age of vice book cover

Age of Vice by Deepti Kapoor (Riverhead, January 3, 2023)

Let’s start talking about exciting new thrillers coming out in 2023, shall we? Well, there are plenty to come, but I want to start with one I’m particularly excited about, especially since we can expect it in early January. Age of Vice is a crime thriller/family drama by Indian author Deepti Kapoor. This is her second novel, and it’s going to be a page-turner. In fact, author Marlon James wrote that this novel was “brutal, tender, and heartbreaking” and “one of the best I’ve read.” So let’s get into what this one is about.

It’s 3 a.m. in New Delhi. A speeding Mercedes drives off the side of the road and five are left dead. The car belongs to a rich man who’s nowhere to be found. The only one there to answer for what happened is a shell-shocked servant who has no answers.

What follows is an action-packed story that shifts through time and perspectives in contemporary India. The story follows the corrupt, violent, and power-hungry Wadia family through their lavish estates, extravagant parties, predatory business dealings, and political influence. In the crossfires of the Wadia family’s corrupt web of lies, three lives become dangerously intertwined. There’s Ajay the servant, Sunny the playboy heir, and Neda the curious journalist. As their stories become more connected, will they find their path to escape the world of the Wadias? Or will they ultimately be destroyed by it?

Words of Literary Wisdom

With Halloween on the horizon, here’s a special scary edition of Words of Literary Wisdom:

“I am a horror maniac who prefers to stay at home.”
— Junji Ito

“The three types of terror: The Gross-out: the sight of a severed head tumbling down a flight of stairs, it’s when the lights go out and something green and slimy splatters against your arm. The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it’s when the lights go out and something with claws grabs you by the arm. And the last and worse one: Terror, when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute. It’s when the lights go out and you feel something behind you, you hear it, you feel its breath against your ear, but when you turn around, there’s nothing there…”
Danse Macabre by Stephen King

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for 80 years and might stand for 80 more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

In my absence, Remy has been chilling with his dad at his work desk during the day. Today, he’s really giving off those autumnal vibes, posing next to a pumpkin candle. See, Remy is ready for that fall weather too. Let’s gooo!

Okay, friends. That is all for today. Next time I talk to you, I hope to be wearing a really thick sweater and maybe some cozy socks. Think fuzzy thoughts for me (and for all of us). Talk soon!

Prepare Your Shelves!

seven empty houses book cover

Seven Empty Houses by Samanta Schweblin (Riverhead Books, October 18th)

Y’all! This is coming out tomorrow, and I’m so excited. And you should be too. In other words, prepare your shelves. Right now. Seven Empty Houses is a short story collection from Samanta Schweblin, author of bangers like Little Eyes and Fever Dream and Mouthful of Birds.

In her latest short story collection, Schweblin tells seven stories about seven strange (and yes, empty) houses. They’re all empty in different ways. Some are devoid of love. Some don’t have any furniture. Or any people. But in every case, something always creeps in: trespassers, a ghost, a list of things to do before you die…you get the idea. According to O, the Oprah Magazine, Seven Empty Houses is a “blazing new story collection that will make you feel like the house is collapsing in on you.”

Oh, and no big deal, but this book just made the National Book Award longlist for best book in translation! Okay, it is a big deal. Let’s all read this one together and then talk about how great it was.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“I used to think there was such a thing as emptiness, that there were places in the world one could go and be alone. This, I think, is still true, but the error in my reasoning was to assume that alone was somewhere you could go, rather than somewhere you had to be left.”

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

Ben and I were watching The Luckiest Girl Alive on Netflix, and I know the title of that movie is ironic and everything, but I think Cersei might actually be the luckiest girl alive. Just look at how cozy she looked while we were watching the movie.

BTW, before you ask, I never read Jessica Knoll’s The Luckiest Girl Alive, so you will have to tell me how the book was. The movie was…ok. I love Mila Kunis though.

Okay, that’s it! Hope you have a good Treat Yourself Day/my birthday.

we deserve monuments book cover

We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds (Roaring Book Press, November 29)

Here’s a YA debut coming out in November that I think everyone is going to be talking about. And just look at that cover! I’m absolutely in love. Teen Vogue called this one “a gripping portrayal of the South’s inherent racism and a love story for queer Black girls.” Intrigued? Read on.

