Good Thursday to you, Book Friends!

Anyone a big fan of Thursdays? I feel like Fridays get all the glory, but there’s something to be said about a good Thursday. After all, I was born on a Thursday. So happy Thursday!

We’ve got a fun weekend coming up, I think. Valentine’s Day is coming up, which means Galentine’s Day is this weekend, and the Super Bowl is on Sunday too. And if you’re not super excited about football, then maybe you’ll be excited to know Amazon Studios will release the first teaser trailer for its long-awaited The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series during Super Bowl LVI on Sunday. Or maybe you’re a Jordan Peele fan like me, and you’re looking forward to this trailer for Nope, which is also being released this weekend. Yes, Jordan Peele is so big now that he gets trailers for his trailers. I’m here for it.

Not excited about any of that? Well, get excited for books then. I’ve got book stuff for you.

not good for maidens book cover

Not Good for Maidens by Tori Bovalino (Page Street, May 3, 2022)

Okay, so. Something you should know about me. I studied Victorian Literature in grad school, and I have always loved “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti. It is by far one of my favorite poems of all time. So when I heard there was a sapphic YA horror-fantasy retelling of this amazing book coming out soon? Welp. Shut up and take my money.

I know I just said this book is a queer retelling of “Goblin Market,” but just to be clear, the original “Goblin Market” is pretty queer. So author Tori Bovalino doesn’t have to totally reinvent the story to make this a queer story. She’s just highlighting it, focusing on it, shining a spotlight on it. Which we love. We are here for it. By we I mean me. But you should be too.

If you’re unfamiliar with “Goblin Market,” click above and read the poem. And then get excited. No Good for Maidens is the story of Lou, who never believed in superstitions or magic. Then her teenage aunt Neela is kidnapped and taken to the Goblin Market. Lou has only heard stories of the Goblin Market as a place full of dark temptation for any human who wanders there. In order to save Neela, Lou knows she will have to learn spells and tricks to keep her safe as she navigates the market. And she only has three days to do it before the market takes Neela forever.

We’re all members of the book community, and there’s something we need to do right now to help our community. As you’ve probably read, book bans are on the rise. But we don’t have to just sit back and watch it happen. There are ways we can take action. A few months ago, our very own Kelly at Book Riot posted this helpful guide for how to take action against book banning. You could also consider starting your own banned book club, just like these teens. The ALA also provides information on their website all about how to fight against bans and censorship.

kaikeyi book cover

Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel (Redhook, April 26th)

Not enough people are talking about this one yet. But when it comes out, I think this is going to be the book everyone’s talking about. Fans of feminist retellings of mythology will have to pick this one up. And even if that’s not your thing yet, it probably will be after you read this book.

Kaikeyi is a retelling of the Indian epic Ramayana from Queen Kaikeyi’s perspective. As a child, Kaikeyi is the only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, raised on stories about benevolent and powerful gods. And yet when Kaikeyi calls upon the Gods for help rescue her from a life where she’s only valued for her eligibility for marriage, no Gods answer her. In search of independence, Kaikeyi becomes a powerful warrior and diplomat, determined to create a world where she and women like her are respected. Unfortunately the path Kaikeyi has chosen for herself has disrupted the will of the gods, and there will be consequences.

Need more reasons to pick this debut novel up? For one, Kaikeyi is asexual, and I love that we’re starting to see more books with nuanced asexual representation. Also, while we’ve seen plenty of retellings of Western fairy tales and mythology, I feel like we don’t get as many reimaginings of classic works like Ramayana (note: there are some out there though, and if you’re curious about this book, and want to read more, this is a a good list!). Kaikeyi will be out from Redhook in April!

If you’re following BookTok, it’s probably no surprise to you that BookTok is giving bookstores a major boost. At The New Future conference on January 28th, Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt said the “thrilling” growth of BookTok is encouraging more young people to buy from physical bookshops. Now bookshops are getting in on the action and creating their own BookTok accounts. As major booksellers start jumping on the BookTok train, will it ruin the magic? I guess only time will tell!

NONA THE NINTH Cover is Revealed and More Book Radar!

Happy Monday, Book Friends!

