LORD OF THE RINGS Amazon Series Reveals Full Title and Plot Details: Today in Books

Chloe Gong Announces New These Violent Delights Spin-Off Series

Chloe Gong, author of the bestselling These Violent Delights duology, has announced a new spin-off duology focusing on the “prickly-but-passionate” Rosalind Lang. The first novel in the series Foul Lady Fortune will be published by Margaret K. McElderry Books on September 27th. “Even before I finished writing my debut, the seeds of this spin-off were taking root,” Gong told PEOPLE in a statement. “Rosalind was a character who had such a compelling background, who made terrible mistakes that I wanted to explore, but she remained in the background because it wasn’t her story…Now she gets her time in the spotlight: to fall in love (and be loved back!), to fight for what she believes in, and I’m so proud of how she shines.”

Lord of the Rings Amazon Series Reveals Full Title and Plot Details

In a new video, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series has unveiled its full title in a new video. The 1-minute video shows molten metal filling grooves in wood while a voice says, “Three rings for the Elven kings under the sky. Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone. Nine for mortal men, doomed to die. One for the dark lord on his dark throne in the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.” Then, the full title of the show is revealed: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. “This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics,” said showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring –but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.” The epic fantasy series will debut on Amazon on September 2nd, 2022, with new episodes coming out weekly.

Prepare Your Shelves!

the paradox hotel book cover

The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart (Ballantine Books, February 22)

The Paradox Hotel is going to be a book that’s going to ring a lot of bells for a lot of people. Time travel. Locked room mystery. Ghosts. Truly this book has a little something for everyone, If you’re not normally a sci-fi reader, this novel is compelling enough on a mystery/thriller level. If you don’t normally pick up whodunits, the sci-fi/fantasy elements in this will grab you and keep you reading. Anyway, you get the idea!

The Paradox Hotel is not your average, run-of-the-mill hotel. This is the place where super wealthy people come to stay on their way towards the most exciting new kind of tourism: time travel. The Paradox Hotel is close to the time port where people can pay to take “flights” to different times in the past. Of course, being so close to a time port means sometimes strange things happen in the hotel. Clocks run backwards. Ghosts roam the halls.

But as a blizzard rolls in towards the hotel, everything is about to get stranger. The time port is having an odd reaction to the weather changes, and flights have been delayed until further notice. Now everyone is stuck at the hotel. And now… there is a murderer on the loose.

Or is there? For some reason, only January Cole, who runs security at the hotel, can see the dead body. And as guests at the hotel become targets, the killer seems to be invisible. It may all seem impossible, but anything is possible at the Paradox Hotel, where time is turned inside out and the past is waiting around every corner.

Monday Memes

True story. I bought Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi three times because I was so excited about reading it, and also I forgot that I’d already bought it. Three times. So this meme is for me and anyone else who can relate.

Other Things That Make Me Happy

You might be wondering why I’m reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf again. Or, I don’t know, maybe you don’t notice these things and that would be totally normal too. But I thought I should explain. Way back when that book first came out, I made my husband Ben buy it because I was 100% certain he would love it even though I hadn’t read it yet, just because I like Marlon James’ other work and I know how Ben feels about fantasy. He read it and loved it (hey, I’m good at recommending books). But that was a while ago!

Now with Moon Witch, Spider King coming out in a few months, it’s time for Ben to get a little refresher on the first book in the series. And I like it when people read to me. So we’re going to read the book together. He’s going to read it aloud and I’m going to relax and listen.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, my parents used to read to me every night before bed, and it was really nice! I don’t know why we as adults don’t do this for each other. I guess we have audiobooks, but there’s something really fun and communal about reading to each other every now and then. Sure, it’s probably going to take us a long time to get through the book this way, but we’ll get to savor it and spend some time together. Is this weird? I think it’s going to be fun. Anyway, maybe give it a try if it sounds appealing to you!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

cat on yoga mat

So you know how I said I’ve been doing yoga at home this month? Well, I haven’t been doing it alone. I usually have at least one cat friend join me. For this day of yoga, we’ve got Murray. What would we call this yoga pose he’s doing? Stripey orange kitty pose? Let me know if you have any ideas.