Seventeen-year-old Avery Anderson’s life is turned upside down when she’s forced to leave DC and move with her family to live with her terminally ill grandmother, Mama Letty, in Bardell, Georgia. The tensions between Avery’s mom and Mama Letty make things uncomfortable as soon as they get there, and whenever she tries to find out more about what’s going on between them, she gets turned away.

But not everything is terrible in Avery’s new life. She makes two new friends: her next door neighbor Simone Cole and Jade Oliver, the daughter of the town’s most prominent family. As the three girls become closer, Avery and Simone’s friendship starts to grow into something more. And the mystery of Jade’s mother’s death has Avery looking into the dark, racist history of Bardell. Meanwhile, Mama Letty’s health continues to deteriorate, and Avery will ultimately have to decide if her hunt for the truth is worth destroying the friendships and connections she’s built for herself in Bardell.

the foxglove king book cover

The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten (Orbit Books, March 16, 2023)

I’ll be totally honest. It’s been a while since I’ve been super excited about a new epic fantasy series. But The Foxglove King comes from Hannah Whitten, author of For the Wolf and For the Throne. This is the first book in the Nightshade Kingdom trilogy, which the author described as “very bonkers and very fun and weirdly very funny.” Okay. Sign me up.

Ten years ago, Lore (who was thirteen at the time) escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. For these past ten years, she has done her best to try not to be found. But that’s difficult when her death magic, called Mortem, keeps her tied to the city. To keep herself relatively safe and sheltered, she works running poisons. But after a run goes wrong, Lore’s power is revealed.

Lore is then taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King, King August. The king has a task for Lore: Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, and Lore must use her magic to find out what happened to them. If she refuses, she will die. This book promises magic, forbidden romance, intrigue and more, and I’m excited to check it out!

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Okay, so I don’t want to speak too soon, but I started watching Interview with the Vampire…and it’s really good so far. Definitely going to be adding that to my weekend viewing roster. Have you checked it out already? Let me know your thoughts!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Well, while I’m waiting to relax in my reading chair this weekend, Remy is keeping it warm for me. And with those headphones, I guess he’s listening to some audiobooks. What do you think he’s listening to, friends? My guess is The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward.

And that’s all I’ve got for you this Thursday. I hope you have an amazing day and an amazing weekend, and I’ll see you back here next week!

And if you enjoyed Alison Cochrun’s debut novel The Charm Offensive, then you’ll be excited to know she’s back with a cute holiday romance. So prepare your shelves, because this one is out less than a month from now! And hey, I fully believe the moment Halloween is over, you’re totally okay to start celebrating the holidays. So November 1st is really the ideal time to start reading this book.

One year ago, Ellie Oliver was on top of the world. She’d recently moved to Portland, was working her dream job in animation, and she even met a woman at a bookstore with whom she immediately felt a romantic connection. But the next day, all of that was undone with a betrayal and the loss of her job soon after.

Now Ellie feels adrift, working at a coffee shop and living in the tiniest apartment imaginable. That’s when her coffee shop’s landlord approaches her with a plan: a marriage of convenience that will give him his recent inheritance and help alleviate some of Ellie’s financial stress. The two plan to spend the holidays in a cabin together to really solidify the “relationship” and make it seem real. But then Andrew introduces Ellie to his sister, who happens to be the woman she met a year ago at that bookstore.

And that is all for Book Radar on this fabulous October Monday. I hope you have a wonderful week. Enjoy an autumnal beverage. Look at some fall leaves if that’s happening in your part of the world. Wear a sweater.

With October basically here and Libra season upon us, I have to say I am in such a good mood. I wish it could be October all year round, but I guess we wouldn’t appreciate it as much if we had it all the time. So I’m just going to try to enjoy it while it’s here. Hope you’re all enjoying it as well. And on that note, it’s Book Radar time, so let’s goooooo!

Can’t Wait for This One!

highly suspicious and unfairly cute book cover

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert (Joy Revolution, January 3)

Book Radar has been horror and thriller heavy lately, I realize. Blame the weather. Blame the October pumpkin candle scent wafting in the breeze. But I figured it was time for a nice, refreshing rom com break. So with that in mind, let’s talk about a novel coming out in January 2023 that you’re not going to want to miss.

