Love Abroad, Road Trips, and Second Chances

“Alexa, play September by Earth, Wind, & Fire”.

Yes, I know that the date called out in there is the 21st of this month. And, no I do not care, since I’m still jamming out in my head.

Seriously though, Happy First of September y’all! As mentioned last time, I’m looking forward to the cooler weather and, while it’s not my favorite flavor, I’m happy that my Pumpkin Spice Loving peeps will soon have their fix. This also means that I’m patiently awaiting the Peppermint season.

Now that I’m sure we’re all wanting coffee, let’s get to the rest of the newsletter!

I enjoy a good tote bag. And this one is adorable. I love how they matched the pictures with the various tropes perfectly. Plus, when you use this to shop you’re helping cut down on plastic bag usage. Now, that said, do I need anymore tote bags? Probably not. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want them, especially when they’re this cute. If you’re in that same boat, it starts at $19 in price.

Riot Recommendations

You may have noticed an increase of book arrows floating around the various social media platforms. If you’re unaware of what those are, they are graphics used to describe books quickly. Check out this one for J.J. Mavoy’s upcoming release, Aphrodite and the Duke, and this one that Mimi Mathews used back in April for her release of The Belle of Belgrave Square to see how they look.

Now, the main reason that they’re so popular at the moment is due to a dismissive and condescending tweet a user put out regarding Ali Hazelwood’s latest release, Love on the Brain. I believe the phrase used was ‘cringe’ and the post implicated that Ali, and any other who uses this, should be ashamed for it. I’m not linking to the original tweet because I earnestly try not to boost negative posts like that. At the end of the day, it’s just an attention grabber and I refuse to give them that.

Look, I’m all for people having a difference opinions and not enjoying something. But the issue there is that the OP gave off very ableist vibes. Book arrows may not be your cup of tea; but for others, it’s super helpful. Also as the old adage goes, let people like things.

Now, while I can’t do the graphics like that for formatting issues, the recommendations today will be presented in that bullet format style just to give a quick overview of what these books are about.

So, it will be a week before you hear from me again via this format. That said, you can always give me a follow over on Twitter under @PScribe801. “Dirty” Shelves, “Blind” Marriages, and Meet Cutes

It’s the last week of August which means, that, technically fall is almost here. However, it’s possible that the weather outside will likely stay the same and it will still be hotter than heck outside. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens. That said, I have been appreciative of the rain that has rolled through my neck of the woods recently and hope it comes back for a longer visit.

I’m currently reading Book Lovers, for real this time, as well as Unexpected Goals, and The Unmatchmakers, which is a Kobo exclusive by Jackie Lau. I also picked up Love in the Time of Serial Killers on Tuesday. I intended to get this on Bookstore Romance Day but it was sold out. I’m still counting it for that though since that was the intention. And never mind to that muffled, angry yelling you may be hearing. It’s just my TBR pile and bank account reprimanding me. I’ve learned to tune them out.

Let’s move on to the rest of the newsletter!

Riot Recommendations

There are some books, both inside and outside of romances, where I almost wish I was a fly on the wall when it was pitched. And this is because, in theory, the premise is a bit banana pants. And that’s fine. I’m all for banana pants as long as it’s done well.

That leads to recommendations I have for today. While I’m very open minded with most romance plots (although I do have deal breakers which I’ve talked about before), both of these made my eyebrow quirk a little bit for both the premise and, if I’m being honest, the title. But I also know that they are favorites as well and are a great way to pass a couple of hours.

Also, as fortune would have it, both are romances with a fantasy thread in it. So, if that is your fancy, you’re very much in luck today.

cover of that time I got drunk and saved a demon by kimberly lemming

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming

I mean, a majority of the premise is right there in the title. It’s just missing that the main female character gets dragged along on a mission to take down an evil witch after said rescuing. I had heard of this book in passing and was intrigued by the title alone. Then I saw this TikTok that the author put out, got drawn in by her pink hair, and that cemented it for me.

cover of No Getting Ogre You

No Getting Ogre You by M.L. Eliza

I’m not sure anyone ever had ogre romance on their reading bingo card, but here we are. Don’t mistake me, though, since this is still an engaging story. There is something to be sad about a sweet, albeit large, green guy who is super sweet and understands consent. Because we all know how important that is in real life and in fiction. It’s also a novella, so it’s something that can be knocked out in a couple of hours.

