Get an Annotated Copy of Aiden Thomas’ Latest Book and More Book Radar!

Dear Book Friends,

With every passing day, I feel more and more stressed out. Not just because personally, I’m going through a big move but also because… well… *gestures at the world* Look at this place. This year, as an American, 4th of July feels less celebratory for me than ever before as I keep finding less and less to love about this country. So while I’m moving, I’m thinking to myself can I really move far enough? Is there another planet I can move to and just start over? Is anyone else feeling this way? I hate to be negative and start our week on that kind of note, but hey, I’m just trying to be real with y’all. Yes, even though I’m moving north, I’m still going to say “y’all.” Anyway, you wanna hear about books?

why didn't you tell me book cover

Why Didn’t You Tell Me? by Carmen Rita Wong (Crown Publishing Group, July 12)

I think it’s fair to say that a good memoir about a strained mother/daughter relationship is going to hook me every time. Some mother/daughter memoirs that I’ve loved? Adrienne Brodeur’s Wild Game comes to mind. And of course, Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. And yes, let’s go ahead and add Carmen Rita Wong’s Why Didn’t You Tell Me? to the list, because this one hooked me, too.

Carmen Rita Wong grew up searching for a sense of belonging, whether it was her childhood in Harlem surrounded by Latina women like her mother or among the exclusively white people she lived amongst in New Hampshire, after her mother married her stepfather Charlie.

Carmen grew up believing that her father was a Chinese hustler named Peter Wong, whom her mother was forced to marry for a green card. But as her mother was dying of cancer, Charlier confessed to Carmen that he was in fact her real father. In fact, neither of these things were true, as Carmen would find out after taking a DNA test.

With her mother gone, Carmen feels like she’ll never get answers to who she is or where she belongs. And worst of all, she’ll never understand why her mother didn’t tell her the truth. This memoir follows Carmen’s search for understanding as she digs into the hidden side of her mother that she never had the chance to know while her mother was alive.

Monday Memes

This is often me when I’m trying to tell you all about a book I loved. Why is it so much easier to write about stuff you hate? Is hate truly stronger than love?

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

We’re finishing off Monday strong with an action shot of the two brothers bathing one another. Or I guess Remy is doing most of the bathing in this case. But I think Murray is enjoying it? He seems very relaxed.

And that just about wraps up Book Radar for today. I hope you’re staying safe and you’re doing as well as you can be under our current circumstances. Remember to breathe.

Books You Might’ve Missed in 2022 So Far

I shared some of my favorite and most-anticipated books last week. Now this week, let’s take a look back at some of the smaller press books that came out in the first half of 2022 that might be under your radar:

Close-Up by Michelle Herman — If you love a story about complex family relationships and friendships with beautifully drawn characters, pick this one up.

Little Foxes Took Up Matches by Katya Kazbek — A stunning debut novel that reads like a modern folktale. A coming-of-age story told with empathy and humor and just a pinch of magic.

Constellations of Eve by Abbigail Nguyen Rosewood — This novel is one love story, told three different ways. With each life-altering event, this love story fractures and moves in different directions, and we follow each possible path.

When I Sing, Mountains Dance by Irene Solà — One of my personal favorite titles of the year and an unmissable novel in translation told through multiple perspectives. This one is just as much about the setting and the land as it is about the characters.

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

As promised, I’m back with roundup #2 of “Mid Year Book Freakout Tag” videos! These includes some of my fave BookTubers. I hope you enjoy them!

What I’m Watching This Weekend

In times of stress, I return to my forever favorite, Community. If you haven’t watched this gem yet, it’s on Netflix and Hulu. If you have watched it, watch it again with me! It’s the funniest show ever, and it have some of my favorite people in it, including Alison Brie and Donald Glover.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

2 cats on a cat tree beneath a cat painting

Well here’s a new one: a cat picture within a cat picture. Here’s Remy and Murray chilling in a cat tree. And above them? That’s a painting I painted of my sweet kitty Josie Monkey Puddingston, who was my cat and best buddy for thirteen wonderful years. Now he watches over the kitty community with wisdom and dignity.

I know. I’m a super talented painter. You don’t have to tell me. I went into the wrong business. I should have become a cat portrait artist.

And on that (sarcastic) note, I will bid you goodbye! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

We get these cardboard flats to carry groceries, and started playing a game to see how many we could stack up before he wouldn’t climb inside. Turns out, it’s never too many. In fact, the ones on the bottom have started to rip under the weight, lol.