Please forgive me as I reflect on the passing of time once again. January is just such a weird time of year. I feel like Januarys always last five hundred days, and then the rest of the year always goes by so quickly. So as we get ready to start February, in the back of my head, I’m thinking, “Dang, so it’s basically almost 2023 now.” Does anyone else feel this way?

And how did everyone’s reading go for the first month of 2022? I did pretty okay. I feel like I read a good mix of genres and I read a nice amount of books. In terms of the Goodreads challenge, I’m currently “on track,” which is fine I guess. There’s something really satisfying about seeing that tracker say, “You’re ahead by X amount of books.” But maybe that will come in February! Anyway, feel free to send me a message and let me know about your month. What did you read? What did you love? What did you not love so much? What are you looking forward to February?

Okay rants and reflections over. Let’s talk books!

cover of The Verifiers by Jane Pek

The Verifiers by Jane Pek (Vintage, February 22)

In February, you’re going to meet a new amateur sleuth that you’ll absolutely love. Jane Pek’s debut novel The Verifiers is the story of Claudia Lin. Claudia is a lit lover just like all of us. She’s obsessed with mystery novels, and she wrote her senior thesis on Jane Austen. Now, Claudia believes she’s landed her ideal job. She’s just been recruited by Veracity, a referral-only online dating detective agency. But when one of the agency’s clients goes missing, Claudia finds herself breaking the rules to dive deep into the secret world of people’s online lives and corporate deceit.

There’s so much to love about this unique mystery story. First and foremost, there’s Claudia, a snarky twenty-something Chinese-American lesbian with a less-than-perfect family life. This novel could just be a character-driven story about Claudia and her personal life, and that by itself would be a compelling read. And yes, on some level, this book is a character-driven novel about Claudia’s personal struggles. But then on top of that, The Verifiers is a page-turning mystery. This book also examines the experience of dating in the age of apps and social media, what it’s like to be an immigrant in America, and more.

Could The Verifiers be the first book in a new and exciting amateur sleuth series? I certainly hope so!

My friend sent me this Monday Meme, because apparently this one has me written all over it. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows I had help finding this one!

Anyway, if you’re currently downing in a pile of unread books but you’re still looking to buy more, this one’s for you.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

Mardi Gras is coming, which means it’s King Cake Season in this part of the United States. And we’re totally obsessed with king cakes in this house. Never had a king cake? No problem. You can actually order them online and have them delivered to your home. After conducting a highly scientific king cake taste test, my very qualified King Cake Taste Testers have reached a decision, and the best place to get king cakes? Gambino’s Bakery.

Are you more interested in making a king cake for yourself? I love that can-do attitude. My mom makes a really delicious king cake. And while I don’t know her recipe, I think this one looks pretty great.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

calico cat napping near stuffed animals

Well this is awkward. I thought I was going to share a cat picture as always. But when I went to take Cersei’s picture, all I saw was this pile of stuff animals. Definitely no cats to see here. No cats at all.

Sorry everyone. I know you came here for cats, but this is what I have for you today.

Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful week! See you Thursday!

Can’t Wait for This One

the last housewife book cover

The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead (Sourcebooks, August 16)

First of all, here’s another cover that I’m completely obsessed with. Really, can I hang this on my wall somewhere? Because it’s gorgeous. Second of all, I’ve heard such wonderful things about Ashley Winstead’s 2021 novel In My Dreams I Hold A Knife, but no, I have not read it yet. Should I pick that one up while I wait for this one? Let me know. Oh, and third of all, Ashley Winstead has not one but TWO books coming out this year. I am so jealous of people who can write this much. Teach me your ways, Ashley Winstead.

The first novel coming from Winstead this year is a romance novel, Fool Me Once, which will hit shelves in April. And yes, I have that one on my to-read list as well. But for now, let’s focus on this culty thriller novel we can expect out in August. Because aside from having a stunning cover, this book also sounds really, really phenomenal.

While in college in New York, Shay Evans and her friends got involved in a cult. By her senior year, Shay and her friend Laurel were the only ones who were able to get out. Now eight years have passed, and Shay is trying to live a normal domestic life in a Texas suburb. But when news reaches her that Laurel has died, Shay begins to suspect that she hasn’t been able to leave the cult behind entirely. This suspenseful thriller is going to be perfect for those fascinated by cult stories and true crime podcasts.