Read about Ali Hazelwood chatting up her latest release, Love on the Brain in this interview. If you’re interested the book was released last week.

There are two upcoming chances to see author Danielle Jackson speak. One is on August 30th, where she’ll be discussing her recent release, The Accidental Pinup. And then in early-ish September, she’ll be chatting up Elena Armas to discuss her newest release, The American Roommate Experiment.

Build a sweet charcuterie board and get the first initial of your soul mate.

I actually haven’t seen It Follows but same my friend…same.

And that’s all I have for y’all today. I’ll be back on Thursday, which will also be the first day of September, with another fresh newsletter for you. In the meantime, you can find me occasionally posting over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy readying and stay hydrated!

Have You Hugged Your Mechanic Today?

Romance friends, I cannot articulate how glad I am that the weekend will be on the horizon when this goes out. I had to do an extraordinary amount of adulting on Monday, which included me having to get a tire fixed because it had picked up a screw. Then I spent roughly four hours at my mechanic because after I went to celebrate Bookstore Romance Day, my ‘Check Engine’ light came on while I was driving home. Then when I complained about it to my friend, she told me she had noticed an oil leak on her driveway from my car after I left. Good times all around.

On a positive note, I got through a good chunk of West Side Love Story which was nice.

And, speaking of Bookstore Romance Day, I ended up with a nice book haul that day and picked up Bet On It, The Hookup Plan, and Booked on a Feeling. I also picked up a Horror Tarot deck, which isn’t romance related but still brought me joy. And with how my Monday ended up turning out, it was very much appreciated in hindsight.

Will Vi be willing to embrace that world for her or want to return to their regular life?

Riot Recommendations

Even though I didn’t plan on spending most of my Monday at my mechanic getting my car fixed, it was something that needed to be done. I was there for about four hours and I didn’t bring my laptop. While that was great for my reading, as mentioned above, I was still restless.

It got me thinking how invaluable it can be to find a mechanic that you know and trust since, historically, they haven’t always been honest, especially when it comes to women or people who identify as women. My mechanic is a close friend so I always go to the shop where he works, no matter where it is in relation to me.

This also lead to my recommendations for today which feature a mechanic as one of the romantic leads. Don’t get ideas about wishful thinking on my part though! The relationship I have with my mechanic friend is purely platonic.

cover of Wait With Me

Wait With Me by Amy Daws

Romance author Kate finds inspiration in her local mechanic shop and sneaks in to help her get through a writer’s block. She thinks she’s unnoticed but little does she know that Miles, one of the mechanics, is very aware of her coming and going. I’ll admit that this one popped in my head as a recommendation since I know I could have gotten some writing done if I had remembered to bring my laptop with me Monday.

Cover of Mechanics of Love

Mechanics of Love by Meka James

Dr. Irene finds herself stranded when her car breaks down, leaving her dependent on the help of the local mechanic, Remi, who has always rubbed her the wrong way. The feeling is mutual, with Remi thinking that Irene is a spoiled princess. As the two women spend time together though, they have to come to terms with first impressions not always being right. Y’all know how I feel about rivals to lovers and this one fits that bill.

I have to say this quiz for guessing your relationship status was accurate as all get out for me.

There’s also this one where you build a playlist to get your TV LGBTQ+ couple. While I may not have loved the one I ended up with, the description was spot on for me.

Check out how this TikTok of recommendations from The Ripped Bodice, celebrating Bookstore Romance Day.

And that’s all this week, friends! I hope that this upcoming weekend is restful and relaxing for you and, as always, full of reading. I’ll be back Monday with a fresh newsletter and, as always, feel free to give me a follow over on Twitter under @PScirbe801. Until then, stay hydrated!