That’s it for me today! It was fun sitting in for Emily today. It has been a while since I went hunting for book news. I will see you around the internet!

book cover for sundial

So I’ve read a fair amount of books so far this year. Not as many as I was hoping I’d get to at this point in the year. Look, in case I haven’t made it clear, I hate summer. That’s all there is to it. I know that’s a hot take (pun intended), but it is what it is. Anyhow, let’s talk books. Something we can all (mostly) agree on.

Prepare Your Shelves!

just like home book cover

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey (Tor Books, July 19)

There are authors who can do one genre really, really well. And then there are authors like Sarah Gailey who seem to just nail whatever genre they decide to tackle. Gailey has written fantasy, mystery, western, sci-fi… and now Just Like Home is their entry into the world of horror. And if you’re wondering how horror this book is… it is legitimately scary. And bizarre. But isn’t the best horror fiction also super weird?

When Vera was a child, her father was arrested for being a serial killer and hiding the dead bodies in their house. Years have passed, and Vera hasn’t been back to her childhood home since she became estranged from her mother. But when her sick mother asks her to return, Vera obeys, despite the hard feelings, difficult memories, and even the fact that now Vera’s mother is renting out the home to true crime fanatics who want to be closer to the action. Still, something draws Vera back to the house. And when she starts to discover notes around the house that were written in her father’s handwriting, she wonders if the house is trying to send her a message.

I mentioned in the beginning of the year that Just Like Home was one of my most-anticipated books of the year, and this one definitely does not disappoint. So horror fans, prepare your shelves ASAP, because this one is coming at you on July 19th. You won’t be able to stop thinking about it. Mostly you’ll be asking yourself, “what the heck did I just read?” In a good way!

Can’t Wait for This One!

Don’t Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones (Gallery/Saga Press, February 7 2023)

Well, friends, I have been hyping this book ever since it was first announced last October, but since its release date was pushed back from fall 2022 to February 2023, I wanted to wait a little while to give you all a full write up explaining why exactly this one is at the top of my must-read list. February is still months and months and months away, but I am ready to talk to y’all about this book right now.

Don’t Fear the Reaper is the sequel to Stephen Graham Jones’ 2021 novel My Heart is a Chainsaw. My Heart is a Chainsaw was one of my most anticipated books of that year, and it did not disappoint. Even if slashers aren’t normally your thing, you should give this one a try. Stephen Graham Jones’ writing is always smart and intense and, yes, scary. But what made My Heart is a Chainsaw really stand out for me was the voice of the protagonist, Jade, who was endearing and vulnerable and hilarious and, yes, sometimes even annoying. But that just added more authenticity to her teen voice.

In Don’t Fear the Reaper, Jade is back. This book is set four years after the events of the first novel, so I’m curious to see how she has changed and grown since her senior year of high school. Jade is returning back to her rural lake town of Proofrock. On that very same day, convicted Indigenous serial killer Dark Mill South escapes from his prison transfer due to a blizzard. Dark Mill South is coming to Proofrock for his own reasons, to complete his revenge killings for the thirty-eight Dakota men who were hanged in 1862.

Apparently, this book is the second novel in The Lake Witch Trilogy. And you know what that means. We’re going to have another book in this series to look forward to very, very soon. Get ready for me to start getting excited about that one as soon as I finish this one!

Don’t forget you can get three free audiobooks at Audiobooks.com with a free trial!

Words of Literary Wisdom

“The thing about losing someone is that it doesn’t happen just once. It happens every time you do something great you wish they could see, every time you’re stuck and you need advice. Every time you fail. It erodes your sense of normal, and what grows back is decidedly not normal, and yet you still have to figure out how to trudge forward.”

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

Of course, you know I had to acknowledge the Internet backlash against James Patterson and his comments about how hard it is to be a white person.

If you’ve somehow missed this, here’s a rundown of what James Patterson said last weekend. Of course, there was an immediate response from the book community on Twitter. Needless to say, Patterson’s comments did not go over well. And yes, the author has since apologized for the remarks, but I’m not sure you can put that racist genie back in the bottle, Jimmy. My heart does go out to the struggle that millionaire white men go through every day.

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Well, I haven’t yet watched the new season of Stranger Things. Why? Because Ben and I are rewatching the first three seasons before we dive into Season 4. So no spoilers! I’ve been trying to avoid all Stranger Things talk. After all, we’re still on our Season 1 rewatch right now, so give us time!

JUSTICE FOR BARB!

