

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

We’re in the first full week of November (hence the newsletter title), which means that 2024 can be seen on the not-too-distant horizon. Seriously, it’s only nine weeks away, which boggles my mind. I’m going to try my hardest to not focus too much on that or the associated busyness that will be crammed into those weeks.

Instead, I will do what I always do, which is focus on book goals. Which for this month is to try — seriously try — to play catch-up on all that I’ve purchased this year.

Power up your reading life with thoughtful writing on books and publishing, courtesy of The Deep Dive. Riot Recommendations

On last week’s episode of the When in Romance podcast, Trish and Jess discussed this video from Jessen Reads Romance about spiciness in romances and how important it may or may not be. Be sure to give both a listen, although hopefully, you’re already a regular listener of WIR, because there’s a lot of good food for thought there. Both got me thinking of my own opinion on it.

I’ve said before that, for the most part, I don’t care about the level of spice in a romance. And that is true. Do I like to know the level going in? Absolutely; I’ve even gone so far as to make my own personal rating system. But that is a personal preference and a courtesy that I tend to extend to others.

However, much as sex doesn’t make a relationship, it doesn’t make a romance novel. The love story does. And, honestly, if there is too much sex in a romance novel with a noticeable lack of relationship development, it will leave me (pardon the phrasing) wanting. I have read at least one book this year where I felt there was too much on-the-page sex.

That said, my recommendations today are in consideration of those who may prefer low steam, off the pages, or very few sex scenes on the page. Because, after all, when it comes to romance, the one thing we all yearn for is an HEA.

cover of Forbidden

Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins

In search of a new life, Eddy heads West and, through a series of circumstances, gets stuck in Nevada. She vows to stay there only until she saves up enough money working for Rhine to continue on to California. Despite her best intentions, she finds herself drawn to the handsome man but knows they can never be. What she doesn’t know is that Rhine has spent most of his life passing for white, but the draw he feels to Eddy is causing him to wonder if he wants to continue the charade any longer. This is a very slow burn with one on-the-page scene that comes at the end of the novel.

cover of Calling the Shots

Calling the Shots by Kelly Farmer

Regan may be retired from being on the ice, but her love of hockey lands her a job as the couch for the Boston Ice. This places her in direct opposition to one-time hook-up and now rival Tierney, who is the coach for the New York Lady Libertys. As the two teams face off, both women quickly realize that the embers of their fling are still simmering and wonder if they can be professional enough to have completely separate relationships both on and off the ice. This is one where everything is off the pages, but the tension build-up is quite delightful.

And that’s all for this Monday morning. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday, and in the meantime, you can still find me over on the bird app under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

How are we already in November? It’s hard to fathom that there are only two months left in the year. Rather than focus on that and the other complex emotions that can arise this time of the year, I’m going to try to focus on having fun where I can while making sure to take the necessary breaks. Up first is the Día de Los Muertos event at the Libros Bookstore tomorrow. And then for the rest of the weekend, I’ll likely be doing a mix of relaxing, writing, and reading since my TBR pile isn’t shrinking by any means.

cover of A Holly Jolly Christmas

A Holly Jolly Christmas by Emily Wright

Despite constant calls from her family and friends, Holly hasn’t returned home to Mistleberry since her brother’s death. Another thing keeping her away from those associated painful memories is the fear of running into her ex, Vicky, the one she feels got away. Riot Recommendations

Today’s recommendations are focused on fall vibes. Yes, I know that October is part of that season, but if we’re being truly honest with ourselves, those 31 days are all about the Halloween vibes. And no one can convince me otherwise.

As such, it means that the end of September and all of November are devoted to those autumnal feels, hence the reason for today’s recommendations. Enjoy!