Spies, Witches, and Romantic Besties

I think I speak for everyone when I say I hope that there is an actual Fall season this year. And by that I mean I don’t want to go from unbearably hot to unbearably cold in the span of 24 hours. I want a noticeable decline into cooler weather, with the leaves changing and all the autumnal, cottagecore, witchy vibes that go along with that.

On another note, and to harken back to this piece that I wrote last year, I legit almost typed “cottagegore” once again. One day I’ll get it right.

Anyway, please join me in sending out those vibes to get an actual fall this year for everyone because I’m sure we could all use the break from the heat.

With that said, on to the rest of the newsletter.

Mika lives a solitary life, as do most of the witches of the world. After all, if too many witches gather in one area, then their magic becomes even more noticeable. However, when she is hired to help tutor three young witches in a mysterious place called Nowhere House she can’t pass up the opportunity to check it out. There she meets three wonderfully mischievous girls, and a hodgepodge of caretakers for them including a very handsome and grumpy librarian and wonders if this is the family for her.

* I read this eARC and thoroughly loved it so much so that I told my romance reading bestie to preorder it straight away. Which she did.

And don’t forget that for a more comprehensive list of new releases, you can always check out our New Books newsletter!

Riot Recommendations

My recommendations today both feature kind of a niche situation. They’re high school friends to lovers, with an added tweak of opposites attract and a dash of possible second chance. I know, sounds wild, but you’ll see what I mean when you check out the books below.

cover of Gouda Friends

Gouda Friends by Cathy Yardley

I’ve mentioned the first in this series, Love, Comment, Subscribe a lot but this one shouldn’t be overlooked. It is about Tam and Josh, high school BFFs who are always there for one another through the challenges of their life, the latest being Tam reaching out after a recent break up and Josh being all too happy to come visit and help get her back on track. However, this time, it is harder to ignore the passion that may or may not have been simmering there over the years of their friendship. This is sure to be a winner for others who enjoy this trope. Plus, it is all about cheese! Who doesn’t love cheese?

cover of Experimental Marine Biology

Experimental Marine Biology by Susannah Nix

With the exception of that one time in high school that they don’t talk about, Brooke and Dylan’s relationship has been purely platonic. When he crashes on her couch during a stay for a few days in exchange for being her date to a wedding, they are both looking forward to catching up. Until she accidentally sees him naked and then all platonic intentions go out the door. I admit I’m also a sucker of the “just the one time” trope since we all know good and gosh darn well it’s like a potato chip and there will never be just one.

Did you know there was a series of Poe-inspired romance novels written by a Black woman? I didn’t know so I’m sharing the knowledge. Just in time for Fall and associated reading vibes.

I feel this type of consideration is an unsung love language.

Love’s Sweet Arrow’s latest Trope Tuesday Recs are all about that Himbo Energy.

I missed posting this earlier, but Frolic’s Monthly Book Crush for August is none other than The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon.

I already knew I was a silver fox chaser but this poll solidified that.

And here’s a quiz about which fictional girls you may or may not be tempted to smooch.

And that’s all I have for you today. I’ll be back on Thursday with a fresh edition as well as a follow-up from my haul from Bookstore Romance Day. That is if you didn’t already see it over on my Twitter handle, @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated!

In case you didn’t know, today is Mail Order Catalog Day. True, it’s an oddly specific holiday; but, there’s something to be said about the nostalgia of going through a catalog, circling what you want, ordering it, and then waiting for the package to arrive in four to six weeks.

Ellis is the journalist tasked with unmasking Cherry and uncovering all the aspects of her life she keeps hidden. A chance encounter draws the two women together but when everything comes to light, will they be able to stay together after all the pieces fall down?

Riot Recommendations

Like many romance readers, there was a period of time where PNR was all I read. Nowadays, I don’t read it as much as I use to but it’s still a favorite. That said, it cannot be argued that most of the PNR novels out there focus primarily on vampires and/or werewolves, with a recent addition of the fae.

