Aquaman: The Becoming by Brandon Thomas and Diego Olortegui

Jackson Hyde took a long time to put together the pieces of his identity: son of Black Manta, gay, Aqualad. Today’s Riot Rec theme is: female friendships! These comics explore the unique dynamics that develop between girls and women.

Real Friends by Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham

In this graphic memoir, author Shannon Hale recalls her elementary school years, when her best friend Adrienne started hanging out with the cool kids — and leaving Shannon behind. Brightly illustrated by LeUyen Pham, this comic is perfect for helping kids (of any age!) learn the importance of finding a true friend and how to cope when someone you trusted seems to betray you.

Moms by Yeong-shin Ma

Starting a family doesn’t necessarily mean having to end your friendships. Good thing, too, as the moms in this no-holds-barred manhwa definitely need some friendly support as they deal with bad sex, worse relationships, and dead-end jobs. This not-child-friendly comic is a fantastic and hilarious read for any woman who has ever felt like throwing in the towel…or something a lot heavier.

Batman has been a dad since 1940, when he took in Dick Grayson, and I will fight you on this. This TPB collects Batman’s first adventures with his stabby little boy and shows how this new Dynamic Duo learned to get along as both partners and as family.

It often takes guts to be yourself and choose your own path, especially when you’ve already been attacked for doing so in the past. In this heartfelt middle-grade graphic novel, young Bangladeshi-American Nisrin must overcome past trauma and go against her family’s wishes to do what she feels is right: show her faith by wearing her hijab at her new school.

The Mighty Thor, Vol. 1: Thunder in Her Veins by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman

Before Thor: Love and Thunder comes out (that’s July 8 in the U.S.!), learn more about Jane Foster’s early adventures as the goddess of thunder.