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute is the first book from Nicola Yoon and David Yoon’s imprint Joy Revolution, which focuses on publishing “stories with people of color as their heroes, each searching for love and living their lives on their own terms.” I’ve been so excited to see what Joy Revolution would be publishing, and this book seems like a really strong start, especially because it comes from bestselling romance author Talia Hibbert.

This YA romance is a story about a quirky content creator and a star football player working together to survive the great outdoors. Celine Bangura is obsessed with conspiracy theories, and she isn’t afraid to share her thoughts on everything from UFOs to holiday consumption on social media. But as well-liked as she is online, she’s never been that popular at her own high school. Which is why, she supposes, her ex-best friend Bradley Graeme abandoned her for the cool kids years ago.

Now Celine and Brad usually try their best to avoid each other. Which is why Celine is surprised when she signs up for a survival course in the woods and Brad is right there with her. Now to have a chance at winning the grand prize, Celine and Brad will have to work together, and rehash their messy past in the process.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“It was difficult and exhausting, but he quickly accepted the fact that life had to go on without her. He’d lost love, and yet the world was not the slightest bit shaken by his loss. The part of his life that had had J in it went away, leaving behind a cavity, a hollow, and still the world was unmoved. Nothing would ever fill in that empty space. But Oghi’s world would keep on spinning regardless.”

The Hole by Hye-Young Pyun

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing…I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

I have a couple of follow-ups for you all this week, from previous “What’s up in the book community?” segments. Come along with me.

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Let’s start with the good news, and let’s talk about another Halloween readathon I think you all will want to check out: The Blackoweenathon hosted by Loc’D Booktician. And if those Book recommendations for the readathon aren’t enough, here’s a whole video of recs, fresh for 2022. Enjoy!

And now some bad news. Remember back in August when I said the Bookish Box was potentially problematic? Yeah well. They’re up to more questionable things. You can see a quick breakdown of what happened over at Bookish Tea Alerts on Twitter, but there have been more developments since this was posted. You all know how much I love Book CommuniTEA, so I will let Jess Owens break it down for you. But warning that the Bookish Box tea involves ableism.

Phew that was a lot.

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Somehow I’ve powered through Love Island US, and now I have so much more time to start new shows. So give me your recs. This is a rare opportunity. Thankfully, the final season of Atlanta has started. SO PSA: If you’re not watching Atlanta, what are you doing??? Go do that now. I’m also keeping the horror movie party going. This weekend, I’m going to see Smile. I’m really tired of seeing this trailer, so I’m so happy the movie is finally out. I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

Oh! And My Best Friend’s Exorcism comes out on Friday! How could I forget?? So excited.

I guess I have a lot of movies and TV in my future, friends.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

calico cat on a couch

I know everyone’s been missing seeing Cersei Anne, so here she is, living her best couch life. Speaking of TV, Cersei looooooves the new House of the Dragon show, just FYI. Every time it comes on, she’s right up on the couch, just dying to see what those wacky Targaryens are up to this week.

Do your cats have a fave TV show? Let me know.

And that is all, friends! Have a great weekend.

Xiran Jay Zhao’s IRON WIDOW is Going to be a Movie and More Book Radar!

Book Friends,

How are you? I hope you’re doing well. As for me, I’m absolutely devastated because I recently learned that my favorite restaurant in the whole world will be shutting its doors for good on October 7th. The Grit is so full of memories for me. It’s where my friends and I got together for weekend brunches. It’s where I went for dinner on prom night. It was my vegetarian safe haven. If you want to give The Grit a try, you have until 10/7 to get to Athens, GA and grab one last Golden Bowl. Or if you can’t make it to Georgia any time soon, make sure to grab a copy of the Grit cookbook so you can make your own Grit food at home. It’s so good and totally worth it.

Anyway, the show must go on! Let’s chat books.

when franny stands up book cover

When Franny Stands Up by Eden Robins (Sourcebooks Landmark, November 1)

When Franny Stands Up doesn’t come out until November 1st, and here we are at the end of September. So while right now November seems a million days away, it’ll be here sooner than you know it. So prepare yourselves for this one, because this novel is the perfect funny and heartbreaking read to pick up for the fall.

Set in Chicago during WWII, When Franny Stands Up tells the story of Franny Steinberg, who is first introduced to the concept of the “Showstopper” one Christmas Eve when she sees the comedian Boopie Baxter perform at the Empire Room of the Palmer Hotel. From that moment forth, Franny’s dream is to become like her idol Boopie. At the Blue Moon Comedy Club, Franny learns the true power of the Showstopper, that moment when the audience laughs so hard that they are transformed. When Franny finds herself onstage in a torn bridesmaid dress, she realizes her Showstopper has the power to change everything. Not just for the audience, but for herself also.