And that’s all I’ve got for you today! I hope your day is wonderful. Stay hydrated. Wear SPF. Remember to get up and move around a little bit, if you can!

Mia P. Manansala Announces 3 More Books in TITA ROSIE’S KITCHEN Mystery Series: Today in Books

Literati Acquires Follett Book Fairs

Subscription book box and online book club company Literati has acquired Follett Book Fairs. Follett first launched the book fairs for PreK-8 schools in 2017, but after the spread of Covid-19, several fairs were canceled. Last September, Follett announced that it would be closing down the fairs because it could not sustain the losses caused by the pandemic. Now, the fairs will now be rebranded Literati Book Fairs and will continue to service schools around the country. “The appeal for us was the high quality of the product,” said Jessica Ewing, founder and CEO of Literati. “Their product was really high quality and I liked that the focus of the fair was on books and not on non-book products or toys.” The fairs are already up and running in select schools in the Midwest, and schools in the Southeast can also book now for the 2022-2023 school year.

Grassroots Organizations Work to Get Books to Incarcerated People

Abolition Apostles, Noname’s Radical Hood Library, the Inside Books Project, Books Through Bars, and many other grassroots organizations across the country are working to get books to incarcerated people. Grassroots organizers say they hope to build relationships with incarcerated people through these book-giving programs. Daniel Schaffer, a collective member of NYC Books Through Bars, said, “It’s very much a mental health issue. Even just getting a piece of mail, a package, can be a highlight of your day, your week, your month.” The benefits of reading while incarcerated are well documented, but many of the new rules and censorship in prisons has made it more difficult for these organizations to get books to the people who need them. Visit these organizations’ websites to find out more about how you can help.

Can’t Wait for This One

circling back to you book cover

Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu (Avon, July 15th)

It’s been a while since I hyped up an upcoming romance novel, so it seemed like it was right about time. And now that it’s January and we’re all back to work—you know, circling back, touching base, and stuff—it seems like a good time to start looking ahead to an office romance coming out later this year.

Enter Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu. This book has one of my absolute favorite romance tropes: fake dating. Even though I have never, ever seen fake dating happen in real life and it’s totally bizarre, I absolutely eat it up in romance stories. Are you with me? Great. This is the story of Cadence Lim, who has worked her way up the corporate ladder at Prism Realty. Her best friend at work is Matt Escanilla, a top broker who is forever single. When a business trip lands both Matt and Cadence in their hometown, Matt asks Cadence for a little help. He needs her to pretend to be his girlfriend for a family gathering. Cadence agrees, and this trips forces the two to see each other in a different light, in more ways than one.

If Julie Tieu’s name seems familiar, that might be because everyone has been talking about her debut novel The Donut Trap that came out at the end of 2021. The Donut Trap was a romance novel that was delightfully cute, funny, and just a sweet (pun intended) read. Circling Back to You is a humorous romance in the same vein that I think people are going to love.

Words of Literary Wisdom

“You reach a point where you realize that your life must go on regardless. You choose to live or you choose to die. But then there are moments, things that you see, something funny on the street or or a good joke that you hear, a television program that you want to share, and it makes you miss the person who’s gone terribly and then it’s not grief at all, it’s more a sort of bitterness at the world for taking them away from you.”

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne

What’s Up in the Book Community?

My iPhone is constantly telling me I spend too much time staring at my screen, which is honestly so rude. But this means I spend a lot of time scrolling around the online book community: BookTube, Bookstagram, BookTok, BookLinkedIn (JK. That’s not a thing… I don’t think). You get the idea. Don’t have the time, energy, or the will to do all of that yourself? No problem. I got you. In this weekly section of Book Radar, we’ll take a look at something cool, interesting, and/or newsy that’s going on in the book community.

You know I like to keep y’all informed about upcoming Read-a-thons when I think they may be of interest to you. And here’s one that I’m personally planning on participating in for the month of February. It’s Blackathon, a month-long readathon hosted by multiple YouTubers that celebrates Black voices in literature.

cover image The Perfect Ruin

This year, Blackathon has four teams covering four different genres, with a different Youtuber leading each genre. Each team will have three reading prompts and a group read. Blackathon will also include Instagram challenges, Neflix parties, and more. You can get all of the details about Blackathon here.