Words of Literary Wisdom

content warning: The quote below contains a derogatory queer term. It is not used in a way to cause harm but to point out the dissonance between how things were and how we remember them, but I wanted to point it out.

“Rampant nostalgia has romanticized the nineties, buffing over its rough spots, looking past lingering wounds… After the spirit of the riot grrrl got co-opted by marketing, the slogan “girl power” became plastered on T-shirts and stickers, endorsed by the Spice Girls, sold on billboards and ads. Meanwhile the media routinely described the nation’s First Daughter as “homely” and “ugly,” SNL lampooned Janet Reno as a big ugly dyke, and the entire nation, it seemed, collaborated in slut-shaming and fat-shaming Monica Lewinsky. Lilith Fair was dismissed as an ‘estrogenfest’ of ‘feminazis.’ The few characters of size on television included Roseanne, who was derided as disgusting by mainstream America, and Oprah, who was eternally losing weight.”

the paradox hotel book cover

The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart (Ballantine Books, February 22)

The Paradox Hotel is going to be a book that’s going to ring a lot of bells for a lot of people. Time travel. Locked room mystery. Ghosts. Truly this book has a little something for everyone, If you’re not normally a sci-fi reader, this novel is compelling enough on a mystery/thriller level. If you don’t normally pick up whodunits, the sci-fi/fantasy elements in this will grab you and keep you reading. Anyway, you get the idea!

The Paradox Hotel is not your average, run-of-the-mill hotel. This is the place where super wealthy people come to stay on their way towards the most exciting new kind of tourism: time travel. The Paradox Hotel is close to the time port where people can pay to take “flights” to different times in the past. Of course, being so close to a time port means sometimes strange things happen in the hotel. Clocks run backwards. Ghosts roam the halls.

But as a blizzard rolls in towards the hotel, everything is about to get stranger. The time port is having an odd reaction to the weather changes, and flights have been delayed until further notice. Now everyone is stuck at the hotel. And now… there is a murderer on the loose.

Or is there? For some reason, only January Cole, who runs security at the hotel, can see the dead body. And as guests at the hotel become targets, the killer seems to be invisible. It may all seem impossible, but anything is possible at the Paradox Hotel, where time is turned inside out and the past is waiting around every corner.

True story. I bought Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi three times because I was so excited about reading it, and also I forgot that I’d already bought it. Three times. So this meme is for me and anyone else who can relate.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

You might be wondering why I’m reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf again. Or, I don’t know, maybe you don’t notice these things and that would be totally normal too. But I thought I should explain. Way back when that book first came out, I made my husband Ben buy it because I was 100% certain he would love it even though I hadn’t read it yet, just because I like Marlon James’ other work and I know how Ben feels about fantasy. He read it and loved it (hey, I’m good at recommending books). But that was a while ago!

Now with Moon Witch, Spider King coming out in a few months, it’s time for Ben to get a little refresher on the first book in the series. And I like it when people read to me. So we’re going to read the book together. He’s going to read it aloud and I’m going to relax and listen.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, my parents used to read to me every night before bed, and it was really nice! I don’t know why we as adults don’t do this for each other. I guess we have audiobooks, but there’s something really fun and communal about reading to each other every now and then. Sure, it’s probably going to take us a long time to get through the book this way, but we’ll get to savor it and spend some time together. Is this weird? I think it’s going to be fun. Anyway, maybe give it a try if it sounds appealing to you!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

cat on yoga mat

So you know how I said I’ve been doing yoga at home this month? Well, I haven’t been doing it alone. I usually have at least one cat friend join me. For this day of yoga, we’ve got Murray. What would we call this yoga pose he’s doing? Stripey orange kitty pose? Let me know if you have any ideas.

And that’s all I’ve got for you today! I hope your day is wonderful. Stay hydrated. Wear SPF. Remember to get up and move around a little bit, if you can!