Now that there’s anything wrong with that of course. I still love a good vampire or werewolf romance novel. But, as I’ve mentioned before, there’s much more to the paranormal and supernatural than just those two. That is why for today’s recommendations, I’m going to be focusing on supernatural beings that deserve to have a chance in the spotlight.

cover of Bayou: King of the Seas

Bayou: King of the Seas Book 1 & 2 by Annitia L. Jackson

Mermaids are slowly rising in popularity in the supernatural world and we’re finding out that there are more layers to them than animated movies may have lead us to believe. And I’m here for it. In this book, King Bayou must team up with his brother’s widow, Rachel, to find out who and what is hunting/harming the Merpeople under his protection. Despite her distrust of him, Rachel agrees to help him, drawing both into a web of betrayal, unexpected enemies, and desire.

cover of Angel with Attitude

Angel with Attitude by Michelle Rowen*

Angels and demons are another set of supernatural creatures that are enjoying their time in romance. This delightful and light PNR is simultaneously hilarious, steamy, and emotional. When Valerie is literally pushed out of heaven, Nathaniel is the tempter demon assigned to make sure her fall is permanent. But when they start looking past each other’s surface level and ignoring how they’re supposed to treat each other, they open themselves up to the possibility of a romance for the ages.

*Please note that this isn’t available digitally, but the author has another set of PNRs that are if ebooks are your preference.

Embrace the Clinch

Hey y’all and welcome (back) to the Kissing Books newsletter. I hope that the weekend was kind to you and was as productive, or unproductive, as you wanted it to be. I spent a lot of last week clearing off the dining room table, which had become the furniture equivalent to a junk drawer, so that there would be another surface to work on laptops and, oh I don’t know, maybe eat on. Crazy thought, that.

I also used this surprise but not unwelcome energy to go through a mini-purge and get rid of a lot of other unnecessary things including some books I will never read or re-read. So, all in all I’m satisfied with the last few days.

Enough chit-chat; let’s move on to the rest of the newsletter.

Riot Recommendations

Apart from whether or not a romance needs an HEA (it does), another discourse that regularly makes the rounds in the romance world is whether or not there should be, *gasp*, half-nekkid people on the cover. And it grates oh so many levels because, at its core, it’s driven by the toxic purity culture that the U.S. thrives on.

Now, look, on the one hand I do get it; there is a certain stigma and assumption people make when they see you reading a romance novel with a clinch cover. That’s a topic for another time. But this cry for covers to stop doing it entirely is what sets me off, since not everyone feels this way. You want flowers, benches, and beaches on the covers of your romances? Have at it and do you. Just don’t presume to speak on what others want on the covers.

As I said above, I’m all for it, which leads to the recommendations I have for today; some of my favorite clinch covers where I also happen to enjoy the story.

cover of Tall Dark and Deadly

Tall, Dark, & Deadly by Kharma Kelley

I had the fortune of seeing this author speak in person a few years ago at my library’s Romance Social and snagged a few of her books after. This was one of them, a cover which was gleefully referred to as the NSFW cover. My friend opted to get the milder version while me, chaos demon that I am, went for this one. When you factor in the story is about vampires, shifters, and other paranormal creatures in a paranormal world that exists alongside ours? It’s winning all around. And Kelley has a wonderful sense of humor in her novels that is always welcome.

cover of Tender Rebel

Tender Rebel by Johanna Lindsey

Yes, I did have to do some internet sleuthing for this specific cover, since the current edition is much tamer. But look at this clinch and all that hair!! I love it. This is a delightful addition to the Malory series, which is the series that most people know this author for. Plus, I love a reformed rake story and Tony stands out amongst his peers since he purposefully stepped away from that life when he decided to marry Roslynn. You have to read it to find out more on the why and how. Also bear in mind this is “old school’ romance and, while it is arguably better than some of its peers content wise, there may still be some CW to be mindful of.

Speaking of clinch covers, I am confident I’ve mentioned the Daily Clinch Twitter account before, but if not, you really should check it out. All the throwback stepbacks can be found there.

I’m already on pins and needles waiting for this conversation between Rebekah Weatherspoon and Beverly Jenkins!!!