Things are a bit stressful for horror writer Amy at the moment. Not only is she suffering writer’s block after calling off her wedding, but now her beloved grandfather needs her help with his recovery after driving through a coffee shop in her hometown. Since it’s a small town, she knows chances are high to run into her childhood best friend and first love, Kit, who is also the reason for her leaving town in the first place. While this seems like the perfect set-up for a second chance, Kit is still holding on to a secret that may prove to be too much to get over.

cover of What a Match

It will always be Halloween season in my heart, and if you’re like-minded, then these horror romances are for you.

Happy Halloween Eve

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Tomorrow is Halloween! It’s a bit bittersweet thought since it means that it will be another 365 days (2024 is a Leap Year) before the holiday rolls around again. Although, if we go by when the Halloween season “officially” begins (July 5th), it’s only 248 days away. So, that’s not too bad! Whatever your plans are for tomorrow, I hope that you have a good time. I will probably stay in and watch some horror movies solo since my spouse will be working, and the Teenager “Nopes” the heck out of anything that has to do with scary movies. Then again, he did recently express an interest in watching Five Nights at Freddy’s, so who knows?

It’s fall y’all, and this season is the extra perfect time of the year to cozy up with an engaging book or two. Sometimes, though, it can be hard to pick what to read next, and that is where TBR comes in. No matter what your preferred genre is, TBR’s Bibliologists, also known as Bibs, work to find the perfect ones for you to add to your book pile. Sign up here to pick your preferred plan and wait for the recommendations to roll in!

Riot Recommendations

We’re finishing October with a few more paranormal romances. I had a lot of fun making that the theme for this month, and hopefully, you did as well. Today’s recommendations both involve ghosts and/or haunted locations, which also fits perfectly with one of this week’s releases. Enjoy!

the ghost bride cover image

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

Li Lan is the daughter of a family on the brink of bankruptcy who is offered the chance to be a ghost bride. This will help her family financially but will also resign her to a life of having a specter for a groom. When she arrives at Lim’s mansion, she finds herself haunted by her ghostly fiancé as well as her desire for Tian Bai, the current heir. She has to work to uncover the secrets of the Lim family and her own to avoid being stuck in the ghostly world forever. This one may be more literary fiction with a strong romantic theme, but from what I see, it does have a HEA, so I’m counting it.

cover of Under His Spell

Under His Spell by MINK

Royce lives in Raven Ridge, a reportedly haunted house, a rumor he pays no attention to. That is, until the intriguing Sienna shows an interest in the spectral happenings of his house, and then he’s on board, even going so far as to plan hauntings. This proves to be unnecessary when Sienna arrives because strange things happen on their own, and it’s a race to keep them both safe from the house’s past.

Here are (just some) of the more popular 2023 romance novels. Yes, we’re getting to that time of the year already. No, I can’t believe it either.

Harlequin’s popular series, the Montana Mavericks, was recently released as a podcast! Click here to find it on your favorite streaming platform and catch up on the first few episodes.

Like many other readers, I also enjoy the various “Stuff Your Kindle” events. There is another one coming up this week, which is specifically designed to be more inclusive of Black authors.

And that is all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back in Thursday with a fresh round up of romance related goodness. In the meantime, you can still find me floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Howl at the Moon

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

On the spur of the moment, I decided to take a four-day weekend last week. I needed a quick recharge before the hullaballoo that the holiday season is, both in the real world and at the day job. And I have to say it was much needed, if for no other reason than just to not have to worry about too much for a couple of days. It will be about a month before I have another one, so hopefully, this one was recharging enough to last me until then.

Today is Howl at the Moon Day and Night Day, so it seemed appropriate to recommend some werewolf romance novels. Of course, Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert is my go-to werewolf romance recommendation because, well, it’s Talia and, thus, awesome. But I did manage to find a couple of more to recommend to help celebrate this day.

What Valeena doesn’t know is that Godwin is actually a shifter as well as the alpha of his pack, and he believes that his future mate is none other than Valeena. This is the first in a duology, so if you want more of this world, you can read Samiah’s story in For My Wolves.

