They Both Die At the End Prequel Details Revealed

According to author Adam Silvera’s post on Instagram, the prequel to They Both Die at the End, entitled The First to Die at the End has now been formatted and designed. And Silvera has some teasers for the upcoming book to share with his fans. Check out the author’s Instagram post to see the first epigraph, a quote from Joaquin Rosa, the creator of Death-Cast, who readers will meet for the first time in this novel. Silvera says Joaquin will be the third central narrator to the book.

Bridgerton Season 3 Will Focus on Colin and Penelope’s Story

Netflix’s Bridgerton is skipping ahead of Julia Quinn’s books for its third season, which will follow the Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) love story. The third book in Quinn’s series focuses on Benedict Bridgerton’s love story, but that story will now likely be pushed back for a later season.

WordsRated is a website that studies and analyzes book content, and they are now looking for “bibliophiles-at-large” to read popular books and take notes on some of the books’ details. WordsRated says of the job, “We give you books. You read them. We give you cold, hard cash. We’re looking for people capable of devouring hundreds of pages with ease while paying attention to detail. Villawood Graphic Novel Wins Book of the Year at NSW Premier’s Literary Awards

Safdar Ahmed’s Still Alive: Notes from Australia’s Immigration Detention System has been named book of the year at the New South Wales premier’s literary awards. This debut graphic novel, which documents the stories of detainees inside Villawood immigration detention center, was lauded by judges as “a labor of generosity” and “an unflinching critique of policy.” Along with winning the $10,000 top prize of the evening, the graphic novel also won the $20,000 multicultural category. “It is unusual for a comic or graphic novel to be nominated for a prize like this so I wasn’t expecting to even be shortlisted to be honest. I am delighted,” Ahmed said. “I think people are still quite unaware just how cruel and punishing Australia’s policies are against asylum seekers and refugees. I hope this book educates people.”

Nine Perfect Strangers to be Renewed for a Second Season

Although it is not yet official, sources say David E. Kelley’s Nine Perfect Strangers, the series based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, will be submitted as an ongoing drama rather than in the presumed limited series category. Details on what the second season will be about and what characters we can expect to see return are still unknown. We should expect to know more information once a formal announcement is made.

New Children’s Bookstore Dedicated to Self-Published Authors Opens in Colorado Springs

In Colorado Springs, self-published children’s author Joni McCoy is opening a children’s bookstore that is dedicated to self-published authors. “It’s my passion…to show the incredible variety we have here that you’re not going to see in a larger bookstore,” McCoy said in a statement. The bookstore Young Bookworms is filled with more than 250 books showcasing about 160 authors, several of which are from Colorado Springs (including herself). Young Bookworms will feature daily story times, opportunities to learn more about writing and publishing, book clubs and more. You can check out the Young Bookworms website here.

Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has just signed a new 22-book deal with Australian publishers Serenity Press which will include three new young adult novels. Ferguson says she will draw from her personal struggles with mental health and eating disorders, channeling some of her own painful experiences from her teenage years into her writing. Her first young adult book, Demon’s Land, will be released at the end of June.

91st Annual California Book Awards Winners

The winners of the 91st Annual California Book Awards have been announced, and the awards will be presented virtually on Monday, June 6th, 2022. The California Book Awards honor the exceptional literary merit of California writers and publishers. Taraji P. Henson in Talks to Produce and Star in Queenie

Taraji P. Henson is in talks to produce and star in Queenie, a new series based on the book The World of Stephanie St. Clair: An Entrepreneur, Race Woman and Outlaw in the Early Twentieth Century Harlem by Shirley Stewart. Adapted by Leigh Davenport, the series tells the true story of Stephanie St. Clair, who was “the most profitable female ‘numbers banker’ in an illegal underworld run by the most vicious and notorious of men” in the 1920s and ’30s. Henson would produce the project under her TPH Entertainment banner alongside Christine and Mark Holder of Wonder Street.

Jane Harper Announces New Novel Exiles

Jane Harper has announced her latest novel Exiles. The author wrote on Instagram, “Aaron Falk returns one last time, and it’s been both fantastic and bittersweet to bring together this final story for him… I’ve loved writing this story, it’s been a really special one, so I hope you enjoy it.” Exiles will be out in Australia on September 20th. The book will be released in the US and UK in early 2023.

Netflix Releases Trailer for First Kill

Only a few days after Netflix released the first images for its upcoming series First Kill, the streaming platform released its trailer. First Kill is based on the short story by V.E. Schwab, which was originally published in the 2020 anthology Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite. The series comes out on Netflix on June 10th.

Wilmer Valderrama Lands YA Crime Drama on Telemundo

NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama is executive producing Keep This To Yourself, an adaptation of Tom Ryan’s YA thriller, for Telemundo. The series is written by Tom Ryan, Mark Kruger and Danny Fernandez. The story takes place a year after the notorious Catalog Killer murdered four victims and then disappeared. Everyone is trying to leave this tragedy in the past, but when a cryptic message turns up one day, the search for the killer reignites. And no one is above suspicion. Valderrama will produce the project via his production company WV Entertainment with Cheryl Bayer’s Living Popups.