The latest Trope Tuesday from Love’s Sweet Arrow was all about those Stern Brunch Daddy vibes.

Good news for fans of The Spanish Love Deception; it’s going to be made into a movie.

Here is a list of some Persuasion read-a-likes, if you’re in the market for that.

And that’s all I have for you today. I’ll be back Thursday with a fresh newsletter for you. In the meantime, I can be found posting over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until then, happy reading and stay hydrated!

Cozy Small Town Romances

Hey y’all! We’re almost at the end of the work week, which means the weekend is nigh. I’m hoping to get a lot of reading done this weekend along with some writing and relaxing, as per the norm.

I am still working on West Side Love Story and started an eARC copy of Love on the Brain. Speaking of eARCS, I recently went through my email to clear it out and found I had a lot of those waiting for me. So, I did as any other book dragon would do and downloaded them all because I mean…why not?

That said, when you take that stack and add the two BOTM books that just came in, my TBR has pretty much exploded in less than a week. Not that I’m not panicking at the possibility of being overwhelmed with choices of what to pick up next. Not even a little bitty bit…

On that somewhat ominous note, let’s get to the rest of the newsletter.

Riot Recommendations

Between the announcement of the Clover Hill novellas (see more below) and Somebody Somewhere being released this week, small town romances were on my mind this week. While I am all for the city life, there is something to be said about the draw of a small town and the simplicity of it. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not without its drawbacks but then again, that’s life in general, no matter where you live. It’s all about what you need in that season of your life.

And in this season I need some small town romances!!

cover of Part of Your World

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez

When Alexis winds up stranded in a ditch, Daniel is the handsome young man who helps her out of her predicament which results in her first one-night stand. However, both of them feel the draw back to each other which results in a sweet affair starting up, which all may end up crashing when their two worlds collide. Typically, I try to focus on backlists for the recommendations but I couldn’t pass on a chance to recommend this delightful read since it was one of my favorites this year.

cover of Not the Marrying Kind

Not the Marrying Kind by Jae

When the small town of Fair Oaks is set to host its first lesbian wedding, florist Ashely and baker Sasha are hired to help make sure it runs smoothly. As the women work closely together, the attraction between them brews until they’re forced to admit that they have more than just a business relationship. Even though I wasn’t the little girl who had her whole wedding planned out from a young age, and actually find them to be stressful and overpriced as all get out, I am a sucker for romance novels that center around the planning of a wedding. I have no clue why, I just roll with it at this point.

Speaking of weddings, I was moved by this story of a couple who managed a wedding without blowing their bank account. No shame if you want a super expensive wedding but also don’t hate on those that want to be more frugal.

It was pretty much over once it began, but you may have heard of some controversy surrounding a call for submissions for a Gothic Romance anthology which seemed to boil down people being mad that some of the requirements were naturally an HEA and no incest, which is an interesting hill to die on for sure.

And in case you’re curious about the difference between a Gothic novel and a Gothic Romance novel, there’s a good introduction to the subgenre here as well more on why this blow up was confusing.

Also, there’s much excitement to be had for this new series of inclusive romance novellas.

I love this interview that NPR did with Beverly Jenkins and Courtney Milan.

This TikTok from The Ripped Bodice speaks to my soul, especially considering what I shared in my intro.

And that’s it for this week my friends. I hope y’all have an awesome weekend. If you need a little more of me in the meantime, then you can give me a follow over on Twitter under @PScribe801. Until Monday, happy reading and stay hydrated.

Grumpy/Sunshine is Always a Perfect Balance

Hello and Happy Monday to you. I hope that whatever time of day you’re reading this finds you well. Over here, we’re enjoying the last week of freedom before back to school, which is a bit nerve wracking for me this year. Even though I’m confident he will take it by storm, I’m not ready for that world just yet. It is so weird to think that we’re already there. Still, I’ll try to keep a positive outlook for him so I can be the support system he needs to navigate those waters.