And Here’s A Cat Picture

tuxedo cat and orange cat on a cat tree

So since I’ve been told by multiple people that this photo should be Murray and Remy’s album cover, I have to ask. What’s the name of their band? What kind of music is it? And what’s the name of this album? Let me know.

If you’re wondering about my sweet little Cersei, she’s still on the mend. Her ankle is doing better, but the medicine is making her feel sick, so she’s not really wanting to eat now. Anyway, hopefully I’ll have better news to report next time.

For now, I hope you have a great weekend, and I’ll talk to you next week!

Prepare Your Shelves!

the darkness of others book cover

The Darkness of Others by Care Holahan (Grand Central Publishing, August 23rd)

It’s summer, which means I’m suddenly especially hungry for fast-paced thrillers and easy-to-read-by-the-pool rom coms. Based on the cover and title of this one, I’ll give you one guess which category The Darkness of Others falls into. Or maybe you know already because you’re familiar with the name Cat Holahan, the bestselling author of Lies She Told and Her Three Lives.

Still stumped? Yes, The Darkness of Others is a thriller. Psychiatrist Imani Banks and her restauranteur husband Philip are living in a posh townhouse in Brooklyn Heights. Meanwhile, Tonya Sayre moves to Manhattan with dreams of becoming a Broadway star, but instead she’s working in a restaurant and struggling to support her teen daughter Layla. After Philip’s restaurant closes due to the pandemic lockdown, he and Imani decide to let Tonya and Layla rent their extra rooms. But Tonya begins skipping payments, and Imani becomes concerned that Tonya may be responsible for the death of their neighbors. Evicting someone during a lockdown is tricky, though, even when you think that person might be a murderer.

Oh yeah, you heard that right. This book addresses the fact that there is a pandemic and that there were lockdowns. I know some people are still feeling a little bit iffy about lockdown-related fiction, but I feel like it’s even weirder if we don’t acknowledge it at all. For thrillers especially, the claustrophobia created by a pandemic and a lockdown are kind of too perfect (in a fictional sense, not IRL) to ignore. So with all of that in mind, prepare your shelves. This one’s out in late August.

Monday Memes

Okay here’s that Kate Middleton meme everyone is loving right now… but make it bookish.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

Y’all know I’m just watching Love Island every day now, so that’s what’s making me happy. Watching Love Island. Texting my friends about Love Island. Saying Love Island things like “I’ve got a text!” and “I’m loyal, babe,” and “You’re 100% my type on paper.”

If you don’t watch Love Island, like… what even do you do in the summer?

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

sad calico cat

Friends and fellow cat lovers, I need everyone to send my sweet Cersei their well wishes right now. My poor angel girl hurt her ankle, and she’s going to be recovering for the next couple of weeks.

I really hate when cats are in pain, because there’s really no way to tell them why this is happening to them. I wish I could assure her we’re doing everything we can to make her feel better as soon as possible! We love her so much.

So anyway, keep my sweet girl in your thoughts this week. Hopefully she’ll be feeling back to new soon enough.

Other than that, thanks so much for reading. And I hope you have a wonderful week.

Can’t Wait for This One

jackal book cover

Jackal by Erin E. Adams (Ballantine, October 4th)

October is my favorite time of the year. It’s my birthday month, for one, and it’s also that time of year where the weather starts getting cooler. But all that aside, October is the month where is finally socially acceptable to be all in on scary stuff. That means October is prime time for reading creepy horror novels and spine-tingling thrillers. That’s where this book comes in. Jackal is going to be one of the most exciting thrillers you’ll read this fall, and it’s the perfect read for the perfect month of the year.

As a Black woman, Liz Rocher doesn’t have the fondest memories of her predominantly white hometown. But since her best friend is getting married, Liz reluctantly returns to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, already preparing herself for the worst. But nothing could have prepared her for what happens on the day of the wedding, when the bride’s daughter Caroline goes missing.

As the search for Caroline begins, Liz realizes she’s seen this before. Years ago, Keisha Woodson, the only other Black girl in school, also disappeared in a similar manner. This can’t be a coincidence, and as Liz begins to uncover her town’s past, she discovers a horrifying secret. Young Black girls have been going missing in this town—in these woods—for years. No one has ever done anything about it. And now the evil in the woods is creeping closer.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must ask yourself, Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”

And here’s Time’s list. Book Riot’s very own list is coming up soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

This was Phantom’s favorite sleeping space, in this little bread basket bed in the sunlight. Now Remy has adopted it. Of course Remy isn’t replacing Phantom at all. And that’s all I have for you today, friends. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Prepare Your Shelves!

the force of such beauty book cover

The Force of Such Beauty by Barbara Bourland (Dutton, July 19)

Okay, this book sounds so incredibly unhinged in the best way, and I’ve been staring at this cover for months now, trying to decide how I feel about it (again, in the best way). And now this one is finally coming out next month, so it is time, friends, for us to collectively prepare our shelves. This seems like one people will be talking about, for sure.