When Franny Stands Up is funny, sweet, and certainly magical, but it also covers difficult topics— such as PTSD and sexual identity— with insight and heart. This book confronts the difficulties of life, but it also celebrates laughter and its power to heal and bring people together.

Not all of these are literature-based, but how could I let this Monday pass and not bring up all the Adam Levine DM memes? The Internet is a wonderful place. I don’t care what anyone says.

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

Checking in with Remy in the cat tree. He’s still loving it. We call this his side car, and it’s perfect because he’s got this dangly toy right in front of him. Whoever invented cat trees was really onto something.

Anyway, that’s it for Monday’s Book Radar! I hope you have a wonderful week. Don’t forget to go eat a golden bowl for me if you’re in Athens.

the crane husband book cover

The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill (Tordotcom, February 28, 2023)

Kelly Barnhill’s When Women Were Dragons was one of the most exciting new fantasy novels of 2022. So when I found out she has a novella coming out in 2023? And that it’s a retelling of the Japanese folktale “The Crane Wife?” Yeah, I got pretty excited to get my hands on this one. Also, just check out this incredibly stunning cover. I mean!

The Crane Husband is centered around the story of a small Mid-western family. The fifteen year-old daughter is responsible for raising her brother while her artist mother struggles to provide for her family through selling her beautiful tapestries. Over the past six years, while her mother has brought guests home, none of them have ever stayed. For the most part, it’s just been the three of them.

But then one day her mother brings home a strange guest, a six-foot tall crane that completely turns the family’s life upside down. The mother quickly falls prey to the crane’s every demand, abandoning the world around her to weave the masterpiece the crane has asked for. Now the teen girl knows she must do whatever it takes to protect her mother and save her family.

It’s scary season, and you know what that means. It’s time to prepare for some Halloween Read-A-Thons. My favorite time of year! I will be posting a longer list of Halloween Read-A-Thons next week. But for this week? I wanted to highlight the one I’m planning on participating in this year, and that’s gabbyread’s Weekendween: The Monster Mash. I chose this one because I love Gabby’s horror/thriller read-a-thons, and I love that this one is a manageable amount of tasks over the course of one weekend. Check out the prompts for yourself, and let me know if you’ll be participating too! Should I share what books I plan on reading for this?

What I’m Watching This Weekend

Anyone else a football fan here? Welp. I got NFL Sunday Ticket because I am playing in some fantasy leagues and I was hoping to keep up with all of the games. But. You know. Sunday Ticket hasn’t been working. At $80/month, I feel like I need my money back. Or is this just the price I pay for being a football fan?

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

As the weather starts getting cooler, the cats just start getting cuddlier. We love to see Murray and Remy getting along so famously. And yeah, I love my elephant quilt too.

That’s all for today, everyone. As I say pretty much every Thursday, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I hope you get to pet lots of cats and read lots of good books. I hope you sleep in at least one day this weekend, if not two. And yeah, I’ll see you same time same place on Monday, friends.

a sliver of darkness book cover

A Sliver of Darkness by C.J. Tudor (Ballantine, November 8)

I’m aware we’ve talked about a lot of novels lately, but how about short story collections? There are quite a few exciting short stories coming out here at the end of 2022, but C.J. Tudor’s A Sliver of Darkness is one of the more exciting ones. Whether you’re a fan of Tudor’s other novels, such as The Chalk Man or The Burning Girls, or whether this author is totally new to you, you’re going to want to prepare your shelves for this one.

This debut short story collection features 10 tales that are creepy, twisty, and mind-bending. For instance, there’s “The Lion at the Gate,” a story about a strange piece of graffiti that leads four school friends into a horrifying encounter. And as the world descends into darkness in “Final Course,” a group of old friends find time for one last dinner party. Then there’s “I’m Not Ted,” in which a case of mistaken identity turns deadly. Tudor has been hailed by the Daily Mail as “Britain’s female Stephen King.” So if you’ve been dying to find a collection of stories that will stick with you and chill you to the bone long after you’ve turned the last page, you’re going to want to grab this book when it comes out in November.
