Got Essays?

With spring in the air, I keep finding myself reaching for pop science books, personal essays, and memoirs. As I’m sure y’all know by now, I’m a sucker for personal narratives. I love prose with a strong voice and perspective that makes me think deeply about a topic. So today, we’re looking at two different nonfiction titles that are each written by writers with lots of personality to go around. But first, bookish goods!

Looking to elevate your reading life? Tailored Book Recommendations is here to help with handpicked recommendations. Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

If you love books about cults and how the mind works, Cultish is right in your wheelhouse. Through her narrative storytelling and incredible research skills, Montell takes us deep into the influence of cults and the words that help build them.

Opinions: A Decade of Arguments, Criticism, and Minding Other People’s Business by Roxane Gay

I first read Roxane Gay after her essay collection Bad Feminist hit shelves. Since then, Gay has written essays, celebrity profiles, and advice columns. Opinions includes the best of Gay’s writing, giving readers little snapshots of Gay’s life over the course of the last decade. There’s a profile of Janelle Monae describing how Afrofuturism influenced their album Dirty Computer. Gay writes about #MeToo from her perspective as a survivor of sexual assault, and pushes it further, discussing what it’s like to be well-known for being a survivor of sexual violence. In other, less serious pieces, Gay includes her delightful sense of humor and a practical take on what’s going on in the world.

Today’s pick is a regency era second-chance romance featuring straight Black characters to fit that Bridgerton-shaped hole in your heart.

Book cover of Aphrodite and the Duke by J. J. McAvoy

Aphrodite and the Duke by J. J. McAvoy

Aphrodite Du Bell feels incredibly burdened by her name: it’s a lot to live up to. Though she is incredibly beautiful and talented, she feels pressure to constantly be the most beautiful, the most talented, and the most everything. Being named after the goddess of love and beauty is a lot to ask of someone. She loves to walk about the gardens, and her mother thinks she loves to read a bit too much. Aphrodite is part of a big family of five siblings, and they are all very loving and close to each other.

Aphrodite is 22 and unmarried. She had every intention of marrying her childhood friend, Evander Eagleman, the Duke of Everely. As far as she knew, he had every intention of marrying her as well. During the season of her coming out (four years prior to the start of this book), she turned down every offer from every suitor, as she expected Evander to show up and ask for her hand. She waited and waited and he never showed. In fact, the next she heard was that he had gotten married to someone else. It is now the next eldest daughter’s turn for her coming out, and the family has insisted that Aphrodite go to London for the season with everyone to show support for her sister Hathor, who is just a giant ball of anxiety. Coincidentally, Evander has a younger sister, Verity, who is also coming out this season, and on top of that, Evander’s wife just passed away. The likelihood of Aphrodite and Evander crossing paths is incredibly high. The family is torn on this whole situation. Aphrodite’s mother, who is also Evander’s godmother, is depending on them running into each other and making up and getting married. Damon, Aphrodite’s older brother, is very much against it and does not want his sister to get hurt yet again.

While Evander is the Duke of an estate, he and Verity have had multiple traumatic experiences growing up due to their careless, abusive, and now deceased father and the father’s second wife, who was his mistress and not from their circles. This book went to some places that I did not expect it to go, and it’s told from multiple viewpoints. There is definitely sex on the page, which is both steamy and charming. While there is some trauma talked about in the book, it isn’t racism-based trauma, and racism is hardly a theme in this book, if at all. Content warnings for physical and verbal abuse, including child abuse, discussion of suicide, and violence.

That’s it for now, book-lovers!

Last weekend, I attended a discussion between Kelis Rowe and Farrah Rochon at a local bookstore where they talked about Farrah’s latest YA release, Fates Be Changed. This new Twisted Tale presents a world where Brave‘s Merida took the cake intended for her mother and the drastic changes this seemingly small change caused. I had a great time listening to these two wonderfully talented authors discuss their love of Disney, the writing process, and everything in between. In addition to Farrah’s book, I picked up Kelis’s YA debut Finding Jupiter. All in all, it was a good bookish weekend for me!

Tomorrow is Grilled Cheese Day! Believe it or not, growing up, I didn’t eat a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches. As an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for them, especially the “fancy” ones. I recently ate a green apple and Muenster sandwich that was beyond amazing.

That said, there aren’t a lot of romances dedicated to the awesomeness of grilled cheese. The only one I can think of offhand is The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, which was also the first book that Trisha and Jess picked this year for the When in Romance book club. However, regular readers know how much I love my foodie romances, which is what I decided to focus on for today’s recommendations. Bon appétit!!

*A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin

This has such a unique magic system that goes so well with its bloody competition. In it, Ning is still gripped by guilt surrounding her mother’s death, and now, the same poison tea that killed her mother may also take her sister, Shu. The only way Ning can think to save her sister’s life is to enter the kingdom’s magical tea-brewing competition; but to win, she’ll have to contend with backstabbers, messy court politics, and handsome strangers.

Thieves’ Gambit by Kayvion Lewis

This has a lot going on…in the way that we like, of course. Here, 17-year-old Ross Quest is a master thief prodigy, descended from a long line of thieves. Thing is, she just wants to live a normal teen life, free of the odd trappings of her heisting family. But then her mother’s life is threatened, and the only way for her to save her that she can see is to enter the Thieves’ Gambit, a dangerous international heisting competition. The plot thickens, of course, once we learn that among her competitors is a smooth-talking cutie…

Book Riot Recommends

Hi, welcome to everyone’s favorite segment of Book Radar called Book Riot Recommends. This is where I’ll talk to you about all the books I’m reading, the books I’m loving, and the books I can’t wait to read and love in the near future. I think you’re going to love them too!

Can’t Wait for This One!

the city in glass book cover

The City in Glass by Nghi Vo (Tordotcom, October 1)

If you haven’t picked up a Nghi Vo novel yet, here’s what you can expect: inventive and thought-provoking speculative fiction. Beautiful writing. Stories that redefine genre expectations. You think you know what you’re getting into, but you will be surprised. And that’s why I can’t wait for Nghi Vo’s latest, The City in Glass, coming out this fall.

Set in the fantasy city of Azril, The City in Glass is the story of an immortal demon named Vitrine. After the city is burned to the ground, Vitrine is left to mourn everything lost, with nothing but a book containing the names of those now gone and an angel that is now bound to her. Together, angel and demon will discover the secrets of Azril and rebuild the city together. But when war threatens to destroy everything they’ve built, Vitrine and her angel must work together to protect the city they’ve grown to love so much.

This is a story of rage, love, grief, and redemption. I have complete faith in Nghi Vo’s ability to build a compelling fantasy world in only 224 pages (we love a short fantasy novel — what a breath of fresh air). And I can’t wait to read this one!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“Man mistakes his own experiences as the canvas on which all truths are drawn.”

The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

You always have to share when two cats are chilling out together. Remy has such little brother energy, though. It’s very clear Murray was sitting here first and then Remy decided to sidle up next to him. Just look at who is relaxed here and who is a little unsettled, waiting for approval.

And that’s all for today, friends! See you Monday! Happy reading this weekend!