Marvel Introduces a Spectacular New Mutant Hero

This June, meet Escapade, Marvel’s newest mutant superhero. Escapade will join other LGBTQIA+ Marvel heroes this year as part of Marvel’s ongoing Marvel’s Voices series. Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 will feature Escapade as a central character in the story, written by Charlie Jane Anders and drawn by artist duo and Eisner-nominated cartoonists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, with colors by Tamra Bonvillain. Escapade, whose real name is Shela Sexton, is a trans mutant who is able to switch physical spaces with other people, or “trade any specific physical or abstract attribute such as possessions, organizational status, skills, superhuman powers, and even situations.” Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 will only be the beginning of Escapade’s adventures, as she will return in the fall in a special story arc of New Mutants, guest-written by Anders.

Fantasy Novelist Patricia A. McKillip Has Died

Author Patricia A. McKillip died May 6, 2022 at the age of 74. McKillip was best known for her fantasy novels for children and young adults, including the Riddle-Master trilogy. McKillip received many awards for her writing, including a World Fantasy life achievement award in 2008. She is survived by her husband David Lunde.

Charlize Theron Posts First Look of Her Marvel Studios Debut in Doctor Strange 2

Six days after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiered, Charlize Theron posted the official first look of Clea on Instagram. Clea is Theron’s Marvel character who was introduced in the mid-credits scene the new Doctor Strange film. In her Instagram post, Theron simply says, “Meet Clea.” At this point, it’s still unknown when this character will show up again, but stay tuned!

Bono Has Written A Memoir

U2’s Bono has written a memoir, entitled Surrender, and he will be publishing it with Knopf this November. Knopf says the memoir will take readers through Bono’s “early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty.”

The Nashville Public Library Creates “I Read Banned Books” T-Shirts

As part of their “Freedom to Read” campaign, the Nashville Public Library Association has created “I Read Banned Books” t-shirts (and a coffee mug). The shirts are on sale through Bonfire, and a portion of proceeds from the sales will benefit Nashville Public Library programs, resources and collections to keep information available to all people, completely free of charge. In a statement on Bonfire, the National Public Library Association writes, “At Nashville Public Library, we celebrate everyone’s Freedom to Read — to independently determine what you read (and don’t read) and to determine what your children read (or don’t read). After all, public access to a variety of ideas and thinking — not just the popular ones — is what our democracy is all about.”

Limited Series Based on Toni Morrison’s Sula in the Works

HBO is developing a limited series adaptation of Sula, the novel by Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison. The project comes from Shannon M. Houston—who also worked on Lovecraft Country, Little Fires Everywhere, and Station Eleven—and Stephanie Allain’s Homegrown Pictures.

Sergey Dyachenko, Co-Author of Vita Nostra, Has Died

Sergey Dyachenko, co-author of Vita Nostra with his wife Marina, has died. Harper Voyager posted the tragic news on Instagram, adding, “If you knew his writing, you would think he was a dark soul, but if you ever met him, you would have been covered in his light and warmth. We will miss him. We will miss his creativity. We will miss how he helped bring a new perspective into SFF. One of the true originators of dark academia in the fantasy world, he and Marina had a wonderful vision that will live on.” Dyachenko is survived by his wife.

Netflix Debuts First Images from First Kill

Netflix has released the first set of images for its upcoming young adult vampire drama First Kill, along with announcing when the series will make its debut. First Kill, based on the short story by V.E. Schwab, tells the story of a teen vampire who decided to finally make her first kill in order to cement her place in the family hierarchy. But there’s one problem. The person she chooses to kill comes from a family of vampire hunters. First Kill will star Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette, Imani Lewis as Calliope, Elizabeth Mitchell as Margot Fairmont, Aubin Wise as Talia Burns, Gracie Dzienny as Elinor Fairmont, Dominic Goodman as Apollo Burns, Phillip Mullings Jr. as Theo Burns, and Jason R. Moore as Jack Burns. The series debuts all eight episodes on Netflix on June 10th.

Greta Lee to Adapt Cathy Park Hong’s Minor Feelings

Cathy Park Hong’s Minor Feelings is being adapted into a television series by Greta Lee and A24. Lee will star in, write, and executive produce the adaptation of Hong’s non-fiction book, which is part memoir, part history, and part cultural criticism. The book was a New York Times bestseller and won a National Book Critics Circle Award. Christina Lee, showrunner of HBO Max’s Made For Love, is also attached to executive produce and supervise the project.

Comic Book Artist George Pérez Has Died

Five months after publicly announcing his terminal cancer diagnosis, artist and writer George Pérez has died. Friends and family confirmed the news on social media on Saturday. Pérez was 67 years old. In a statement to his fans, Pérez’s friend Constance Ezra wrote, “We are all very much grieving, but at the same time we are so incredibly grateful for the joy he brought to our lives. To know George was to love him; and he loved back… He loved all of you. He loved hearing your posts and seeing the drawings you sent and the tributes you made. He was deeply proud to have brought so much joy to so many.” A memorial service for Pérez will be held at MEGACON Orlando at 6pm on Sunday, May 22nd. It will be open to all.

Chris Bohjalian’s Novel The Lioness To Be Adapted For TV By eOne

Chris Bohjalian’s upcoming historical fiction thriller, The Lioness, will be adapted for television by eOne. The story follows a Hollywood starlet and her entourage as they embark on a luxurious African safari that turns deadly. And the book is set to publish on May 10th from Doubleday, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Eggers offers replacements for South Dakota banned books

Best-selling author Dave Eggers is offering high school seniors in Rapid City, South Dakota free copies of his book The Circle after school administrators deemed it inappropriate for high school students and then listed the district’s copies as surplus and marked “to be destroyed.” Eggers says high school students can email his office and ask for The Circle, as well as four other books by different authors targeted by the district, and the books will be shipped to students by independent bookstores.