Paranormal Romance Series to Start

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

There are just seven more days left in October y’all. I won’t lie; I’m super sad about that. I’m sure we can all agree that November starts the onslaught of holiday stress and oversaturation, and I’m not remotely close to the mood needed for that. That said, I have a semi-game plan ready, so maybe this year will be less stressful than the past.

Riot Recommendations

Last time, I recommended some paranormal anthologies, and this week, I am going in the complete opposite direction by recommending the first book in long-standing paranormal romance series. Because, as enjoyable as snack-bite stories are, sometimes you want to be in it for the long haul.

cove of Shadow Blade

Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass

By day, Kira is an antiquities specialist who specializes in defusing magical objects. At night, though, she is a Shadowchaser, a supernatural bounty hunter. Both vocations leave her unable to touch other living creatures or risk draining them.

When Khefar’s dagger comes across her desk, it brings the centuries-old warrior into her life, and soon a tense attraction develops. However, it also brings some sinister eyes, and they must work together to avoid meeting an untimely end.

cover of Angel's Blood

Angels’ Blood by Nalini Singh

When vampire hunter Elena is hired by Archangel Raphael, she’s surprised to discover that her target isn’t a vampire but a rogue archangel.

Another added, and unexpected danger to this job is the draw she feels towards her client. There are many reasons why she shouldn’t succumb to the attraction between them, but as they spend more time together, those become easier to ignore.

Here is a list of romance novels that feature protagonists with a disability.

And that’s all I have for you on this fine Monday morning. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Thursday with another romance round-up. In the meantime, you can still find me over on the app once known as Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then happy reading and stay hydrated!

Supernatural Romance Anthologies

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

I had a great time with one of my best gal pals at the Spooky Soirée last week! There were a lot of fantastic costumes; I got to paint a skull and walked away with Eternally Yours after “Speed Dating With a Book.” All in all, it was a great way to celebrate Friday the 13th.

It’s fall y’all and this season is the extra perfect time of the year to cozy up with an engaging book or two. Sometimes though, it can be hard to pick what to read next, and that is where TBR comes in. No matter what your preferred genre is, TBR’s Bibliologists, also known as Bibs, work to find the perfect ones for you to add to your book pile. Riot Recommendations

As mentioned, earlier, my book pick from Bookish Speed Dating was a YA anthology. In fact, a good number of books on my TBR list this month just happen to be anthologies. I just finished and adored A Night of Screams and loved all the stories included there; I highly recommend.

Anthologies can be hit or miss for readers, myself included. It’s very rare to find one where you enjoy all the included stories. They can still be very enjoyable reads, though, especially if you’re short on time and would like to get one or two quick stories in.

With that in mind, today’s recommendations are anthologies/short story collections and yes—they have a paranormal spin to them for spooky season.

My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding edited by P.N. Elrod

Weddings can be stressful enough with ‘mundane people’, let alone with the addition of supernatural creatures. Enjoy this collection of stories from some of the most well-known authors in the paranormal subgenre and their own unique take on how nuptials can go right or wrong.

cover of Burning Up

Burning Up by Angela Knight, Nalini Singh, Virginia Kantra, and Meljean Brook

In this collection of four novellas, we are introduced to a vampire warrior who is taking on demonic predators, get to visit Singh’s Psy-Changeling world, meet a solider who finds himself intrigued by his mysterious rescuer, and enter a steampunk world where a woman strikes a possibly terrifying bargain to get passage overseas.

Nora Roberts’ birthday was October 10th! Here are some book recs to help celebrate one of the most well-known and beloved names in Romancelandaia.

If you’re looking for some romances with sci-fi vibes, this last has you covered.

And that is all I have for y’all this week. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday with another edition and in the meantime you can find me still floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated.

A “Not-So-Fake” Engagement

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

How are we almost done with October yet?!?! It really seems like the month just started, and I really wanted it to last forever! Seriously, the older I get, the more October is my favorite month outside of my birthday month, even though it’s always hot as all get out then. At least we still have a few weeks left, so I’ll make sure to make the best of them!