On another note, today is Happiness Happens Day, which, if I’m being honest, sounds a bit aggressively cheerful. Totally agree with the intention behind it, since it’s essentially you don’t always need a reason to be happy but still…

In other news, tomorrow is Book Lover’s Day which I know we can all get down with.

Spicy Books Mug by MidnightDoorStudio

I love the subtle yet firm message that this mug delivers. And the art work is just delightful to me. Do I need another coffee mug? No. But to be fair, I also don’t need more books…but that’s not going to stop me from buying or wanting to buy more. And this is one that combines two of my loves into one glorious, caffeinated beverage holder. $16

Troy and Maya have a most interesting meet cute when she mistakes the engineer for the model for the adult toy she is being tasked with creating. I am not sure about y’all, but that’s enough of a hook for me to want to pick up this novella.

Riot Recommendations

Since it’s Happiness Happens Day, I decided today’s recommendations should feature the grumpy/sunshine trope. This is one of the more popular ones out there and I think a good portion of that is due to it being applicable in almost every type of relationship. Think about your friends and family members; chances are that dynamic may be present, with the close ones, especially.

As someone who is not ashamed to admit that, more times than not, they’re the “grumpy” factor, I feel this to be very true. And that’s okay because my “sunshine” friends still love me and, for them especially, I can easily swap sides if the situation calls for it.

With that said, here are the recommendations for today.

cover of A Kiss for Midwinter

A Kiss for Midwinter by Courtney Milan

I’ll admit I’m even more of a sucker for the grumpy/sunshine dynamic during the winter holidays and this one is no exception. Lydia and Jonas are perfectly balanced out here with his pragmatic and somewhat sarcastic nature acting as a foil to her optimistic one. It’s just delightful.

cover of Always Only You

Always On You by Chloe Liese

Ren is a hockey player who finds himself attracted to Frankie, one of the staff members on his team. And, despite her tough exterior, Frankie isn’t exactly unaffected by Ren but works hard to keep him at arm’s length. I really love books where the grumpy person is the FMC as opposed to the MMC since that is the default for some reason. This could be because, as stated above, I am Grumpy in mine but who knows? Either way, sign me up!

The latest Trope Tuesday from Love’s Sweet Arrow is all about finding love a conventions.

Also, I’m really happy to see that The Ripped Bodice’s June’s Pride display is now a permanent fixture.

This list proves that when it comes to love, age isn’t anything but a number; provided, of course, that both parties are consenting adults.

Slow Burns, Summer Romances, and Cover Reveals

I know I sound like a broken record, but I seriously can’t believe summer is almost over. Part of me is dealing with regrets of trips not taken. Then the other part remembers that this summer has included record breaking temperatures and don’t feel too bad, especially since the teenager still got to go to camp.

In fact, most of this upcoming Saturday will be spent picking him up from it which means another day of being in a car for over 6 hours. So, I am predicting a lot of my Sunday will be spent in jammies doing absolutely nothing, except maybe my laundry since his will be done the minute we get home because I’m under no illusions about the state those clothes will be in after a week at an outdoor camp.

I finished No Rings Attached and started reading West Side Love Story. The English Major in me really appreciated that Oliveras opened with a spin on the prologue from the play. Tiny bit of me trivia: I had to memorize that for my English class in high school and still remember it word for word. I also remember Puck’s closing monologue from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, due to having played that role in high school theater.

Enough dilly-dallying, on to the newsletter!

Slow Burn trope Sticker by BookishVibesDesignCo

I have recently discovered I’m a fan of a good slow burn in my romances. And it doesn’t matter if we get to read what happens when it stops being slow or if the sex ends up being off the pages after the build up. Of course, I’m honest enough to admit that prefer to read all about it but I also have love for books, and readers, who prefer it off the pages. $3

Riot Recommendations

Today’s recommendations are all about summer or rather the end of it, since that is the position that I am currently in at the moment.