I will be joining Team Thriller, hosted by Jesse over at Bowties and Books. You can watch their video about the challenge here. The group read for Team Thriller is going to be The Perfect Ruin by Shanora WIlliams. So feel free to read that along with me in the month of February, even if you choose not to participate in any other parts of the readathon. There are also teams for romance, literary fiction, and sci-fi/fantasy if those are more your speed. And if you do end up participating, I’d love to hear about what you’re reading!

Your Weekend Reading Soundtrack

This weekend, why not watch Station Eleven with me instead of listening to music? TV can be enriching too!

And Here’s A Cat Picture!

black cat with long arm

I love Phantom’s beautifully outstretched arm here. When he does this, I just want to take his paw in my hand and say, “Nice to meet you, sir!”

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for you this week! Have a great one! Don’t wait until the weekend to get enough hours of sleep! Oh, and tell your friends how much they mean to you!

On this day, museums, public libraries and educational/cultural institutions will host activities aimed at encouraging reading. The date of February 15th was chosen because of its proximity to the birthdays of prominent literary figures. The 32-page book is illustrated by Cbabi Bayoc and aims to give “children the language to dream of a better world,” according to a statement. Kendi said, “What I love the most about children is their prodigious capacity to dream and imagine the world anew. Goodnight Racism is not about what is; it is about what can be. It is about the good morning of an equitable and just world after wishing racism goodnight. I had the opportunity to work with the very best on this book: Namrata Tripathi and the team at Kokila. We wanted the book to read and feel and look like a timeless classic. And it does because of Chabi Bayoc’s illustrations. Simply epic.” The book will be available on June 14th.

The Mystery Behind Who Betrayed Anne Frank May Be Solved: Today in Books

Each World in Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse Will Have Its Own Art Style

The groundbreaking animation of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse had people talking, and it looks like 2022’s Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse will keep up the ambitious visual style. In a recent interview with Collider, filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller teased that the new film—the first half of the two-part sequel—will feature different art styles for each world main character Miles Morales visits. Miller, who co-wrote the script and is producing the film, said, “The idea that we’d be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style, and to be able to push the folks at ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand.” The film is slated to hit theaters on October 7th, 2022.

Mystery Over Who Gave Away Anne Frank’s Hiding Place May Be Solved

A cold case team led by former FBI agent Vince Pankoke has named Jewish notary Arnold van den Bergh as the prime suspect for the betrayal of Anne Frank and her family to the Nazis. The charge is based on six years of research and an anonymous letter sent to Anne’s father Otto Frank. Rosemary Sullivan’s new book The Betrayal of Anne Frank, along with an accompanying CBS documentary, outlines the research Pankoke and his team gathered to reach this conclusion. It is speculated that Van den Bergh might have divulged hiding places as a form of life insurance for his own family. Neither he nor his daughter were deported to the Nazi camps.

Shakespeare First Folio Acquired by the University of British Columbia

The UBC Library was able to purchase the volume, formerly owned by a private collector in the United States, through Christie’s in New York. “The First Folio is a cornerstone of English literature and with this donation, we are able to bring this cultural treasure into public ownership,” Katherine Kalsbeek, head of rare books and special collections at UBC Library, said in a statement.

Are Automatic 24 Hour Book Dispensers the Next Big Thing for 2022?

Book dispensers have taken Poland by storm and are set to become one of the big trends of 2022. The 24 hour book dispensers first appeared in Łódź’s Manufaktura complex in the summer of 2020. Since then, the idea has taken off and the dispensers can be found in cities across the country. The concept was born from an initiative by the City Library. Paweł Braun, the director of the City Library in Łódź, stated that the first dispenser, called Szuflandia, was created in response to the first lockdown: “We wanted to reach an even wider audience than before, and realized that Szuflandia would not limit readers by either its opening times nor the restrictions that had arisen because of the pandemic.” Jarosław Zalesiński, director of the Provincial and Municipal Public Library in Gdańsk, said the dispensers “are a new form of reaching readers and are a modern way to promote reading.”