Riot Recommendations

Keeping with the swag from earlier and romances that have a Halloween/supernatural/horror vibe, today’s recommendations are enemies-to-lovers monster romances. Yeah, that’s quite the string of words there, I know, but they are accurate for the titles listed here.

Quick reminder: as monster romances tend to be darker romances, be sure to check for the various content and trigger warnings.

The Hunted Mate by Darcy Dahlia

For years, Yara has managed to resist the siren-like call of the ocean, but when her mentor is murdered, it shakes her resolve to stay on dry land. To make matters worse, the person picked to replace her, Jack is infuriating on every level. Even as they bicker with one another, Yara finds herself being unnervingly drawn to him even though she has no idea why.

Not So Kind Regards by Clio Evans

Warts & Claws Inc. is almost like any other corporation, with the exception of being staffed by monsters who are caught in a war with their evil HR department. While Inferna finds herself very attracted to Calen, his lover just happens to be her office rival. However, sparks fly between them after a visit from one of the HR reps, and it leaves them wondering if they will survive the week to be able to see if there is a chance for all three of them to engage in a satisfying and sexy relationship.

This was a fun word association quiz, and seeing as I’m married, I’m going to say it’s fairly accurate.

I didn’t even know that Light Gothic Romance was a thing, but I’m here for it.

PSA for all non-readers with bookish partners.

Happy Friday the 13th Eve

Greetings and salutations! Welcome, or welcome back, to the Kissing Books newsletter. I’m PN Hinton, here to give you the rundown on the world of romance, including new releases, recommendations, and other entertaining ways to pass your time.

Tomorrow is Friday the 13th y’all! When I was growing up, I always liked this day for the Jason movie marathons. In hindsight though, the only one I really remember seeing was Jason Takes Manhattan, which was a lie. He spent maybe a couple of hours, max, in the Big Apple.

This year to celebrate, I am going to a “Spooky Soiree” at one of my local indies. I’m super excited for dressing up, painting skulls, and maybe walking away with a new match from speed dating with a horror novel. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on how that all turns out next week.

It’s fall y’all, and this season is the extra perfect time of the year to cozy up with an engaging book or two. Sometimes, though it can be hard to pick what to read next, and that is where TBR comes in. No matter what your preferred genre is, TBR’s Bibliologists, also known as Bibs, work to find the perfect ones for you to add to your book pile. Riot Recommendations

I don’t know about y’all, but I have thoroughly been enjoying recommending romances that are also horror-adjacent. I think the preferred term for those is horro-romance, which fits perfectly.

Now, I’m not sure if I will keep it up for the full month, but I’m going to enjoy this streak for as long as I can. And, with tomorrow being a Friday the 13th, it seems in the spirit of the season to continue with them. With that said, here are the recommendations for today.

cover of I'll Come Back For You

I’ll Come Back for You by Charish Reid

When Whitney and Helen inherit their grandmother’s house, they decide to turn it into a bed and breakfast before realizing it comes with a not-so-friendly ghost. The sisters decide to call Ghost Punters, the team behind a popular reality show, only to discover that the camera operator is Deon, Whitney’s high school crush. Before too long, their old feelings are brought to the surface, leaving them to wonder if this situation is also a good opportunity to try for a relationship. The second book in this series is coming out early next year, which means that now is the perfect time to pick this up!

Chasing Shadows by Lila Bruce

When she finds out her ailing grandmother needs help, Avery returns to the small town of Bethel Springs to help care for her. Shortly after starting her position in the Sheriff’s office, a body is found, and TV ghost hunter Cameron soon arrives, claiming to have seen the victim after she was dead. Against her better judgment, Avery agrees to team up with Cam to find the murderer before they can strike again while trying to fight the attraction for the woman who is her complete opposite in all ways.

Here are some of the upcoming romances to curl up with this fall.

And that is all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back next Monday with a fresh round up of romance related fun and in the meantime you can still find me floating around on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then happy reading and stay hydrated.