Another Thursday, which means time to plan out our weekend reading goals. I have several books I’m planning on finishing this weekend. Additionally, as I mentioned on Monday, I’m checking out a lot of the Sundance movies this weekend. And… I also just started watching Station Eleven, so I’ll let you know how that goes. I feel like watching that show counts as a reading goal because it’s based on a book I have read. That’s how that works, right? Anyway, I hope your weekend is a restful one if that’s what you need and a productive one if that’s your goal. In the meantime, as we wait for the weekend to roll around, here are some book things for you to read about.

circling back to you book cover

Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu (Avon, July 15th)

It’s been a while since I hyped up an upcoming romance novel, so it seemed like it was right about time. And now that it’s January and we’re all back to work—you know, circling back, touching base, and stuff—it seems like a good time to start looking ahead to an office romance coming out later this year.

Enter Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu. This book has one of my absolute favorite romance tropes: fake dating. Even though I have never, ever seen fake dating happen in real life and it’s totally bizarre, I absolutely eat it up in romance stories. Are you with me? Great. This is the story of Cadence Lim, who has worked her way up the corporate ladder at Prism Realty. Her best friend at work is Matt Escanilla, a top broker who is forever single. When a business trip lands both Matt and Cadence in their hometown, Matt asks Cadence for a little help. He needs her to pretend to be his girlfriend for a family gathering. Cadence agrees, and this trips forces the two to see each other in a different light, in more ways than one.

If Julie Tieu’s name seems familiar, that might be because everyone has been talking about her debut novel The Donut Trap that came out at the end of 2021. The Donut Trap was a romance novel that was delightfully cute, funny, and just a sweet (pun intended) read. Circling Back to You is a humorous romance in the same vein that I think people are going to love.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“You reach a point where you realize that your life must go on regardless. You choose to live or you choose to die. But then there are moments, things that you see, something funny on the street or or a good joke that you hear, a television program that you want to share, and it makes you miss the person who’s gone terribly and then it’s not grief at all, it’s more a sort of bitterness at the world for taking them away from you.”

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

You know I like to keep y’all informed about upcoming Read-a-thons when I think they may be of interest to you. And here’s one that I’m personally planning on participating in for the month of February. It’s Blackathon, a month-long readathon hosted by multiple YouTubers that celebrates Black voices in literature.

cover image The Perfect Ruin

This year, Blackathon has four teams covering four different genres, with a different Youtuber leading each genre. Each team will have three reading prompts and a group read. Blackathon will also include Instagram challenges, Neflix parties, and more. You can get all of the details about Blackathon here.

I will be joining Team Thriller, hosted by Jesse over at Bowties and Books. You can watch their video about the challenge here. The group read for Team Thriller is going to be The Perfect Ruin by Shanora WIlliams. So feel free to read that along with me in the month of February, even if you choose not to participate in any other parts of the readathon. There are also teams for romance, literary fiction, and sci-fi/fantasy if those are more your speed. And if you do end up participating, I’d love to hear about what you’re reading!

Your Weekend Reading Soundtrack

This weekend, why not watch Station Eleven with me instead of listening to music? TV can be enriching too!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

black cat with long arm

I love Phantom’s beautifully outstretched arm here. When he does this, I just want to take his paw in my hand and say, “Nice to meet you, sir!”

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for you this week! Have a great one! Don’t wait until the weekend to get enough hours of sleep! Oh, and tell your friends how much they mean to you!

the violence book cover

The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson (Del Ray Books, February 1)

Delilah S. Dawson is a comic book writer, a children’s/middle grade author, and she writes adult novels too. Like the author herself, The Violence, Dawson’s latest novel, is doing a whole lot of things. It’s science fiction, it’s dystopian, it’s social commentary, it’s a thriller, it’s horror… and as the title suggests, it’s very, very bloody and violent. So those who get a little squeamish when it comes to gore, proceed with caution. Trigger warnings for many things, including domestic violence, torture, and abuse. The author does include a note about the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, so maybe take a look at that before reading if you’re concerned this book might not be for you.

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way. What is The Violence about? This book is set in a near future where the world is hit with an all new pandemic. The Violence is spread by mosquitoes, and once you’re infected, you’re filled will an unrelenting desire to kill. Once the infected have killed, they snap out of their trance and are completely horrified by the chaos they have caused.

For most people, this sounds like a nightmare. But for Chelsea Martin, The Violence might just be her only means of escape. From the outside, it appears as if Chelsea lives a perfect life with her perfect husband and two daughters. But her beautiful home is actually a prison. Her husband holds her captive and has taken away her every last freedom. Will she be able to use the spread of the violence to rescue herself and protect her daughters?

