Sponsored by Endling #1: The Last by Katherine Applegate, the bestselling author of The One and Only Ivan!

Byx is the youngest member of her dairne pack, a rare doglike species. Rumored to have remarkable abilities, dairnes have been hunted to near-extinction in the war-torn kingdom of Nedarra. When her pack is lured into a trap and wiped out, it seems Byx may be the last of her species: an endling.

As Byx sets out on a quest to find a safe haven—and perhaps even another of her kind—she meets new allies, who each have their own motivations for joining her. They begin as strangers and grow to be their own kind of family, and together they will uncover a secret that will threaten the existence of not just the dairnes, but every other creature in their world.

A new Anne Tyler novel is a thing I live for. I find reading her to be like being enveloped in a warm, fuzzy blanket. Her writing is so lovely and calming. Sponsored by Hush, My Inner Sleuth by M.E. Meegs

This serpentine saga opens in the year 1947 at a New England women’s college, where the ever-playful Betty escapes a meddlesome narrator by slipping her friend Willie a mickey and assuming her identity. Undaunted, the plucky storyteller adopts Willie as her new protagonist and travels with her to L.A.

Soon after their arrival, the pulp-inflected ghost of Skip Ryker—a recently atomized Hollywood detective—hijacks the head of the literarily precocious Willie in  hopes of solving his murder. What follows is a comic saga of intrusive narrators, metafictional backstabbing, and one very peculiar psyche. (Accepting ARC requests now…)

small countrySmall Country by Gaël Faye

This novel has won some serious prizes, so I had to read it and see what all the fuss was about. AND WOW. It’s a slim novel but it packs a HUGE punch. It’s narrated by a young boy named Gaby in Burundi, beginning right before the start of the genocide in Rwanda and Burundi in the 1990s. It offers a look at life for his family in the midst of violence and fear, as seen through the eyes of a ten-year-old, and how it changes them forever. It is lovely and brutal and will stay with you for a long time.

the book of mThe Book of M by Peng Shepard

Fans of Station Eleven, listen up! In a dystopian near-future world, people have begun to lose their shadows. And not in a cutesy Peter Pan way—when someone loses their shadow in this book, it means they are destined to also lose their memory shortly after. Fear has caused mass chaos and struggles for power, and the world is a bleak place, and it is up to the remaining survivors to find a cure before they lose their own shadows. This one is g-r-e-a-t.

what should be wildWhat Should Be Wild by Julia Fine (Harper, May 8)

A dark modern fairy tale, about a young girl who can kill people with a touch – and bring them back to life just as easily. (Think Ned the Pie Maker 2.0, ad infinitum.) Because of her condition, Maisie has always been kept hidden away at her family’s home, where she is raised (and studied) by her scientist father. But when he disappears, Maisie must go looking for him in the one place he told her never to go: the dark woods. If you like your stories a bit strange, this captivating novel is for you.

temper by nicky draydenTemper by Nicky Drayden (Harper Voyager, August 7)

Hey, remember that amazing, bananapants book The Prey of Gods? Well, get excited, because she has a new one and it too is a wild delight! It’s about the relationship between twin brothers – one of whom is (literally) branded the lesser twin – which becomes really messy when demonic possession enters their lives. They must work together to thwart the demons before someone loses his – wait for it – temper. Drayden is such an imaginative writer and this one gets two possessed thumbs up!

spinning silverSpinning Silver by Naomi Novik (Del Rey, July 10)

Despite the similar covers, this is not an Uprooted sequel. It is, however, a highly inventive and fun interpretation of the classic fairytale Rumpelstitskin. (You know, the one where the lady tries to weasel out of her end of the bargain by guessing the little man’s name?) In this one, the scary creatures in the woods hear that the moneylender’s daughter, Miryam, can turn silver into gold. (Actually she’s just good at her job, but scary creatures don’t care about that.) Told from several perspectives, Novik weaves a remarkable tale of family, honor, and bravery.

And this is funny.

I am heavily invested in the adventures of Kelly Link’s cat.

circeCirce by Madeline Miller (April 10, Little, Brown and Company)

There are not enough words to describe how much I love Miller’s follow-up to The Song of Achilles, a retelling of the Greek mythology of Circe, daughter of the god of the sun, who was banished to an island for fear of her powers, and the iconic mythology characters she encounters there, as well as the complex tale of her life. Miller turns Circe into a strong, flawed heroine, and this book does her tremendous justice.

tin manTin Man by Sarah Winman (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, May 15)

This novel was already nominated for a bunch of things when it was released overseas, and now it is coming to share its wonderfulness with the States. Because it’s amazing! It’s a beautiful novel about friendship and true love, and not, as you might think from the title, about the heartless tin man from Oz.

the ensembleThe Ensemble by Aja Gabel (Riverhead Books, May 15)

A wonderful debut about four talented people, drawn together by their love of music, who are trying to survive in the competitive, cutthroat world of musicians, and how their reliance on one another both helps and hurts them.

And this is funny.

Mary Laura Philpott is busted.

But now he’s going to be attending a fancy prep school in Manhattan, and black teenage boys don’t exactly fit in there. So it’s a surprise when he meets Ellie the first week of school. In one frozen moment their eyes lock, and after that they know they fit together–even though she’s Jewish and he’s black. Their worlds are so different, but to them that’s not what matters. Too bad the rest of the world has to get in their way.

neverworld wakeNeverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl (Delacorte Press, June 5)

I am such a big fan of Pessl’s novels Special Topics in Calamity Physics and Night Film, so I immediately dropped everything and read this as soon as I got it. I didn’t even read the description and WHOOOOO was I in for a ride! Pessl’s first YA novel is a twisty, dark mystery of suspicious deaths, broken friendships, and supernatural happenings. I’ve already said too much!

suicide clubSuicide Club: A Novel About Living by Rachel Heng (Henry Holt and Co., July 10)

Set in future NYC, this is a family drama wrapped up in sci-fi ribbons. Lea Kirino has the potential to live forever (literally), but when she runs into her estranged father on the sidewalk and becomes drawn into the Suicide Club, she learns just how precarious and implausible forever can be. A refreshingly original debut.

okay fine whateverOkay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went from Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things by Courtenay Hameister (Little, Brown & Company, July 31)

This was as charming and funny as I wanted it to be. As someone who is afraid of pretty much everything, I really appreciated this book. Hameister decide to face some of her fears and writes about her experiences. Chapters include “An Hour with a Professional Cuddler: In Wherein I Learn Not to Hate Affirmations. As Much” and “Getting Legally High: In Which I Learn That Some People Just Shouldn’t Smoke Pot.”

And this is funny.

This tweet is not book related but it made me actually laugh out loud.