cover of like lovers do

Like Lovers Do by Tracey Livesay

Even though I’ve never been there for multiple reasons, Martha’s Vineyard to me always screams end of summer. I’m chalking it up to how often it is used in pop culture for those types of books and movies. In Like Lovers Do, you get all that plus a roommate/fake dating situation with enough repressed feelings, akin to a slow burn actually, to practically sizzle off the pages. Yes please.

cover of beach read

Beach Read by Emily Henry

So, I know that this book is well known and not under the radar by any stretch of the imagination. But when I say I loved this book, I mean it wholeheartedly. It came to me when I was at the end of three familial losses in a row and so I related so hard to January and her grief. Plus the romance was that slow burn that I like and mentioned above. Also, for whatever reason, I just really appreciated how August always called her by her full name. Not sure why that’s swoon-worthy but I’m rolling with it.

Convenient I Do’s and Second Chances

Happy first of August. This summer seems to have flown by which was something I really thought only happened to kids who didn’t want to go back to school. Turns out the same sometimes applies to adults. Who knew?

Did you also know today is National Girlfriend’s Day? I’m not sure if this means platonic or romantic girlfriends but part of me goes why not both? Whichever one applies to you, get out and celebrate. There doesn’t appear to be a National Boyfriend Day though, which I’ll admit doesn’t seem a bit fair. So I say celebrate them today too!

And tomorrow is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day. With the temps being what they are, I’m sure everyone will want to take part in that one. I’m a big fan of the classic sandwiches but made with a cookies and cream filling.

Sapphic Romance Novel Clinch Cover T-Shirt by fuglybarbie

I love a good clinch cover, a good Sapphic romance, and a good T-shirt. And this one is all three in one, which means it’s a winner all around. I also do love the diversity rep, I won’t lie. It also comes in ten other colors so if you have multiple options which to choose from. $22.

The Hook-Up Plan by Farrah Rochon

But Drew is equally as determined to show her that he is a good man all around who cares about more than she thinks.

Just Another Love Song by Kerry Winfrey

This second chance romance is about high school sweethearts Sandy and Hank. As young lovers, they made a promise to leave their small town and stay together, both of which end up broken. When Hank returns to their hometown later with his son, Sandy is happy with her life and has no desire to walk back down that road. At least not until they’re thrown together to plan the annual fair and begin to remember what it was that made them fall in love to being with.

Riot Recommendations

I don’t know about y’all, but I had a lot of fun last month with recommendations. Beverly Jenkins and her books are so important to me. She is the first author I personally came in contact with that showed me that romances were truly for everyone, and Black people were more than just background or filler characters.

We’re going back to tropes for a bit with recommendations and today’s theme is Marriage of Convenience. I know that these happened a lot in historical romances since that is when a lot of them happened in real life. But it is still a theme that is pretty popular in contemporary romances, and they tend to be a little more diverse. I mean, don’t get me wrong, more work can still be done but they are miles ahead of their historical counterparts.

With that said, let’s get to the recs!

cover of Xeni: A Marriage of Inconvenience by Rebekah Weatherspoon

Xeni by Rebekah Weatherspoon

I love a good elderly matchmaker, both in this and the other side of the veil. Xeni and Mason have to get married in order to get the assets that were left to them from Xeni’s Aunt Sable. Plus it’s a Weatherspoon, so you know you’re in for a lotta laughs and steamy scenes.

picture of Married for Christmas cover

Married for Christmas by Noelle Adams

In this holiday novel, friends Daniel and Jessica get married to help make the widowed Daniel look more like a “suitable minister” and give Jessica the opportunity for a husband and children. I know the premise may seem iffy but it’s fairly entertaining and Daniel is definitely in the “Hot Minister” category.

August 20th is Bookstore Romance Day and a lot of events are being announced. One of the ones I’m most excited for is this History in Color Panel. Be sure to also check your local indie to see what things they may have planned. I know that there are a lot of independent stores out there that shun romance, but there are just as many that look forward to this day just as much as us.

Considering, you know, everything going on right now, I really appreciated these week’s recommendations for Magical Realism romance from Love’s Sweet Arrow.

More romance novel covers on rocks!

Take this fun quiz to see if you would be perfect match for Chris Evans.