So, here’s the deal. When former marathon runner Caroline meets Finn, the handsome prince of a small European kingdom, she feels like she’s finally fulfilling her destiny. After all, she’s disciplined, accustomed to public attention, and prepared to smile and wave on command. But entering a life of royalty is much more than Caroline bargained for. And it’s a bargain that might be impossible to undo. This novel is in part inspired by the true story of Princess Charlene of Monaco, who tried to escape her marriage to Prince Albert three times before eventually giving in and marrying him.

For some reason, the concept of royalty is still fascinating to me, despite the fact that I fully realize how problematic it is. Maybe it’s because we all privately dream of how nice it would be to be rich and pampered. Or, at least, those of us with Libra placements do. Anyway, it seems like this novel is going for an interesting feminist critique of royalty and many young girls’ dreams of growing up to discover they’ve secretly been a princess all along. I’m excited to read and find out!

And here’s my favorite American Girl doll, Felicity.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

Seriously, I feel like all I’ve been doing is reading this week, so the main thing that’s been making me happy is books. But okay, here’s a random recommendation. If you’re looking for a vegan protein bar, I’ve been loving the No Cow chocolate sprinkled donut bars. You’re welcome.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Look at these two good brothers! Becoming friends! Remy has no fear and is ready to be friends with all of the cats. As you can see, Murray is a little more cautious. As for Cersei? Yeah she’s not interested. Like. At all.

But anyway. To cat friendship!

And on that note, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, and I’ll catch you back here on Thursday. Bye, friends!

blood and moonlight cover

Blood and Moonlight by Erin Beaty (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, June 28th)

Generally speaking, I feel like I read a fair amount of young adult literature. But looking at my stats for the year so far—thanks to our very own Tirzah Price’s awesome reading log—I’ve noticed I haven’t read nearly as much YA this year as I normally do. So, yes, on a personal note, that realization has made me feel especially hungry for new YA books this summer, and Blood and Moonlight is right at the top of my TBR list. Are you excited to read some good YA this summer too? Then get ready to prepare your shelves for this genre-bending YA thriller.

Blood and Moonlight is set in the medieval city of Collis, where Catrin lives as a spire watching over the city from the holy Sanctum. Catrin is an orphan girl with unique skills. Only she can spot the building’s construction flaws before they turn deadly. But that’s not all Catrin witnesses in her tower above the city. When Catrin witnesses a murderer running away from the scene of the crime, she suddenly finds herself in danger’s way, as she is the only witness to a murderer who is sure to strike again.

Then there’s Simon, the brilliant and enigmatic man who has been assigned to capture the killer. His insights into the mind of a murderer are frighteningly accurate. Soon, Catrin finds herself caught between murderer and detective while still trying to hide her own supernatural secret: her powers gifted to her by the moon. And while these powers are destined to make Catrin an outcast, they might also be the only thing protecting her from becoming the murderer’s next victim.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“History, memory is by definition fiction. Once an event is no longer present, but remembered, it is narrative. And we can choose the narratives we tell—about our own lives, our own stories, our own relationships. We can choose the chapters we give meaning.”

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle

What I’m Watching This Weekend

It’s been a while since I chatted with you all about what I’ve been watching, mostly because I’ve been so busy settling in with the new cat and getting ready for a big cross-country move. But I am watching some things this weekend. As an avid Ewan McGregor fan (my favorite movie of all time is Moulin Rouge), I’m so excited that the Obi Wan Kenobi show has finally dropped on Disney+, so I plan to catch up on that this weekend.

I’ve avoided spoilers up until this point, so I’m excited to dive in with zero expectations (aside from, you know, continuing to love everything Ewan McGregor does).

Are you watching? Would love to hear your thoughts… after the weekend. Give me time to catch up.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

tuxedo cat relaxing in cat bed

Remy is really making himself right at home!

I have to share with everyone that tonight, Murray lovingly bathed Remy for the first time. I tried to be cool about it because I didn’t want the cats to think it was that big of a deal, but inside I was throwing a huge party. I really, really want these cats to become buds.

Anyway, that’s all for now! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll catch you back here on Monday, I hope.