The Violence is a page-turning thriller that also offers up commentary on the politics of pandemics, which might hit too close to home for some at the moment. Especially because this book directly addresses the COVID-19 pandemic. But for me? It’s cathartic to read about this kind of thing. In addition to the social commentary and the thrilling story, Dawson’s characters are expertly drawn and felt incredibly real. Of course this makes the tense moments feel even more unbearably tense, and the character arcs feel earned. The Violence is a dark but rewarding read!

Other Things That Make Me Happy

So if I haven’t made this clear already, one thing I love almost as much as books? Movies. Sundance Film Festival is entirely online this year, which I know is bad news because it means Covid has made it unsafe to hold the festival in person. But it is also good news for my dad and me, who now get to enjoy the festival virtually and spend some quality time watching some movies together online while we can’t be together in person! Tickets for the festival are on sale now, so if you also love movies, check it out!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Here’s Cersei in one of her favorite places: in the window basking in the sunshine. Today was a beautiful day, and I’m so happy my sweet girl got to spend time enjoying the sun.

I hope you all get some time in the sun this week too! Take advice from Cersei and cherish the sunshine. Cats always have the best ideas.

And with that, we enter into another new week, friends! I hope it’s a good one for you. I’m rooting for you! Until next time!

Can’t Wait for This One

cover of The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings

The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings (Amistad, August 9)

Oh boy. I have been WAITING for this one. And now that we’ve finally got a cover and a firm release date, I am so excited to share it with you. Did you read Megan Giddings’ 2020 literary horror/sci-fi/thriller Lakewood? It left me feeling strange and unsettled. I also felt like I’d just read something truly original, a story that seemed so important and yet had not been told before. At least, not like that.

So last year, I heard whispers that Giddings was coming out with a new book and that it was going to be witchy and it was going to be called The Women Could Fly. Obviously, without even having a cover or a release date or even a synopsis, I was already like, yep, sign me up. Every day since, I’ve been watching the Goodreads page for The Women Could Fly like a hawk, waiting for more information to drop. A release date. A cover. A bat signal. Anything. And, well, as you know… it’s finally here!

So here’s what we know now. Like Lakewood, Giddings’ latest promises to be a novel that mixes speculative genres with literary fiction and social commentary, and this one’s being compared to the works of Margaret Atwood, Shirley Jackson, and Octavia Butler.

The Women Could Fly is set in a dystopian world where witches are real and The State mandates that all women are married by the age of 30. If they are not married by then, they must enroll in a registry that allows for their every move to be monitored. 27 year-old Josephine Thomas has never known why her mother mysteriously disappeared. But now as Josephine nears 30 and still has no interest in getting married, she feels like she understands her mother more than ever. When Jo is offered the opportunity to honor one last request from her mother, Jo will leave behind the life she’s always known to feel a connection to her one last time.

We haven’t gotten to feature the beautiful Cersei in a while (she’s a shy baby), so here she is! So Cersei likes to do this thing where she waits until we’re about to get up to jump in our laps. We watched an entire football game yesterday (gooooo Dawgs), and this girl waited until AFTER the game was over to jump into my husband’s lap. Of course, then Ben had to stay there until she was ready to leave. That’s just the rule of cats.

And that’s all for today, friends! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I can’t wait to talk to you all on Monday! Happy weekend reading!

good rich people book

Good Rich People by Eliza Jane Brazier

This book is just good fun, and I’m excited it’s out so soon so I can share it with all of you! As the title and the cover design suggests, this book is about rich people and how weird wealth makes people. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg in this unsettling psychological thriller.

This is the story of Lyla who has always seen life as a game she is destined to win. She and her husband Graham are extremely wealthy, and what do wealthy people do to entertain themselves? Play games with the less fortunate. So Lyla and Graham decide to invite self-made success stories to live in their guesthouse and then conspire to ruin these people’s lives. One of those people is Demi. But Demi’s not like some of the other people the rich couple has toyed with in the past. Demi knows what it means to struggle, and she refuses to give up the game without a fight.

Good Rich People is a twisty and surprising thriller that will have people talking. If you want a book club pick that’s going to spark wildly different opinions and interesting conversations, I think this book could be a really great pick for book clubs in 2022 as well.
